Education Week

Today we had a huge day as part of Education Week.

Our day started with our Walk to School Morning and Healthy Breakfast. We had a large number of students join the many teachers who ‘drove’ their bus from various parts of Korumburra to arrive at the K.P.S. Breakfast Bus Terminus. There was cereal, yoghurt, juice and lots of fruit to charge the children’s batteries, ready for the day ahead. Thank you to Mr Craig Friebe for co-ordinating this exciting start to our school day and

all the other staff who assisted in any way.

National Simultaneous Story-time

Next Wednesday, our school will take part in National Simultaneous Story-time where one story is read at the same time all around Australia. This year, the story is titled ‘I Got This Hat’ and will be read by our guest story-teller, Mrs Jacqui Rotthier. We look forward to seeing lots of students in the Library at Lunchtime to hear this

year’s story. Thank you to Mrs Helen Cripps for co-ordinating this.

OHS Audit

On Tuesday, our school is being visited by an auditor whose job is to ensure that our school is operating correctly under existing Occupational Health and Safety guidelines. We are fortunate to have 2 staff in Mrs Jenny Cant and Mrs Sharon Jones who lead us through OHS rules and regulations and ensure our school remains

a safe workplace for everyone.

Computer Literacy Program

Don’t forget that we have had information that our local Community House ‘Milpara’ is going to start a Computer Literacy program for those adults who would like to become more ‘computer literate’. This program would be a great support for those adults who either struggle with navigating their way around a computer or have dificulty in accessing / using such programs as our school Compass program. Please contact Milpara on 5655 2524 or e-mail them at

[email protected].

Spot Mr Gray’s Spelling Mistake

Sophie McKenzie spotted my ‘error’ in the word ‘protocol’ which I mis-spelt as ‘protacol’ in my last newsletter report. Congratulations again Sophie! As usual, there will be a prize for all those students who can identify the deliberate error in this report! Good luck

spotting my very easy mistake in this report.

David Gray

Assistant Principal

Next, we had our special ‘What Education Means to Me’ Assembly where 6 of our Year 6 students shared their views on the importance of education to them. Congratulations to Shu Misawa, Baylee Norrey, Izaak Morrison, Isabella Tomkinson, Beau Wilson and Willow Aarts-Reaper who all spoke confidently and presented well considered and thought-out points of view. The students’ presentations are included in this newsletter for your information.

Please take the time to read their speeches.

After Assembly, it was time to throw open the classroom doors to our parents, grandparents and other community members to see

how our classes operate.

This afternoon, our Senior students continued their Winter Sport program and competed against Foster & Welshpool Primary Schools in a variety of sports. The children’s sportsmanship has been outstanding in the previous weeks of competition and along with some great results means that they will no doubt have another

great day of sport today.

House Cross Country Run

Next Wednesday 25th May, we have our annual House Cross Country run which will see all our students compete in various age groups as they make their way around the tricky course that Mrs Snooks has prepared. This year, we have a new addition with the creation of a footpath that runs down beside our school boundary fence on Princes Street. This will only add to the many other different surfaces that the students will run on. It really will be across country! Good luck to all our students as it is another way that our

students can show their support for their House team-mates.

Maths Olympiad

This week, many of our Year 5 & 6 students have taken part in the annual Maths Olympiad. Mr Nigel Kilpatrick has co-ordinated this event which sees the students taking part in a range of Maths activities, testing themselves to solve the many challenging questions. We look forward to hearing of the children’s results later

in the year. Thank you to Mr K for co-ordinating this event.

Year 5s Learn About Milk

Yesterday afternoon, Dr Mat Holmes spoke with our Year 5 students about milk and its importance as part of keeping their bodies healthy. This came about through the effort of our Art eacher, Ms Rachel Warren who arranged this as part of the Dairy Cow Competition that our school is participating in. Mat answered the students’ questions about milk, diet, health and nutrition and was a great source of knowledge on the topic. Thank you to Ms Warren for arranging for Mat to talk to the students. It is always great to have Mat back at KPS where he was a student. His nieces

Rani and Regan still attend KPS.

Caleb, Dia and Charlie creating adventures for

the pirates in Pirate Land

Our Prep children have been busy learning many things, especially in Maths and have used their morning Investigations time to practise their developing skills. They have been learning to read, write and make numbers, extend the number they can count to and how to describe where things are located. We read a story about a caterpillar’s journey, ‘The Longest Journey in the World’ and then both recreated the story and created our own journeys. We also have Pirate Land, where the children can describe the location of the pirates and create maps to show the location of the treasure!

Year 5

We would like to say a BIG congratulations to all the Year 3’s and Year 5’s for their fantastic efforts with NAPLAN this year . It was great to hear so much positive feedback from the kids in regards to NAPLAN and when we discussed the writing piece after the test, the kids said ‘it was just like a Big Write’! We look forward to getting the results next semester and I know the teachers can’t wait to get back to their regular

routines now that NAPLAN has been completed.

With that in mind, can parents please make sure they’re checking and signing their child’s Reading Diary on a weekly basis, encouraging them to read for at least 4 nights a week. Please also make sure that your child is completing their Maths Homework on a weekly basis too, which students can either print out at school or access through OneNote on their netbook computers. Thanks for your support and please find either

Mr Wells or Mrs McCahon if you have any queries in regards to homework expectations in Year 5.

Year 6

It’s been a very busy few weeks in the Year 6 area! The students have been working diligently on their two persuasive pieces; one a letter to

Mr. Pirouet about an idea that will help the school become more sustainable, and the second is about what does education means to them.

We are happy to announce that Baylee Norrey, Shu Misawa, Isabella Tomkinson, Beau Wilson, Willow Aarts-Reaper and Izaak Morrison have been selected by their peers to read their What Does Education Mean To Me speeches out at assembly this Friday the 20 th of May. We are

so impressed with the standard of the students’ work and want to thank them all for the effort each of them put into these speeches!

Just a friendly reminder that if you have not returned your child’s Secondary School Placement Form that needs to be returned to the office as soon as possible so we can start our transition process. We are looking forward to seeing as many parents as we can on Friday the 20th of

May for our open classrooms!

Parents and Friends News

Hi everyone ! We all hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day and enjoyed your specially selected gifts your children bought for you.

Last Monday in our meeting our big topic for discussion was getting ready for a Trivia Night in Term 3. There was plenty of talk about our last Trivia Night which was a huge success. Hopefully this year’s one will be injury free. Stay tuned for details.

We are also getting ready to do the ordering for the Father’s Day stall soon. There is always lots going on. Please feel free to come to our next meeting. It’s on the 20th of June in room 3 after Assembly. Sam Davies President Parents and Friends.

Music News

KPS students have once again demonstrated an avid thirst for learning during their Music classes. The photos below give you a taste of the

level of concentration and energy required to actively participate. The Prep classes are practising their best “How Much is That Doggie in the

Window” moves. How adorable are the Preps’ acting out the lyrics?

The Year 3’s have been learning to read both written notation of rhythms and letter names in order to play a variety of glockenspiel,

xylophone and marimba instruments. It is very exciting watching them develop their reading and playing skills.

The Year 4 classes have been continuing with their recorder practise (watch out senior students) this week, however, have also being

preparing themselves for a performance at Assembly. The 3 Year 4 classes are putting on a performance of both singing and dancing to

waken everyone up first thing this coming Monday the 23rd of May. They would love a big audience as they perform “We Got the Beat”. I

hope to see you there!

Library News

National Simultaneous Storytime – This will be celebrated next Wednesday 25th May at 2:00 pm in the Library. Students are invited to

come to the Library at Lunchtime to listen to the story ‘I Got This Hat’ read by storyteller extra-ordinaire Mrs Rotthier.

Activities relating to the story will be on offer at lunchtime.

Premier’s Reading Challenge – Congratulations this week go to Jorjah Davies for completing ‘The Challenge’. Well done Jorjah.

Just a reminder, if you want your name on the on-line honour roll a signed consent form must be returned to school.

Book Club – Brochures for the latest issue, no. 4 have been distributed to all classes. The closing date for orders is Friday 3rd June.

Helen Cripps

Library Technician

Home Reading

All students have a Home-Reading Diary which they are required to use on a regular basis. Each class has Library sessions once per week as

well as having access to classroom home borrowing books. Each student in Year 3 and 4 should be reading at least 4-5 times per week and

recording their home reading as part of developing good reading habits, independence and comprehension skills.

Lost Property

Now that the weather is changing to cooler and wetter on a regular basis, there is again lots of lost property, particularly jumpers, jackets, hats

and scarves etc. being left behind at the end of each day. Named items are quickly returned to their owners, however most items we find have

no names! Please ensure that students are responsible for their own belongings and they treat them with respect and care.

Year 4 Camp

Year 4 students have received their initial camp notices for their Term 3 Camp to Allambee. If parents require more information, please see

Craig Friebe, Ellyn Zizic or Jenny Mulqueeney.

Year 4 Earth Science Incursion

As part of their Earth Science topic, Year 4 students will be having an incursion with Peter Baird from Landcare on Friday 3 rd June to talk

about Basic Geology, Land Formation and Landforms as well as Local Land Use. This will assist students with seeing some of their theoretical

facts and figures in real-life situations.

Football Clinic

On Monday 6th June, Year 3 and 4 students will be treated to a Football Clinic conducted by Carlton Football Club in conjunction with AFL

Gippsland. The skills and activity sessions will take place on the Pony Paddock (or in the gym/quadrangle-weather permitting) from 1:00-2:15.

Big Write:

We are now into our 4th Big Write and settling into a classroom routine to prepare and enjoy our writing experiences. So far we have written

recounts, expositions and narratives. Together with our regular classroom instruction and experiences in Writing, there has been a noticeable

engagement and enjoyment in all classrooms around the Big Write days. Teachers are observing improved skills in students’ se lection of

Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation as a result of the continued classroom instruction focus. In particular, teachers and

students are commenting on the time that students can now stay focused and spend on their writing pieces.

The mantra ‘If I can talk about it, I can write about it’ is certainly staying true with thanks to all the parents that are spending time talking

about our Big Write topics at home. Students are coming to school on Big Write days with extra ideas and inspiration to add to the

conversations and ideas generated in the classrooms.

Our following Big Writes will be in reports, instructions, procedures and descriptive styles.

Jacqui Rotthier

Learning Coach, Literacy & Assessment Leader

Education may mean getting up early and going to this place where you sit at a desk for ages and do tests. You can also think about it this way a

place where you find friends and get ready for future life and learn new things.

Without education I wouldn’t be where I am right now, its normal if you aren’t good at every single subject. Honestly I am not good at many

subjects but I don’t give up on them. If I gave up on the subjects that I’m not very good then how would I be where I am now.

Being in school for most of the day may not be fun but primary school is one of the easiest things you will come across in li fe. Once you finish primary school

you have high school then a job and next you’re driving.

We are very lucky to have a school as great as ours; in some countries they don’t even have schools. Without school what would we know? I can tell you that

you wouldn’t know much, you would only know the basic things.

Yeah education does mean hard work and a lot of focus but in the end the stars come out and you shine.

By Baylee Norrey CA:6

“Aim high for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose ability to learn new things and move

forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfection.”

Why does education matter? Well, we are lucky we can have school to learn brand new things every day. People in other countries had school.

But now it’s gone because of war. They can’t learn anything presides what happens in war. So be thankful that you have school no matter how

much you hate it or love it.

Did you know school can help with self-confidence? It helped me otherwise I wouldn’t be up here telling you what education means to me. The more projects

or acts that you present it will build self-confidence.

It gives us more opportunities to do amazing things. Like to learn how to read, write, to do maths. Even to present a project. You can easily surprise yourself.

Like how fast you can answer 9x7. I’ve surprised myself! I thought I wasn’t a good speller, it turns out I am! This is all that I can tell you what education

means to me.

Written by Isabella Tomkinson CA6

“今日を生き、昨日のことを克服しなさい” (live today, get over yesterday.)

If you make a mistake, you will not make it today. Even if you really hate education you won’t make the mistake that you made at school or home.

You will just practise, that will make you achieve your goal.

Education means that it shows you what you are Overwhelming good at and what you could learn about from school. School isn’t meant to make

you study for hours and hours. The school is trying their best to each you lots of items.

Also, you might make the world a better place to live. Like if you study about nature, animals and forests, it might be a better forest. And same as cities,

towns, farms and so on.

In addition, if you know how to be a tremendous leader or a role model, everyone would copy you in the town. Even if you don’t believe that you are going to

(Continued on page 11)

be the leader, you still at least doing the right thing. That will make you feel safe so no one will be desperate to do bad stuff.

“今日を生き、昨日のことを克服しなさい” (live today, get over yesterday.) (Even you know the meaning).

You should get over yesterday and live today. But, don’t forget what you learnt about. And you could learn from what mistakes you’ve made. Remember

about the bad things; get ready to learn new bits and pieces too!

Written by Shu Misawa CA6

“do what is right not what is wrong”

My quote is about do what is right not what is wrong. Make the right decisions in life or your life won’t be as you planned but in all parts of life.

Everyone needs education because the world is based on education. To work you need maths, reading, writing and more. If you want a good

job you need lots of education.

Education is good for sport because you need to know how many goals and behinds your team has scored. But education is more than just

keeping score, it teaches you good sports men ship and make you a nice person

Making friends everyone makes mistakes but don’t give up and keep trying until you archive.

By Beau Wilson NB6

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

– Walt Disney

If you have a goal and want to succeed what do you think is going to happen when you sit and do nothing. Try to put an effort in, have a go. Any-

one can reach any goal, any belief, to succeed you must try, and no matter how hard it is for you, or even me, try as hard as you can, better than

you ever have. Even if you’re not the best, you can still get better. You’ll succeed one day, no matter how long it takes you’ll get there. You’ll have a bigger

dream, then you’ll have built up all that courage and you’ll try harder. So keep, as hard as you can. Its worth in the once you get there.

My school education is very important to me. I may not be the best at my school work, but I try my hardest. Your education is very important, it helps you

through life. If you don’t have an education in the ‘real world’ what are you going to do, nothing! Education is not necessarily meaning work, but you need

education in a lot of things, basically everything! It helps you with getting a job, for example, no matter how less of an education you have, you can still get a

job, it may not be the most luxurious, but if you have an education you can get better jobs!

School education is very important, especially for me. I want to have a good job in the future, I want to have a good and earning life, and obviously a good

job. So I try to learn as much as I can, even if I hate it! I always try to put an effort in its all worthwhile. It’s also good to try something new in every subject of

school, you don’t know how something is until you try. Not necessarily in school either.

By Willow Aarts NB6

Quote: He, who open’s a school door, close’s a prison door.

I believe that this quote suits me. It means that education and school gives you more opportunities in life and helps you later in life.

People always teach you something not just your teacher but everyone that has taught you something or helped you, in your life. If you don’t like school well

to bad, if you want to have a better job you need more opportunities.

The one person that expects to learn will help you but you need to help yourself to open the door to expect. I strongly believe that I need education. I learn

every day without even knowing, I’m not just talking about my teachers [even know that they help me a lot] like I said before everyone teaches you

something. I’m lucky that I have good teachers and a good education.

This quote caught my eye when I was searching for a quote that represents me. The reason why I picked it is because it points out that people that teach

you are the most important people in your life.

If you choose to open the door to exception to learn, is to open better door in the future.

Yours sincerely Izaak Morrison NB6 Thank you
