BANDITS SPORT DESK

November sees the Bandits preparing for basketball and curling. Sr and Jr. basketball teams are completing the selection process this week and competition for spots is tough. Best of luck earning a spot and representing our school in Edmonton Metro. Upcoming tournaments for the Bandits are at St Francis Xavier, Rocky Mountain House, Camrose, and Holy Trinity in Edmonton. Mixed curlers are battling Tuesdays at 4pm at the Ottewell Club until Dec 17. They have been practicing since October and are ready to go! Congrats to the Sr Boys Volleyball squad who lost in the Div 4 Final to St. Joe’s. The boys had a great playoff run after finishing 7th in league play. Thanks to all volleyball coaches, girls and boys, for their valued contribution to the volleyball program and our students.

GRAD 2020

We are aware that extended holidays

and extra-curricular related travel

commitments occur during the regular

school year. However, missing

numerous consecutive classes during the

school term can result in a student

falling behind in their course work.

Therefore, we ask that any students who

will be absent for 3 or more consecutive

days complete a ESBCHS Extended Leave

Form. The forms are available in the

office and are to be completed and

returned prior to the student being

away.

EUROPE 2021

2019 BEAUMONT NISKU CHRISTMAS ELVES COLLECTION

Christmas is just around the corner, and the

Student Activists for Peace and Preservation

(SAPP) group is excited about this year’s

Beaumont Nisku Christmas Elves Collection.

Since the majority of donations made to the

Christmas Elves are for younger children,

SAPP’s goal is to fill 35 – 40 gift bags for local

teens in need.

Please consider donating any of the following

new items: pajamas in all adult sizes,

toques, mitts, socks, slippers, cozy blankets,

toiletry packs, cosmetics, adjustable belts,

adjustable ball caps, Oilers jerseys, hoodies,

craft kits, shaving kits, blow driers, straight

irons, curling irons, gift cards, etc.

We will also accept non-perishable food

items or gift cards for local grocery stores.

This year, the Christmas Elves are trying to

include a basket of baking supplies for

families who have indicated that they enjoy

baking – so please consider donating non-

perishable baking items such as: chocolate

chips, raisins, baking powder, baking soda,

vanilla, flour, cinnamon, molasses, ginger, etc.

If you enjoy Christmas baking, pull out your

favorite recipes and include them too.

If you know of a family in need, you can submit a referral through the Christmas Elves Website - https://www.bnchristmaselves.com/ . All submissions are confidential and are processed by the Family and Community Social Services (FCSS) here in Beaumont. Our Christmas Elves Collection will continue

until Tuesday, December 10th.

Parents also have the option to contribute

monetarily through their PowerSchool Parent

Portal. You can find the “Christmas Elves”

icon in Student Fees and Forms. Thank you in

advance for your support and generosity!

STUDY SKILLS

Studying effectively takes motivation, organization, time and practice. Follow these tips to improve your study habits:

Set your goals. Although graduation is your ultimate goal, setting more immediate goals will help you stay focused and motivated. Realistic long-term goals, such as being prepared for midterms or reaching a specific grade point average, will help you organize your efforts for each semester. Short-term goals such as completing research on an assignment or reading two chapters by the weekend, will help you stay on track on a day-to day basis.

Make sure your goals are realistic. Aim for steady improvement in your marks - you will achieve your goals and be motivated to keep trying.

Set up a schedule. A schedule helps you get organized and make decisions about how much time to spend on what, so you can manage the demands on your time, meet your deadlines and still maintain some balance in your life.

Keep your schedule flexible. Review your schedule regularly - unexpected events and assignments will require you to make changes.

Study every day. Shorter, regular study periods are more effective than marathon sessions. Frequent breaks will help you study more effectively.

Avoid procrastinating. Identify the ways you typically waste time or put off until later the things you should be doing now - both are examples of procrastination.

Make it easy to start studying and stay focused. Study in a quiet place with a desk or table, a comfortable chair and good lighting. Organize any tools you will need and keep them handy. Remove phone and access to social media to avoid temptation.

Compete with yourself. Challenge yourself to increase the length of time you can concentrate, improve your mark on the next exam or accomplish more in a set amount of time.

Think and say positive things about studying. Approach studying the same way you would approach any other type of work - take a positive attitude and tackle it head on.

Look at yourself. Maintain your energy and boost your brainpower - get enough sleep, eat nutritious food and exercise regularly.

Reward yourself. Recognizing your success is an important way to maintain your motivation. When you achieve a goal, large or small, celebrate.

PARENT’S ROLE IN EDUCATION

Parents are partners in education. They are the primary guides and decision-makers for their children. As a parent, you understand how your child learns. You know your child’s strengths as well as the areas where your child needs help. Your involvement in your child’s education is important for his or her success in school. Our school has a Student Handbook that can provide valuable information to help your child succeed.

The Student Handbook is available on our school website. (ESBCHS)

The Handbook contains:

expectations for student behavior

attendance policy

course descriptions

opportunities for parental involvement.

opportunities for student involvement.

It is also always a good idea to get familiar with your student’s school:

Get to know your child’s teachers, the school principal, and office staff.

Attend parent-teacher meetings.

Attend school events, information sessions, and concerts.

Join the school council. The council is a group for parents that advises the school on important issues.

Explore the school’s website.

Explore tutor possibilities, when needed, to support academic success.

Thank you for your input as we work towards success for all our students.
