Creditsafe chief executive officerCato Syversen has replied to aletter from the BPIF in which theyvoiced concerns at the impact onmany UK printing companies ofthe recent upgrade made to thecompany’s credit ratings model.

The letter pointed out thismove had resulted in manyprinting companies sufferingsignificant downgrades to theircredit ratings – with some goingfrom ‘very low risk’ to ‘veryhigh risk’. Creditsafe was askedto explain why this widespreadshift in companies’ assessmentshas occurred, seeking morebackground on how the newmodel operates in practice andwhy the company considers thistool to be more accurate than itspredecessor.

BPIF also asked for details onhow Creditsafe’s model factors inpayment cycles agreed withcustomers, and whether it mightbe possible to improve thetransparency of the credit reports,so that the cause of a drop inrating might be made clear to thecompanies affected.

In his reply, Mr Syversen isadamant that there has been no‘blanket’ downgrade of ratingsfor firms operating in this sector

and there has been no ‘blanket’application of 30 day paymentterms in the system. He states thatevery invoice is tracked againstthe creditors’ agreed paymentterms, be they 30, 60, 90 days, orany other period. Trade dataexperiences are sourced fromsuppliers’ ledger systems andfeed into the system directly froma client’s accounting software.The data is processed utilisingcomparable security links to thoseemployed by the bankingindustry, with paymentexperience data integrated only asa variable into the ratingsalgorithm when multiple paymentexperiences are available.

My Syversen adds that therehas been no specific upgrading, ordowngrading, of company ratingsor limits assigned on the basis offirms being coded as companiesin the print industry, stating that“Across all industries, thesechanges have seen Creditsaferecommend increases in totalaggregate trade limits across allcategories of company, fromsmall to medium sized enterprises(SMEs) through to major multi-national corporations.”

general news & productsD&K launches new laminatorThe latest laminator in the Jupiter range is the Jupiter 35L, a 35m/minuteB2 laminator capable of delivering over 4,100 B2 sheets per hour.

The original Jupiter model was launched in 2006 and at that time it wascapable of running at up to 20m/minute, which equates to around 1,700B2 sheets per hour. Over the intervening years, the portrait fed Jupiter hasundergone a number of changes, taking it to 35m/minute and adding adouble-sided Jupiter DS model to the range.

Today, the PLC controlled, landscape Jupiter 35L will run a B2 sheeteither landscape or portrait and boasts a cantilevered air shaft mandrel forfaster film roll changes, pallet feeding and a delivery jogger, all supplied asstandard. An optional delivery stacker is also available in place of thestandard Jogger for pallet to pallet operation of longer runs.

With less printed material being produced at B1 and far more beingproduced digitally at SRA3, the Jupiter 35L is a good choice for bothprinters and finishers alike; it maintains its ease of handling digitallyprinted material yet feeding a B2 sheet landscape (as printed) it can avoidthe issues sometimes associated with laminating a press-sealed sheet. ■

Tabletop binder

Glue application consistently monitoredMuller Martini’s newly developed Adhesive Monitoring System (AMS)gives customers benefits in terms of product quality and cost control.With AMS, a laser consistently monitors glue application during theproduction of softcover books. Glue application is measured reliably evenfor differing glue patterns, thanks to the seamless integration of theadhesive monitoring system with the control system of the latestgeneration perfect binders. “The system measures extremely accuratelyand it’s capabilities are really impressive,” says Michael Scherrer,production manager at the Scherrer bookbindery in Zurich. ■

First AcademyThe start of the new academicyear saw an important first for theCommunications and Contentindustries with the opening of theStationers’ Crown WoodsAcademy in Greenwich.

This new Academy will be thefirst in the UK to specialise indigital media, preparinggenerations of young people forthe digital age and encouragingsome of them to consider careersin these industries. It will besponsored by the Stationers’Company.

In September 2014 CrownWoods College in Greenwichconverted to academy status, withthe new name of Stationers’Crown Woods Academy, and joinLeigh Academies Trust alongwith its seven other academies, alllocated in South East London. ■

Panasonic has introduced a seriesof multi-functional printers whichfeature mobile connectivity andhelp save paper. The ‘QuickDuplex’ system allows automaticprinting on both sides. Needingless paper to be stored inside theprinter means the KX-MB2100 isable to fit in to smaller workstations. Up to three frequentlyused functions or complicatedcopy/scan settings can beprogrammed to the ‘quick job’keys. This speeds up the processand aids mistake free operation by

giving the ability to quickly recalland execute programmes.

The ‘Secure Print’ functionprevents confidential documentsfrom being accessed. ■

environmental news and productsSustainability credentialsThe European corrugated sector is under ever-increasing pressure toprove its sustainability credentials and meet regulatory requirements onreducing waste. Hot on the heels of its commitment to the CircularEconomy package published by the European Commission, globalcorrugated company SUN Automation Group® has outlined the measuresthey are taking to help customers improve their eco-credentials.

SUN Automation’s general manager EMEA, Rob Dal Lago explained:“The corrugated sector already has an excellent environmental record. Inthe UK alone, corrugated boxes contain on average 76% recycled fibre,and after use up to 80% of corrugated packaging is collected for recycling.However, many European plants still have outstanding issues to addressin the printing process; not least waste-related issues with ink use, wash-up water, and scrap material.”

SUN Automation is using its experience in technical innovation to helpEuropean corrugated box plants implement new efficiencies in theirprocesses without the need for massive investment. For example, thecompany’s Extend-O-Feed® Lead Edge Feeder, feeds over nearly thewhole width of the board, will tolerate lower quality substrates, andrequires minimal maintenance – all of which helps to reduce scrap andproduction downtime while increasing sheet speed and accuracy. ■

Environmental standards chasedEnvironmental standard ISO 14001, once a ‘vanity project’ for just a fewprint companies, is now becoming an accepted business necessity in theindustry, say print waste managers J&G Environmental.

The company handles waste management for over 2000 printers andpublishing houses, and J&G general manager John Haines says,“Customers now ring every day of the week for this information and weestimate that the number of companies we deal with seeking ISO 14001has risen by around 50 per cent in the last two years.”

Gaining the standard helps companies demonstrate to customers howtheir operations minimise environmental impact and comply withregulations. Sustainable waste management is a key element of thestandard's requirements, with companies having to show they have legalsystems in place recording how much waste is collected, who is handlingit, its final destination, and how much of it is recycled.

“The demands of a growing number of potential customers with formalgreen supply chains in place means that having ISO 14001 has become abusiness necessity,” said Haines

“It often makes the difference between getting on to a tender list andnot. Lots of new business can now stand or fall on a company’senvironmental policy and whether or not it is formally recognised by anoutside accreditation body. The fact that so many of our own customersnow aspire to the standard shows that message is getting through.” ■
