Printing specialist Lijnco, basedin Groningen, the Netherlands -one of Q.I. Press Controls

oldest customers - is to invest inmRC-3D. In so doing, Lijnco isplacing its seventh order and provesonce again its value as a loyal andsatisfied customer.

As a communications provider,Lijnco uses a diversity of communi-cation channels. For physical formsof communication, Lijnco produceshigh-quality printed matter for anextensive array of clients. Addition-ally, the company also producesstickers, labels, security documents, logistics documents, tickets and allsorts of other printed matter gearedto the needs of its customers.According to Anne Werkman, project manager at Lijnco, in order tomaintain levels of profitability inprinted matter in the future, it’sessential to invest in processcontrol: “Effective register controlhelps reduce set-up times and useof set-up material. What’s more, thequality of the register is much better. These are aspects, which - from a

financial and environmental point ofview - are major improvements. Ourprevious experience with Q.I. PressControls and the price-quality ratioof their solutions means that wehave once again opted to acquire aQ.I. Press Controls system.”

The mRC-3D will replace the existingIRS which has had a proven trackrecord over the last 16 years. Theupgrade consists of an automaticcolour register, including front toback and perforation register. Thecameras are positioned on a MüllerMartini narrow-web offset-rotationpress consisting of nine printingunits.

With the upgrade to the mRC-3D,Lijnco expects that the quality of itsproducts will continue to meetstandards of high quality. In fact, with the addition of the automaticperforation register, it will more thanexceed them. “It’s a win-winsituation,” explains Werkman. “Weexpect improved performance interms of efficiency and reducedconsumption of materials. Another

side-effect of having a reliablesystem in place will be the increasedconfidence in the printing presseson the part of operators.”

With this order, Menno Jansen, managing director of Q.I. PressControls, aims to show that Q.I.Press Controls’ solutions are suitablefor any kind of printing press. “In thepast we may have had a name in thecoldset and heatset business, butwith clients such as Lijnco we areable to show that our systems canalso be used on narrow-webpresses. The fact that Lijnco hasonce again plumped for oursolution is a reflection of this evidentsatisfaction.” With the mRC-3D,Lijnco will remain one of the leadingplayers on the market. “When itcomes to giving support to modernprinting companies such as Lijnco,”Werkman adds, “the people at Q.I.Press Controls know what it’s allabout. Offset will remain part of ourwork where we can be of assis-tance to clients. The effectivesolutions and service that Q.I. PressControls offer, helps us retain a

Worldwide market outlook for boththe packaging and printing industriesis set to shine too. According to theFuture of Global Printing to 2018report, global printing industry isexpected to reach $980 billion by2018, with growth driven mainly bypackaging and labels.

Another trend observed is the shiftin print technology used – in 2008,digital printing accounted for just18.5% of the offset market in valueterms, but by 2018, it is forecastedthat digital printing will make upalmost 50% of the global offsetsector.

The global packaging market on theother hand is projected to welcomebullish sales receipts of $975 billionby 2018, with sales of packaginglargely concentrated in Asia. By2018, segmentation of the market isexpected to change and Asia ispredicted to represent over 40% ofglobal demand for packaging. In line with these projections, MrChaivudhi Pungthong, President ofThe Thai Packaging Association, shared that “exports of packagingmaterials – primarily film, plastic andprinted materials – could hit 100billion baht with the implementationof the Asean Economic Community(AEC) this year.”

He went on to comment that,“despite political challenges, thepackaging industry will continue togrow because the industry is tied tothe production of consumer goodswhich have increased substantially

Nussbaum, one of theleaders in the Europeanmonobloc packaging

industry, has become the firstcompany to install Polare, SunChemical’s new dispensing solution.Launched earlier this year at Metpack2014, it is a compact systemdesigned to meet the requirementfor this particularly demandingmarket.

Originally founded as an aluminiumcan manufacturer in 1963, over thepast 50 years Nussbaum hasevolved into an independent Swissgroup of companies specialising inhigh quality metal packaging for theglobal market.

With over 400 employees and fourmanufacturing sites located acrossSwitzerland and Germany, thecompany focuses on the develop-ment, production and distribution ofcans and tubes in a large variety ofdifferent shapes and sizes, featuringthe finest lithography. Furtherestablishing Nussbaum’s position asa pioneering business is itsdedication to advances in aluminiumpackaging, as well as its commit-ment to sustainability.

Striving for innovation, Nussbaum isconstantly improving processes andintroducing new technologies to itsproduction environment. One areain which the can and tube manufac-turer has recently invested particularattention is the optimisation for thepreparation of spot inks forproduction.

“Aside from shape and size, the inksare the most visible component of a

can. This means that, in order toobtain that visually striking balance tocapture the customer’s attention, the ink layer, colour shade andsharpness of print need to beperfect,” explains Florian Nussbaum,CEO.

Gordon Huettig, CTO at Nussbaum, continues: “With that in mind, weaim to perfect Nussbaum’s offeringby investing in a range of equipmentthat will further enhance all inkrelated items, as well as reduce ourinternal costs and shorten pressdown-times.”

“Sun Chemical has been our inksupplier over the course of twodecades,” explains Gordon. “Ourcompanies have a long-standingand fruitful relationship and we havedeveloped many innovativeproducts together. As a result, wewere happy to enlist their servicesagain and invest in their newdispensing solution.”

For Nussbaum, Polare represents thenext step in making processes saferand more efficient than ever. Basedon proven technology, thedispensing system is designed tomeet exacting print requirementswhile streamlining the production ofspot inks. With no stock wasted andthanks to Polare’s excellent ability torepeat processes, ink can beremixed identically in a matter ofminutes.

In 2011 Nussbaum installed SunChemical’s Turnkey Solution, a webbased colour management systemas well as its colour QC software;the installation of Polare is the next

step to optimise its production ofmetal decoration

Gordon has already noticed theadvantages of incorporating thecompact system into Nussbaum’sproduction environment. “Amachine this precise operating 24/7is instrumental in the prevention oferrors, but what I find most helpful isits ability to track batch numbers, which allows our production runs tobe traced back to componentsfrom each job.”

Finally, with its employment of SunChemical technologies and itscommitment to producing highquality metal packaging solutions,Nussbaum is one step closer tocompleting its Colour CompetenceCenterTM (CCC). A third generationink kitchen tailor-made by SunChemical, the CCC functions as aninfrastructure that allows efficientoperations, helps reduce internalcosts and shortens press down-times. “The CCC is part of a bigger

However, the beginning was anything but easy for us. The takeoverof Planeta by Koenig & Bauer in 1991 scared away numerous longstandingPlaneta users. Many turned their backs on what then became KBA-Planeta.When KBA-France was founded in 1994 only six Rapidas from Koenig &Bauer had been installed in France ? two Rapida 104 and four Rapida 72K.What is KBA-France’s market position like today?

Michel Faust: At the end of 2014 our active press fleet consisted of approx.

200 Rapidas, 50 per cent of whichare implemented in commercialprinting companies and 50 per centin packaging printing. Half of all thepresses we have sold since 1994were to new customers. We areparticularly proud that over 90 percent of our existing customersremain loyal to KBA. In today’sworld this is not simply a matter ofcourse. As the number of installedpresses grew so did our internalorganisation: we opened a secondoffice in Lyon in 2004 and thenumber of employees has risenfrom eight in September 1994 to 35today. Compared to previous yearsKoenig & Bauer’s(KBA)management board was not

able to report an influx of orders inthe international newspaper industryduring its press conference at thisyear’s World Publishing Expo inAmsterdam.

Since 2011 the international slump ininvestment in web offset presses fornewspapers and publications hasintensified following a minor interimhigh in 2010, and in 2014 the globalvolume of new web press orderswill reach a new low of below•300m. Possible relevant businessmodels with high-volume digitalpresses, such as the KBA RotaJET,have been a subject of lively debatein the industry and also testedoccasionally, but newspaperpublishers have remained extremelyhesitant to make the necessaryinvestments. Pioneers are needed, like so often in the long history ofthe newspaper industry. ChristophMüller, KBA executive vice-presidentfor the web press division, hit thenail on the head: “Traditionalnewspaper houses currentlyconnect digital first with online ormobile activities.”

Like other established vendors in thenewspaper industry for some yearsKBA has been forced to adapt itscapacities and personnel for thismarket segment at great expense tothe sharp slump in demand. This inaddition to restructuring thecompany. Christoph Müller: “Thepreviously large web offset marketsegment has mutated into a nichemarket in terms of volume. Thismakes it difficult for suppliers tomaintain customary R&D standardsand offer free consultation which iswhy we have initiated additionalactivities, such as the partnershipwith HP in the digital corrugated

packaging printing segment We aredoing our best and have streamlinedourselves as a product house.”

FIT@ALL FOR THE SHIFTFIT@ALL FOR THE SHIFTFIT@ALL FOR THE SHIFTFIT@ALL FOR THE SHIFTFIT@ALL FOR THE SHIFT

KBA CEO and president ClausBolza-Schünemann reported on theongoing restructuring of the KBAGroup under the motto “Fit@All”which has been in place since thebeginning of the year. In recentmonths agreements for thereduction of over 1,000 from a totalof up to 1,500 jobs were made withemployee representatives at Germanand Austrian production sites. Morethan half will be cut at the web pressfacilities in Würzburg, Trennfeld undFrankenthal. A new site concept forproduction should prevent parallelactivities and is currently leading tomajor relocation activities betweenthe individual production sites. Inaddition he named the establish-

ment of autonomous business units(also called product houses at KBA)which have clear responsibility forsales and earnings for the webpress, sheetfed press, special press(this includes bank note and digitalprinting) segments and productionas a very important measure. Bolza-Schünemann: “We have tosustainably strengthen our profitabil-ity and competitiveness in all areas. In order to do this we need moretransparency and more strategicflexibility.

A holding company with a fewcentral functions, a small manage-ment board and operative unitsassigned to it with own managingdirectors will support our goals.”However, the KBA CEO made itclear that downsizing andreorganising alone are not enoughto overcome the rapid structuralchange in large parts of the printing

industry. Bolza-Schünemann:“Shrinking markets, such asnewspaper, commercial andpublications printing, opposegrowth markets, e.g. packaging, digital printing and coding, as well asspecial markets, such as banknoteprinting, metal decorating or directglass decoration.

We aim to secure our current strongposition in these fields and expandon it further where possible.”Capacity adjustments and newacquisitions cannot be ruled out aslong as our liquidity is adequate, andthis is the case at KBA.” He cited thetakeovers completed in 2013 ofKBA-Flexotecnica in Italy active in thegrowth segment flexible packagingas well as KBA-Kammann in BadOeynhausen, Germany, a leader inthe premium niche market glassdirect decoration, as examples ofthis.

New web press start-ups like theKBA Cortina shown here atTrierischer Volksfreund in June 2014have become rare due to invest-ment restraint in the newspapersector.

KBA’s compact philosophy prevailsThe user-orientated compactphilosophy in press manufacturingintroduced by KBA in 2000 with theCortina and in 2007 with theCommander CT has established itselfon the market and has beenadopted by other manufacturers inthe meantime. Today 19 Cortinasand 26 Commander CT press linesare in operation worldwide, ten ofwhich with heatset dryers for semi-commercials.

The most recent Commander CTswere fired up in Baden-Baden,Germany, and Aarau, Switzerland, in2014. Waterless Cortina presseswent live in Trier, Germany, andTrondheim in Norway.

Demand in industrial countries forsuch high-end presses has fallen inpast years due to decreasingcirculations. Modular designed andretrofittable presses, such as theCommander CL launched in 2011,have become more popular. In 2014presses of this type have come onstream at Pressedruck Potsdam,Main-Echo in Aschaffenburg,Heilbronner Stimme (all in Germany)and at Ouest-France in Rennes.

Making print more attractiveIn Germany now three Cortinas (inTrier, Freiburg and Düsseldorf) withintegrated coaters have beenequipped for the production ofsemi-commercial products. Userscan reach new clients from thefinancial and creative scene withprint finishing.

This additional business improvesthe capacity utilisation and cost-efficiency of their investments. Untilnow the option of inline coatingusing the coldset process has beenlimited to waterless offset fortechnical reasons.

However, KBA recommendsexploiting the technical possibilitiesavailable today for striking ad forms, such as super panorama, half-cover,

SMART-Flap or Zip’n’Buy, also onconventional wet offset presses inorder to enhance print’s attractive-ness. It offers suitable retrofitpackages. Concentrating only onsaving in terms of content, visualqualities, personnel and technologyposes more risks than opportunitiesfor the printed newspaper.

It is available in five different webwidths from 895 to 1,300mm (35.2 -51.1in) and it can be retrofitted at alater date from the minimum tomaximum web width to meetaltering market requirements. (Seethe press release “New KBA RotaJET

The new RotaJET L press platform unveiled by KBA at the WPE is available infive different web widths from 895 to 1,300mm and it is retrofittable in termsof printing width and colour availability for changing market demands. OliverBaar again promoted high-volume inkjet printing, also in combination withoffset if useful, as a way of expanding the print portfolio to enhance readerand customer loyalty, tap into new customer groups as well as networkingprint and online media. He drew on the example of the Main-Post in Würzburg which producedand distributed personalised covers for its daily newspaper on the KBA-RotaJET using subscriber data as advertising for reader holidays. Theresponse quote was well above average.

HP and KBA announced a partnership for inkjet solutions for the corrugatedpackaging printing segment at Graph Expo in Chicago 14 days before theWorld Publishing Expo. The press manufacturer aims to draw upon itstechnical know-how and experience in various market segments, even digitalprinting solutions, and sees itself as well positioned to meet the demands ofthe newspaper industry.

KBA has consequently expanded its service spectrum for own and third-party presses in light of the trend towards using existing machines for longer.Press overhauls and relocations, retrofits (e.g. for new ad forms) andmodifications, software updates, maintenance packages and all-roundtechnical production support with KBA or PrintHouseService (PHS) staff on-site, have become considerably more important in relation to business withnew presses.

KBA unveiled the most flexibleand the most adaptable high-volume inkjet product series in

terms of customer demandscurrently on the market at Worldpublishing Expo 2014 inAmsterdam.

The digitalisation of the printingindustry is progressing. At the sametime in the high-volume inkjetprinting segment requirementsregarding the configuration, features, maximum web width and productiv-ity of digital printing systems areextremely varied in the book, directmail, magazine, newspaper andindustrial printing market segmentsaddressed by the KBA RotaJET. Thisis in addition to the change in marketdemands over time due to theincreasing expansion of digitalprinting. KBA is the first manufacturerto take these circumstances intoaccount with the new retrofittableRotaJET L product series available invarious web widths, maximumprinting widths and colour content. The KBA RotaJET 89 – 130 printingsystems based on this new seriessupplement the RotaJET 76 which isstill available.

Future users of the new RotaJET Lplatform have a huge advantagewhich allows them to react quicklyand economically to changingmarket conditions and customerdemands without the need to investin entire new kit straight away. Thehigh-performance RotaJET can beoptimally configured to suit therespective market and industryenvironment. The new KBA digitalpress series includes five RotaJETprinting systems which can handleweb widths ranging from 895 to

1300mm (35.2 - 51.1in). As all thesenew systems have been developedbased on an identical platform it ispossible to upgrade a KBA RotaJET89 (web width 895mm/35.2in) easilyand quickly to a RotaJET 100,RotaJET 112, RotaJET 123 or even apremium RotaJET 130 (web width1,300mm/51.1in). Furthermore, it isalso possible to modify a 1Cmonochrome system into a 4Ccolour system.

The KBA RotaJET L series is the mostflexible and future-proof high-volume inkjet system for userscurrently on the market. It allowsusers to react quickly to changingcustomer demands without theneed to invest in entire new kit(2)The RotaJET 130 is currently theonly high-volume inkjet system witha web width of 1,300mm to offertop quality 4-colour printing. Therefore the RotaJET 130 repre-sents the ultimate high-end systemin high-volume inkjet.

Founded on KBA’s long-termdevelopment strategy and the press’consistent modular design the KBARotaJET has been designed to beretrofitted with future print headgenerations.

This means that the KBA RotaJET 89–130 platform is the most flexible andfuture-proof high-volume inkjetsystem for users currently on themarket. What is more, the RotaJET89-130 systems do not require anyadjustment of the usual web widthsor print substrate logistics as theymight in web offset printing. Relocation and reconfiguration of printingtowers at the Times of India in Delhi andMumbai.

The Times of India (TOI) is one of the mostimportant newspaper publishers among thecustomers of manroland web systems. Thecompany relies on COLORMAN, GEOMAN,REGIOMAN, and double-width CROMOMAN 4-1systems as the technical basis for its success. Tocontinue building on its leading position, the Timesof India has decided to expand its printingcapacities in the Delhi region and increase itsflexibility in Mumbai.

Two GEOMAN printing towers were recentlymoved from the TOI printshop in Mumbai to thepublisher’s Sahibabad location in northern Indianear Delhi. An existing GEOMAN system was alsoexpanded to include six towers. TOI now has theprerequisites to produce 48 color pages. Coloradvertising is an increasingly popular option, especially during festival season in the fall. Nowcomplete, this new configuration makes it possibleto cater to these demands and print newspaperswith 40 or 48 pages. Thanks to the collaboration between engineersfrom the main publishing house and colleaguesfrom manroland India, the time required to convertthe GEOMAN and get it back up and running couldbe reduced considerably.

COLORMAN in Mumbai now even more flexibleThe Times of India is also the main user ofCOLORMAN systems in India. To ensure evengreater flexibility in terms of page numbers, twopresses in Mumbai were connected across allsections. An additional web path guides two websfrom one system through the balloon-former to thefolder on the second system. This enables theprinting of products with up to four 16-pagesections or 64-page newspaper copies. And theoriginal web path can still be used. In addition toadditional web leads and turner bar levels, manroland web systems installed a new registercontrol system.

Greater availability just in time for festival seasonProject lead Dr. Ralf Schädlich explains: “Thechallenge with this project was that the entiresystem still needed to be available for dailyproduction. The customer could only offer to takea short break from using the system for three days.During this time, we also needed to do all testingand commission the system. At night, the presseskept running at full capacity. The actual conversionprocess took place in less than three weeks.”

manroland web systems presents modern and visionary options foreconomic newspaper production

Offset and digital printing are linked ever closer. Hybrid newspaperprinting offers many advantages. This goes far beyond inkjetimprints and the insertion of digitally printed newspaper supple-

ments. Entire production lines containing both offset and digital printingpresses are set to increase the economic viability of print production.

Hybrid developments can already be found everywhere, especially in theautomotive and commercial vehicle sectors. The crucial advantage of thisapproach is the flexible selection of the most appropriate technical solution, such as the use of electrical engines or combustion engines depending onthe specific application. However, nowadays the same flexibility is alsorequired when it comes to the production of print products, using the sameprinting system to produce multiple products at the lowest possible cost.manroland web systems is the first printing press manufacturer to offerhybrid newspaper press systems.

In addition to the established print finishing systems for digitally printednewspapers, manroland web systems also focuses on its expertise inworkflow integration, for example with the DigiLink module. DigiLink allowsplanning of offset and digital productions from a central workstation, including parallel monitoring of production during printing and in themailroom. With this unique capability of integrating various print systems witha shared data base, the German printing press manufacturer aims to advancethe development of hybrid newspaper printing systems. In line with thisstrategy, a number of new business and publishing models offer companiesnumerous opportunities for economic newspaper production and marketdiversification.

Made famous by theSpringer publishing house and its daily pass for the Internet version of theGerman Bild newspaper, the imprint of highly variable inkjet data in ongoingnewspaper production has been proven effective.

The contents may include lottery numbers, current news, QR codes, or area-specific personalized advertising. As an OEM partner of the Kodak StreamInkjet technology, manroland web systems can equip and integrate inkjetfunctionality into web offset print systems of all major manufacturers. Thescope of services ranges from providing inkjet print heads up to compre-hensive project management for fully automated solutions. In this case, theinkjet module is completely integrated into the press control system.

Dynamic, time-saving jobchangeovers contribute to the economic production of these short-runadvertising, topical, and local supplements. Local journalism is upgraded notonly through pre-printed sections; some publishing houses have alsostarted to digitally print entire local issues of newspapers. This pays off forsmall print runs and offers a logistic advantage: in vast countries, the productreaches the customer quickly while lowering shipping costs.

It offers thebest cost per copy ratio for everyrequirement – purely offset printingfor high print runs without jobchangeovers, hybrid productionsfor part editions of the daily paperwith short production cycles andvariable formats, and purely digitalproduction for print runs startingfrom a single copy. The hybridmode in particular offers a widerange of options – changeoversfrom one edition to the next areeliminated, for example for a dailywhere the 4-page jacket for variouseditions is printed digitally. Larger-than-life images ofcherries, oranges andavocadoes adorn the horse-

shoe-shaped roof of Rotterdam’smarket hall, turning it into a work ofart that has been compared to theSistine Chapel but is actually called“The Horn of Plenty”. The market hall, designed by a team including thearchitectural firm MVRDV, propertydeveloper ProVast and architectWiny Maas, houses not only foodstands but an apartment block of230 flats bending over the markethall in a surreal fashion.

The arch of the building is made ofnatural stones. The artworkconsisting of fruits, vegetables, meats, breads and butterflies –created by Dutch artist ArnoCoenen – has been printed ontothousands of aluminum panels onthe inside arch of the hall in a

process that holds great promise forbuildings around the world.

The printing company realizing thebrightly colored ceiling is TS Visuals,a specialized hard substrate printingcompany based in the Netherlands. It used the artwork by Arno Coenenwho enlisted the help of PixarStudios to create an image largeenough and sharp enough to fill4,000 aluminum panels. To realizeprintouts in the desired quality, theresolution had to be equivalent tothe resolution required by highquality magazine printers. Theresulting digital file holding theimages had an impressive size of1.47TB consisting of 400,000megapixels.

TS Visuals used a process calledsublimation, a unique method ofapplying visuals to coated metal or

Unique printing process creates the world’slargest artwork

glass. The ink of the printed design is heated to such high temperatures thatit turns into a gas and penetrates the coated aluminum panel. It transfers andthen forms a durable permanent layer inside the coating. The panels andcoatings were developed by TS Visual’s research department; they aregraffiti-resistant, UV-resistant and can be cut into any desired shape. For the Rotterdam market hall, 4000 panels, each two millimeters thick andmeasuring 1,50 meters in width and length, were decorated with a total of 6kilometers of unique images, using the sublimation process, to create avisual totaling 11,000 square meters. Because of the sound requirements ofthe building, the panels were perforated. They were also coated with aglossy, scratch-resistant finish.

TS Visuals emphasizes that sublimation offers a large number of novelpossibilities for applications in architecture, exteriors, interiors, transport, infrastructure, advertising and marketing.
