“Manage who you’re blocking.” You can add those people in your network

that you work for or work with so they don’t get any information about your

activity on LinkedIn.

“Select who can see your connections.” There are many schools of

thought on this. You open up your connections to spammers. But from a job

search perspective, it can be good for a future employer to see who you know

in common and who of your connections might impress them. Your call!

“Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile.” Talk to your

career coach about what might be best in your situation. I recommend

showing your full profile so potential employers know you’ve been doing your

research, and this makes it easier for them to connect to you.

“Select who can see your activity feed.” If you want to block future

employers from seeing your updates, then unclick “Your Network.” Your

network refers to all the people who know all the people who know all your

connections.

Most of what you want for privacy

(to avoid telegraphing you are

looking for a job) can be found on

the Profile tab. Click this.

“Turn on/off your activity broadcasts.” Uncheck thebox when you are making a lot of changes to your profile, so it doesn’t appear as if you are getting readyto look for a job (and 2. it annoys people to have allthese updates in their news feed)

See the next page for other settings that will be useful to you as you use LinkedIn

Once on this page, click on

the “Profile” tab in the lower

left portion of the screen

You can also control who is notified about changes to your profile right on your profile page, convenient when you are making the actual changes. Just click on the button that says “No” and it will toggle between Yes and No. You want to choose No.

Choosing “Anyone on LinkedIn” will insert abuttonon your profile to allow people to connect with you. Otherwise they are forced to send you an “InMail” which is an extra step many people will not take. Now is the time to add connections!
