PRIVACY CEILING BLOCKER TILE™Basement renovations, office spaces, even mixed use commercial spaces all present challenges that sometimes make a suspended grid ceiling the only choice. Mechanical ducts, plumbing and wiring conduits, uneven joist, and sloped joist are several reasons where hiding what’s there is the best option.

Grid system ceilings are too light to help in the creation of privacy between spaces; the only traditional options are very expensive ceiling tiles with sheetrock as the backer, or foil backed tiles which are touted as high performance noise blockers but really aren’t even capable of bare minimum STC ratings.

We have a simple, very effective solution for all suspended grid ceilings. Available in pre-cut sizes Privacy Ceiling Blocker Tiles are designed to fit directly above your current ceiling tiles. Tested to a STC 26, you can expect immediate improvement in the sound blocking of your grid ceiling.

You do not have to make any modification to your existing ceiling, and you don’t have to replace the tiles you already have. This system is simple to install by a maintenance man, or even by yourself.

Privacy Ceiling Blocker Tiles are available in two versions, one with quilted absorber layer (PPBT), and one without the quilt (PCBT).

To maintain the fire rating for your ceiling the simplest, cost effective method is to use PSLC. Privacy Light Covers are UL Approved in both commercial and wood frame construction. PSLC’s are very easy to modify for electrical or bracket penetrations, and suitable for air supply fixtures; save money and time by using Privacy Soundproof Light Covers.

Place cover over light and align with grid. Mark and slit for power cable and any support wires.

Place cover over fixture, align slits with power cable and wires before dropping into place. When aligned drop cover into place, Stick pins will extend through the cover. Install square pin washers to secure in place. Tape and seal all slits with reinforced foil tape (FSK).

Remove cover and apply peel and stick pins, with spacer, to top of fixture; center for 2x2 fixture, both ends for 2x4.

Align and secure end caps with provided stick pins. No washers are used here.

Privacy Recessed Light Covers have been tested to determine the change in ceiling noise blocking capabilities when can lights are added to the ceiling. A gypsum board ceiling was constructed and tested for STC (airborne sound blocking) and IIC (footstep noise blocking). The sound blocking results are listed below as Original Ceiling.

In the test lab a typical floor system with plywood floor, trusses, insulation and drywall ceiling is built that measures 16’ x 12’. The first test is with no penetrations, the second was done with nine 6” can lights and Privacy Recessed Light Covers.

As the data below demonstrates the STC (airborne sound blocking) is actually better with the can light and cover except at 125 Hz (-.6 decibel) and 250 Hz (-.2 decibel). The IIC (footstep blocking) was better at every frequency except 100 Hz (-.5 decibel). The small drops in performance would not be noticeable without a sound level meter.

CONCLUSION In summary you can install can lights, using Privacy Recessed Light Covers and keep the sound rating of your floor/ceiling the same. This is particularly important when you collaborate with us to create a luxury rated floor/ceiling, as previously there was no effective, simple option to protect the sound ratings when recessed lights are used.
