A message from the Old PrincethorpiansOld Princethorpians is Princethorpe’s thriving past pupils’ association. We are interested in keeping in touch with all past pupils, both young and old, their parents and former members of staff. We are particularly keen to foster links with the College and current pupils, with OPs bringing their experience and knowledge back to the school in a variety of different ways, but particularly in terms of careers advice and guidance.

We are delighted to have a presence, once again, at this year’s Prize Giving and would encourage all past pupils to stay in contact by registering on the Old Princethorpians’ section at www.princethorpe.co.uk. You’ll receive information on the latest OP news, events and merchandise via our termly e-newsletter, The Old Princethorpian, and have access to our database of OP profiles.

We are greatly looking forward to playing a full part in the College’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2016-17. There’s a wonderful programme of events planned, including a House of Commons Tour and Dinner, the Princefest Weekend and the Golden Jubilee Ball, we would urge you and your fellow OPs to get involved. It promises to be a memorable and historic year for the College and Old Princethorpians.

Congratulations to all on your exam successes and prize winning achievements, and good luck with your future endeavours!

The Rt Hon Mark Pawsey MP

Mark grew up in Binley Woods and Shilton in a large family with five brothers. He went to Lawrence Sheriff School in Rugby and later Reading University where he obtained a degree in Estate Management. Mark is a retired Old Laurentian Rugby Player and tries to watch England at Twickenham whenever he can.

Mark and and his wife Tracy have four children, two girls and two boys. Both boys attended Princethorpe College so Mark and Tracey are also Princethorpe parents. Mark started his own business, with his brother Mike, in 1982 supplying a range of products to the catering trade. The business grew to a turnover of £4.5 Million employing 30 staff in Rugby until in 2008 the business was acquired by a FTSE100 company.

Mark was selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate in nearby Nuneaton in 2004 to fight the general election held in May 2005, where Labour’s majority was slashed from 7,500 to 2,200 with a swing to Conservative of 6.2%. He was then selected for the newly formed Rugby Constituency seat in 2007 and went on to secure a victory at the polls with a majority of exactly 6,000 votes at the General Election in 2010. Mark was re-elected to serve the people of his home town in 2015 with a 10,345 majority.

During his first term of office Mark was a Member of the Department for Communities & Local Government Select Committee and in 2014 was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Rt Hon Anna Soubry MP, Minister for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans. Following the General Election Mark remained as PPS to the Rt Hon Anna Soubry in her new role as Minister of State for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise.

Mark is also a member of the All Party Groups on Manufacturing, Micro-Businesses, Packaging, Small Business, Sewers & Sewerage, Cycling, Speedway and Rugby Union and started the All Party Group for e-cigarettes.

The Wallis PrizeDonated by David, Christine and Ellie Wallis, in memory of their dear son and brother Alex, who died on New Year’s Eve 2010, six months after completing his A-levels at the college. Wallis, as he was fondly known, was a young man who lived life to the full; in so doing he epitomised the sense of fun and laughter that is so much part of our College ethos.

“Ours is a spirit of family and a spirit of brotherhood, formed by kindness and understanding, by compromise and mutual forgiveness, by gentleness, humility and simplicity, by hospitality and a sense of humour.”

Beth Harcourt

The Biodun Olanrewaju Memorial Prize This £1,000 cash prize is awarded annually in memory of Biodun Olanrewaju who sadly passed away while his sons were boarding at the College in the 1990s. Like him, the College gave unstinting care and support to Tunde, Jide and Yemi, three outstanding prefects who later studied at Imperial College, London. Yemi was Head Boy; Tunde and Jide were jointly awarded the Princethorpe Shield. The award, given in gratitude by the family, goes to the Lower Sixth student who best embodies the spirit and values of Princethorpe.

Michael Spelman

The Princethorpe ShieldThis, our oldest and most prestigious College award, was presented by Mr and Mrs Martin “as a token of our appreciation and gratitude for all that the school has done for our two sons”. The shield is awarded annually to the student who is seen to embody the spirit and ethos of the College in many facets of school life.

HymnsThine Be The GloryThine be the glory, risen, conquering Son;endless is the victory, thou o’er death hast won;angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave clothes where thy body lay.RefrainThine be the glory, risen conquering Son,Endless is the vict’ry, thou o’er death hast won.

Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom;let the Church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing;for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting.RefrainNo more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life;life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife;make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love:bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above.Refrain

Lord of All HopefulnessLord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day

I, The Lord of Sea and SkyI, the Lord of sea and skyI have heard my people cryAll who dwell in dark and sinMy hand will save:I who made the stars and nightI will make the darkness brightWho will bear my light to them?Whom shall I send? Here I am LordIs it I Lord?I have heard you calling in the nightI will go LordIf you lead meI will hold your people in my heartI, the Lord of wind and flameI will tend the poor and lameI will set a feast for themMy hand will save:Finest bread I will provideTill their hearts be satisfiedI will give my life to themWhom shall I send?

Here I am LordIs it I Lord?I have heard you calling in the nightI will go LordIf you lead meI will hold your people in my heart
