provided to parents & students separately by email.
Bishop of Woolwich & Reverend Canon
-----------Schunemann Visit Kingsdale
On Friday 28th September, we were
delighted to welcome The Right Reverend
Dr. Woyin Karowei Dorgu, the Bishop of
Woolwich & the Reverend Canon Benhard
Schunemann from St Stephen’s Church, Dulwich.
It was a very enjoyable visit, during which our guests
toured the school meeting students and staff, before
Bishop Karowei gave an inspiring talk to our young
aspiring leaders on the value of hard work and the
importance of humility. Thank you for visiting Kingsdale!
Sixth Form Open Evening
A reminder that on Wednesday 10th October 2018, we shall
be holding an Open Evening for Year 12 2019 entry. All
Year 11 students and parents are warmly encouraged to
attend this important transition event.
Prefect Ceremony
We would like to congratulate our new School Prefects who
were recently presented with their prefect ties in a special
assembly.
SCHOOL NEWS Ali Sparkes visits Kingsdale
Celebrated author Ali Sparkes, visited us on
Thursday 4th October and led special assemblies
& workshops for our Year 7 & 9 students. Ali is
the author of over 40 published books including
‘Car Jacked’, ‘Destination Earth’, ‘The Shape
Shifter Series’ and ‘Death by Detention’. Ali’s
presentations were highly engaging, full of
comedy and interesting recollections of the
1970s & 80s. There were discussions around
the dreadful topic of detentions, her journey as
a journalist and as a writer, followed by some
intriguing questions from the fantastic Kingsdale
audience.
It was an absolute
treat and we truly
believe that many will
be glued to the
recently published
books by Ali!
Shani Harris Sherwood – BMX Champion
Congratulations to Shani in
Year 7 who competed in the
National BMX Competition in
Leicester last weekend. She
did amazingly well coming first
in her race. Well done Shani!

expressed in our Student iPad Programme and for
embracing the potential of controlled digital learning in the
classroom. On Thursday 11th October between 6 - 7pm
there will be an interactive session to provide parents with
an opportunity to explore the objectives of the iPad digital
learning programme and discuss further how it works in
supporting teaching and learning. Solutions Inc., the
company maintaining our Student iPad portal and supplying
the iPad package with TotalCare Protection, will be on hand
to answer questions relating to their products and services.
In response to multiple requests, we are extending the
closing date for parents to sign up and place an order for

Visit to Magdalen College, Oxford
On Tuesday 2nd October, students from Year 12 & 13 had
the fantastic opportunity to visit Magdalen College, one of the
most prominent colleges at University of Oxford. They learnt
about the application process,
spoke to current undergraduates
and toured the beautiful
grounds. In the afternoon, the
students took part in a model
history tutorial and learnt more
about the approach to teaching and research adopted at
Oxbridge (Oxford or Cambridge). They also had the
opportunity to receive expert advice on how to negotiate both
the personal statement and interview stages
of the application process. A really inspirational trip!
Years 8 & 9 Girls’ Hockey – What a Great Start!
Wednesday 26th September saw the first hockey match of
the season for Kingsdale’s Year 8
& 9 Girls’ team against Blackheath
High School. Our goal keeper Liv
Pierce made some great saves
supported by her defenders and
there was some great attacking
play by Lola-Blue Ritche and
Blossom Mills.
Player of the match, nominated by the opposition, was Tai
Prince. Well done girls – a great start!
Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents
Book Title: Holes
Author: Louis Sachar
Age Range: 12+ years
Why students should read it:
Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began
with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-
grandfather and has since followed generations of
Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been
unjustly sent to a boys’ detention
centre at Camp Green Lake,
where the boys build character
by spending all day, every day
digging holes exactly five feet
wide and five feet deep. There
is no lake at Camp Green Lake.
But there are an awful lot of
holes.
It doesn’t take long for Stanley
to realise there’s more than
character improvement going on at Camp Green
Lake. The boys are digging holes because the
warden is looking for something. But what could be
buried under a dried-up lake? Stanley tries to dig up
the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale
of crime and punishment and redemption.

Year 9 French trip to Lille
The French department is once
again running its highly successful

skills at the Christmas market, enjoy
a waffle making demonstration
(and tasting!) and explore the
streets of Lille’s old town. Students
should ask their French teacher for
a letter or come to the Languages
Office at lunch time. Places for this
very popular trip fill up quickly so
reply slips must be returned as
soon as possible.

House News Eagle House News
This week we hear from Ms Fofana, Head of
Eagle House.
Eagle House are an outgoing and welcoming
house who never shy away from friendly
competitions. Over the last few years we have
taken part in an amazing range of different
activities which have helped our sponsored charity,
the Sickle Cell Society; a cause which is close to
many of our hearts. The Sickle Cell Society -------
---------------------------------------------believes
that individuals
with sickle cell
disease have the
right to quality care and aims to provide this. The
Society does not discriminate between the types
of sickle cell disorders or ethnic groups
concerned. Both sexes are equally affected, and
should have equal access to support and services
within a confidential and sensitive environment.
Their network of committed volunteers play an
important part in running the charity and helping
with fund-raising activities. Donations from the
public and fundraising activities are vital for their
support. www.sicklecellsociety.org
