“Leadership is second only to teaching in its impact on student outcomes. Principals and vice-principals play an essential role as school leaders to achieve this impact. ….”

ONTARIO LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK
Principals/Vice-Principals
“As no one else, you have the unique opportunity to create the character within your school. Your reach extends both into the classroom and into the community. The life, the values and the feeling of each school derive in large part from your commitment to your staff, to your students and to the gospel.”
(This Moment of Promise, 1989)

LEADERSHIP IN A CATHOLIC CONTEXT
“…describes what good leadership looks like based on evidence of what makes
the most difference to student achievement and
well-being.”

ONTARIO LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK
Even though we are accountable to the Ministry of Education because the Ministry creates educational policy, the starting point for Catholic educators is not the Ministry of Education. While scholarship and research provides a rich foundation for the development of sound instructional strategies and leadership practice, they cannot be the starting point for Catholic educators.
Proactive Catholic School Leadership
LEADERSHIP IN A CATHOLIC CONTEXT
Our starting point:
The Gospel of Jesus and the tradition of the Catholic church.

OUR CATHOLIC CONTEXT

LEADERSHIP IN A CATHOLIC CONTEXT
SERVICE:
“I come among you as one who serves.”
(Luke 22:27)
“If I then, your Lord and
Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should also do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15-16)
“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)

SERVANT LEADERSHIP
We are each called to visibly live out our commitment to justice and service.
Called specifically –
o To teach
o To heal
o To love
o To comfort
o To support
o To challenge
As Catholic Educators, we are accustomed to a process to infuse and integrate our students’ curriculum with Gospel values, and a Catholic worldview.
“Our foundational beliefs about teaching, learning, the profile of the learner, essential and specific learning expectations, and program modification all relate directly to our foundational beliefs about the life and work of Jesus Christ and the tradition of the Roman Catholic community which seeks to embody those beliefs.” Curriculum Matters, 1999

CURRICULUM MATTERS
As Catholic leaders, we must be equally adept and comfortable with the need to infuse and integrate Gospel values and a Catholic worldview into our leadership practices – our policies, processes, priorities, initiatives and routines.

UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN A CATHOLIC CONTEXT
“I have come in order that they may
have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10
Jesus responded to the immediate
human needs of those around him • Feeding the hungry • Healing the sick • Protecting the weak
Most importantly, Jesus responded to
the profound human needs • Acceptance • Love • Belonging

PERSONAL RESOURCES – RESILIENCE
“self-confidence brings with it the willingness to keep trying until it gets done, which is kind of a definition of resilience. Bouncing back from failure, you know, going in, that you're going to make some mistakes, and you're not going to accomplish it the first time around. But, if you're resilient and optimistic, you have hope, and you believe in the kind of capacities you and your staff can bring to the table.”
Ken Leithwood, 2011

PERSONAL RESOURCES – PROACTIVITY
“People who are proactive effect environmental change, they identify opportunities and act on them, show initiative, and persevere until they bring about meaningful change. They transform their organization’s mission, find and solve problems, and take it upon themselves to have an impact on the world around them.”
Crant and Bateman, 2000

A Matter of Perspective – The story could have been recorded as the ultimate defeat
We had a dream
We shared the vision
We gained momentum
We caused fear and resentment
We met opposition
Our leader was taken, and killed
A Matter of Perspective – The story could have been recorded as the ultimate defeat
We were afraid
We were scattered, and lost resolve
When we returned to the scene, even his body was gone
No trace of his presence remained
Nothing is left
All is lost
A Matter of Perspective – The story told in a way that changes everything
We had a dream
A new vision for the world, not characterized by power and domination, but by love and mercy
Some were so frightened by the change they were desperate to stop it in its tracks
Politics and intrigue momentarily prevailed, and He was crucified
A Matter of Perspective – The story told in a way that changes everything
But we should not have allowed ourselves to be afraid
Everything that he said would come to pass was true
Even death could not defeat him and He rose from the dead
The empty tomb is the ultimate sign of hope –evidence that life prevails over death
We now gather without fear, because we have the promise of life everlasting

He was open to people and their ideas
He believed in them
He was transparent before them
He treated them as equals
He forgave them
He spent lots of time with them
He acknowledged them in public and in private
He kept urging them on
He touched and held the most fragile
He served them
He loved them
He defended them
He gave them authority
He saw them as his greatest accomplishment

LEADING WITH AUTHORITY AND LIVING WITH AMBIGUITY
As Leaders, How do we live with the
ambiguity of our roles? We are called to live in such a way
that we come to understand the hopes and plans that God has for us, and His world.
Our challenge is to find: The peace necessary in our lives
to hear God’s voice (“The still point in a turning word”)
The wisdom to discern God’s will in what we see and hear (prayer)
The courage to respond as we are asked to respond (presence)
