Q How is a gift to the Foundation

different from my annual gift?

With the annual campaign, we start over again every year at $0. Your gift to the Foundation will provide a stable stream of funding, allowing us to continue what we’ve already started and expand to new areas of need. With your help, we will continue bringing people and change the odds for future generations.

If you have – that’s great! Please consider including United Way of South Hampton Roads in those plans to help us impact lives and solve problems we cannot even imagine today.

We will help you achieve that dream. You can decide where your money goes through either a donor-advised fund or a specific agency fund. Tell us what you want to do and we’ll make it happen.

Q What if I already established a legacy

gift through a trust or another

foundation?

Q What if my passion is to really impact a cause that’s important to me

and my family?

The United Way Foundation is…

The Women’s Leadership Councilbegan in 2002 to mobilize women and inspire them to become powerful philanthropists through leadership, fundraising and advocacy, making a difference in the lives of women and children in South Hampton Roads.

Determined not to put their important work at risk by depending on yearly donations, the WLC Endowment Fund was created with a simple gift from a founding member in 2004. This one woman inspired three others to step up to the challenge – raising $185,000.

The following year, through an initiative called “10 for 10,” another 10 women each pledged $10,000 for a combined annual gift of $100,000. Soon, another 10 entered the equation and then another. Now in its 10th year, we have 100 Women of Philanthropy, united in working toward a common goal of supporting women and children in South Hampton Roads. So far, these 100 women have contributed a collective $1 million to the WLC Endowment – today, the largest WLC Endowment Fund in the nation.

Way campaign before the Victory Dinner.

Since 2005, aside from increasing the endowment, the WLC has invested nearly $500,000 in community programs, including the H.E.R. Shelter, Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast and United for Children.

Moving forward, these powerful philanthropists will continue to focus on women, children and mothers by focusing on a two –generation approach to breaking the cycle of poverty in our community, offering support, the right tools and a path to self-sufficiency.

Yes, one woman can make a difference – these 100 women will remake a community.

Sweet Haven Baked Goods* is the creation of the HER Shelter, a 42-bed facility which provides sanctuary, counseling and other services to put homeless and abused women and children, in South Hampton Roads, back on their feet by providing the training and skills development needed to establish and stabilize themselves in solid employment. Success is sweet: in just one year, 34 women have completed the multi-week course, and from that enrollment, 31 have found employment. One outstanding graduate is Janessa, a 23-year old mother of three who sought refuge from abuse at the HER Shelter. In this safe place, she was able to sail through the Sweet Haven Bakery training program – learning budgeting, management skills, customer service skills and gaining register experience. Now, fully independent, this super achiever is a shift manager at Farm Fresh and also does cosmetic sales in her free time.

*Funding for this program was provided through a grant from the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way

Support of this program can continue with a gift to the HER Shelter Fund #032 at the United Way Foundation

• United for Children • Mission United

How does it work? What are the Collective Impact initiatives at United Way of South Hampton Roads?“Through a process called

Collective Impact we work together toward shared targets, goals, processes, solutions and resources. As applied to education, the idea (of Collective Impact) is relatively simple: The rate of educational improvement will accelerate, particularly for students living in poverty, if the numerous service providers in a community delivering programs from “cradle to career” work together and in partnership with the school district to align their activities around a set of agreed-upon goals, use metrics to make decisions and determine progress, and identify and implement best practices” (p.3).*

Since 1923, our community has trusted United Way of South Hampton Roads to support our most vulnerable neighbors through annual fundraising campaigns and donations, directing money to the areas of greatest need.

In 1999, a group of visionary volunteers established the United Way of South Hampton Roads Foundation to provide a stable, long-term funding stream for the community. The vision was to give an individual, couple, family, or group a safe place to invest a charitable gift where they could trust it would grow and support the community’s future needs, whatever they might be.

In 2013, United Way of South Hampton Roads realized it could do more, taking on a more innovative, proactive role of bringing people and organizations together to solve problems too big for anyone to solve on their own. And that mission extends to our Foundation, supporting that work solidly into the future.

Your gift will be made stronger through United Way’s centralized infrastructure, a dedicated staff and a systematic approach to problems – to do the most good and to remember your generosity now and 100 years from now.

Please join us. United Way of South Hampton Roads and our Foundation are committed to finding and supporting initiatives creating breakthrough change to our community’s most complex problems. Invest in the future through the Foundation.

United for Children: focuses on educational improvement – particularly for students living in poverty. In only its third year, United for Children has reached 4,000 students, in five schools, seeing measurable academic growth in math and reading scores, no summer learning loss, increased on-time attendance and good behavior – and with 100+ partners – we are just getting started!

Mission United: designed to support and solve problems for the 1.3 million active-duty military, veterans and their families in South Hampton Roads. Mission United aligns existing military support agencies through a web-based resource directory and a centralized phone number to assist with needs in employment, education, housing, health and emergency financial aid – serving those who have served our country.

FROM INDIVIDUAL ACTIONTO COLLECTIVE IMPACT

“The increased instructional time provided by United for Children directly impacted our students’ performance on the Virginia Standards of Learning so much so that our school moved from being in the lowest 5% in the state of Virginia to being conditionally accredited….this partnership between Norfolk Public Schools and United for Children is necessary, impactful and appreciated.” –Dr. Sharon Phillips, Principal at Tidewater Park Elementary School

Executive Officers & Committee

T H E P R I VA T E B A N K

ONE

Photo: It rained 22 consecutive days in

October of 1956 and the Women’s Division

only had three days to catch up their United

Way campaign before the Victory Dinner.

Since 2005, aside from increasing the endowment, the WLC has invested nearly $500,000 in community programs, including the H.E.R. Shelter, Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast and United for Children.

Moving forward, these powerful philanthropists will continue to focus on women, children and mothers by focusing on a two –generation approach to breaking the cycle of poverty in our community, offering support, the right tools and a path to self-sufficiency.

Yes, one woman can make a difference – these 100 women will remake a community.
