Object Study
The first exercise in Visual Communications was to start with three round objects. I chose a Magic 8 Ball, a pickle jar, and a cup. This exercise helped me to explore the objects that I had chosen while also exploring different image making techniques.
Within the image making exploration we had three different ways to show the objects: Photo-graphs, Illustrations, and Graphic Representations.
Within the exploration of each different medium, I realize that there are many different ways to represent the object.
Composition Study
The second exercise of Visual Communications was to use the object studies I had created and explore composition, only using 5 objects at a time.
The image at the bottom of this page is something that was an inspiration throughout the whole semester. I loved playing with the idea of chaos.
The first stage of this exercise was to use those five objects and, keeping them all the same size, create ordered and random compositions. I explored using hierarchy, overlapping, tension, clustering, the edge and space as strategies for creating variation.
The second stage of this exercise was, similar to stage 1, create ordered and random composi-tions with scale change within the objects.
Poster Series Study
The third exercise for Visual Communications was to create three poster series’ combining our objects from exercise one and three random social issues.
Kristina had us all rework our posters off of the computer. This really helped me to develop a tone for my poster series that I eventually used in the final poster series. Going off of the com-puter was a very rewarding experience that I continued to utilize as much as possible through-out the project.
After taking a step back and working off of the computer, this is how I reworked my posters. This eventually formed into the next exercise in Visual Communications.
Visual Identity System with Application
Exercise four of Visual Communications was to take the posters that we had worked on and now create an event that has a series of design elements including, three posters, a booklet, and a website.
The first step I took after reworking my posters was to create an event name, schedule, and wordmark.

Leadership Symposium: Social Issues Series
I was then told that my event name was a little boring so I moved on from “Leadership Symposium” and created “Stand UP Speak OUT”. I think this name is more exciting and would better attract the age range I am aiming for. I worked on the new name while simultaneously enhancing the poster by adding an additional element.
After taking a closer look at everything that I had created, I realized that not only did I have to chose between photo and graphic images for the additional element in the poster, but I had to rework the wordmark.
After finalizing the posters, I worked to create a booklet with the function of displaying the schedule for the day.
My final step was to create a mockup for a website that had the function of giving viewers more detailed information about the events for the day. I then coded it and made it a functional website.
