2013 Shaping up to be a great year

We’ve been busy in the past few months getting ready for our season in Europe, which for us begins in just a few weeks.

We’ve also managed to squeeze in a bit of fun, with Adelaide feeling the vibe of the Tour Down Under and Mad March (Mad? Because it’s a crazy time in South Australia with Festivals, the Fringe, motor racing and much more.

We helped launch a velo initiative with Barristers Block Winery and the Amy Gillett Cycle way path in the Adelaide Hill’s. We’re also excited to be behind the Adelaide Tour National Road Series event in May 2013.

Finally we also jumped for joy when the first Aussie, Richie Porte won Paris-Nice in March. A hugely talented bike rider and general all round nice guy. Congratulations Richie from all of us!

2013 Tour Down Under We were thrilled to finally get involved in our hometown event and first World Tour race of the season, After years of Steve racing in the event, it was nice to get reacquainted with this great race. Our day tours proved a huge hit, offering greater flexibility and choice. We look forward to offering Day Tours again next year along with a fully supported week long Tour. The Boatshed Trackside Luncheon was again a fantastic day out for all. We look forward to seeing you again in 2014! \

Steve’s Tip - Descend with confidence We all like to think we can descend really really fast. Indeed we all can, but all too often Steve see's or hears about crashes that could have easily been avoided with the right approach. It's just one reason why we've created procyclingskills, so to better educate recreational riders on the art of descending safely, but also getting maximum enjoyment. 'One of the biggest mistakes I see from riders is not choosing the right line into a corner, often leaving their turn way too late. I teach clients how to commit to a corner (particularly left hand blind corners) much earlier that they would expect. The sooner you can 'lean' into the corner the more control you have. If you have entered in a little early, that's fine as it's very easy to make a correction and exit early. It's far more difficult to dive in deep if you have started too wide as before you know it and with the speed you're carrying you are around the corner and on the other side of the road. Further, always look for the straightest line through corners, this also helps should a hazard pop up as you have much more control of your bike and minimising the need to turn! Recreational riders have a habit of swinging and swaying their bike unnecessarily and don’t always look for the straightest way down a windy road. Unnecessarily angling you bike also increases the risk of crashing should a hazard pop up. Finally, be sure to give yourself plenty of space between yourself and the rider in front of you - at least 10 metres on a fast descent. Should they have a mechanical, hit a hole or crash, you simply have nowhere if you're sitting right on their wheel. If they choose the wrong line, you're also likely to follow - this is one of THE most common causes of crash and injuries on a descent and one that can be easily avoided!

Since its launch late last year, procyclingskills has helped many riders achieve better riding skills and as a result have made their time on the bike more effective and more enjoyable. With the European season upon us, procyclingskills will take a break during the winter months but return in October. So anyone interested in taking a couple of sessions or a block of 5 either one on one or with your own group contact Steve today and we’ll get you started later this year.

Don’t just take our word for it, here is some of the feedback we’ve received already.

And remember when you book a procyclingtours holiday, you automatically receive personalised coaching from Steve.

“Thank you so much Steve for our sessions. I'm still jumping out of my skin with excitement from this morning, I know I'll never sleep tonight. Just checked the Strava data, and I can't believe how I've suddenly shot up to another league altogether. Wow!!! I am so excited that I can do this, and do it pretty well, feel such an enormous sense of achievement. Seriously, look at the Strava times and speeds, and can't believe that was me. I am SO excited. Sounds silly, but it makes me feel so strong and capable. I can sense my increased confidence and skill building exponentially every time I ride, and now I don't feel quite so undeserving and out of place on such a beautiful bike.” Janine

“Your coaching sessions were exactly what I was looking for! There are dozens of aspects to cycling, each of which contributes to your overall performance. I knew there were things that I could improve, if only someone could tell me where to start! Some things you just can't learn from a book. Using your years of experience, you were able to analyse how I ride and suggest things I could change to boost my performance and my cycling enjoyment. You are a great communicator and a great motivator. Thanks again.” Julian

Back to the good old days of racing?

Some might be forgiven to think that Steve has once again turned Pro Rider. Alas not to be, but it has not stopped him from giving it his best shot. Setting his sights for the National Road Championships in Buningyong in January and the Scody 3 Peaks Challenge in March was going to be a big ask. Determined as ever, Steve set his goals and put his training schedule into practice. Many people think that all the riding Steve does while on tour would be good and to some extent it is, but tour riding lacks the intensity and something Steve works hard on when back in Australia.

So how did he go?

3 Peaks Challenge Following on from his record time ride in the 2012 250KM Audax, Steve was not going to be outdone by the Scody 3 Peaks. With an elapsed time of 7hr 23 mins, Steve was well in front of the second rider across the line. Although not a race and there is no winner, and being a new course designed to avoid the areas hit by bushfires, Steve did manage an impressive average of 33km/hr and over the 234km ride climbed over 4000mts in elevation. Bring on 2014!

2013 National Road Champs The last time Steve race the national Series was 2007 – back then he was a little younger and a little fitter but no less hungry. Knowing it was going to be a tough gig given the amazing talent that Australia now has, he largely went along to rekindle old racing friendships and also to show the average punter that its never too late. The oldest in the field he went out all guns blazing and managed to stay at the pointy end of the race until a couple of laps to go. Procyclingtours team ride Tanya Freschi also achieving an incredible result in her first National event, (and 2nd road race ever) finishing only 8 minutes behind the winner!!

“That hurt more than I ever remember suffering during my professional career. It’s a little crazy why I put my body in so much pain — I used to race for a lot more than this. But I’m now 42 and these opportunities are starting to fade and I had to take it. It was an event I wanted to do well in, to prove to myself and my procyclingskills clients that you can always ride beyond your perceived abilities, regardless of age. And to be the first over the line to represent everyone who endured so much on this ride was a real honour.” Steve during a 3 peaks media interview

Meet the team who will help take care of you on our European Tours – The best in the business and more than just your average guides

We cant thank you enough for the support you have given us over the past few years as procyclingtours gets off the ground. With this, we are pleased to say we have grown a little this year, which means our team has expanded. We would like to welcome the newest members to procyclingtours. With a Personal Trainer/Masseuse and Nutritionist on board we have it covered.

A French-Canadian native, Vanessa is fluent in English, Italian, French and Spanish and divides her life between Québec and Italy. She is an experienced guide leader having led tours throughout Italy, France and Spain for the last 4 years. She is also a professional nutritionist and brings these skills on tours to add to your holiday experience. Vanessa has participated in cycling, running and triathlon races over the last 25 years. Delivering exceptions service, her passion for cycling and traveling has literally been driving her through the years and following a few cycling trips in Europe back in 2005, she fell for the cultural diversity and the conquest of legendary mountain tops. Vanessa decided to make her dream a reality and share the heart of cycling with its foreign 'aficionados'.

We have a long history with Ed and there is no one we entrust more with our client’s holiday experience. Ed is a very friendly, happy, easy going guide with several years experience leading tours in Italy, Spain, France, Belgium & the UK everything from winter training camps, the spring classics, grand tours & celebrity charity events. Ed brings extensive knowledge of European cycling with him and has a particular passion for anything involving the epic Mont Ventoux which he regards as arguably the best climb in the Alpes (you be the judge). Back home in the UK Ed runs a successful personal training & sports massage business dealing with gym-junkies, celebrities & professional athletes on a daily basis. He has spent most of his life on two-wheels starting out racing BMX before moving on to mountain bikes and onto road cycling. Ed has a real passion for helping people regardless of age, ability or background to get the most out of each & every trip that he is involved with.

Neville is an avid part-time cyclist who has toured much of Europe by bike over the years. With a strong corporate background, Neville has an understanding of maximising clients experience whilst on tour away from the hustle and bustle of work. A very competent guide in his own right, he will be joining the team for our 2nd TDF tour in July. Neville also happily provides mechanical support and is an all-round nice guy….not to mention a great wordsmith, so watch out for his talent on our website and facebook page.

A natural athlete, Ben has recently taken up cycling after many years focusing on other sports. It didn’t take long for him to find his legs and start racing the road series with great success. Successfully juggling a beautiful family and long established business (Stamford Mowers in South Australia) Ben’s passion pretty much covers anything on wheels, with or without a motor. Ben is an invaluable addition to the team during the Tour Down Under and many clients have already commented on his caring and gentle but encouraging demeanor.

Always with a smile on their face, this dynamic duo of Gloria and David are some of the most loyal and hard working team you’ll meet. Much of their work is done quietly behind the scenes during our tours and rides in South Australia. Dave, who has also recently joined the procyclingtours team on the bike, looks forward to one day conquering some ‘hills’ in Europe. While, Gloria, who’s passion is travelling, is a fantastic organiser and her infections and inviting personality is great to have on tour. She has also recently rediscovered the enjoyment of cycling. They are also not too shabby on the BBQ!
