1 Product certifications

1.1 Safety messages

WARNING

Failure to follow safe installation and servicing guidelines could result indeath or serious injury.

• This document contains information required for compliance with thecertifications.

• Use the level detector only as specified in this document and the productreference manual. Failure to do so may impair the protection providedby the level detector. Refer to the Rosemount 2140 and 2140:SIS LevelDetectors Reference Manual for more instructions.

• The weight of a level detector with a heavy flange and extended forklength may exceed 37 lb. (18 kg). A risk assessment is required beforecarrying, lifting, and installing the level detector.

Explosions could result in death or serious injury.

• Verify that the operating atmosphere of the level detector is consistentwith the appropriate hazardous locations certifications.

• Before connecting a handheld communicator in an explosiveatmosphere, ensure that the instruments in the loop are installed inaccordance with intrinsically safe or non-incendive field wiring practices.

• In explosion-proof/flameproof and non-incendive/type n installations, donot remove the housing covers when power is applied to the leveldetector.

• Both housing covers must be fully engaged to meet flameproof/explosion-proof requirements.

WARNING

Electrical shock could cause death or serious injury.

• Avoid contact with the leads and terminals. High voltage that may bepresent on leads can cause electrical shock.

• Ensure the power to the level detector is off, and the lines to any otherexternal power source are disconnected or not powered while wiring thelevel detector.

• Ensure the wiring is suitable for the electrical current and the insulation issuitable for the voltage, temperature, and environment.

Process leaks could result in death or serious injury.

• Ensure the level detector is handled carefully. If the process seal isdamaged, gas might escape from the vessel (tank) or pipe.

Unauthorized personnel may potentially cause significant damage to and/ormisconfiguration of end users’ equipment. This could be intentional orunintentional and needs to be protected against.

1.13 Instructions for hazardous area installations

1.13.1 General safety

1. Installation of this equipment shall be carried out by suitably trainedpersonnel, in accordance with the applicable code of practice.

2. Inspection and maintenance of this equipment shall be carried out bysuitably trained personnel, in accordance with the applicable code ofpractice.

3. The user should not repair this equipment.

4. The certification of this equipment relies upon the followingmaterials used in its construction:

5. If equipment is likely to come into contact with aggressivesubstances, it is the user’s responsibility to take suitable precautionsthat prevent it from being adversely affected, thus ensuring the typeof protection is not compromised.Aggressive substances: Acidic liquids or gases that may attackmetals or solvents that may affect polymeric materials.Suitable precautions: Regular checks as part of routine inspectionsor establishing from a material's data sheet that it is resistant tospecific chemicals.

6. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure:a. The voltage and current limits for this equipment are not

exceeded.

b. The joint requirements between the probe and the vesseltank are compatible with the process media.

c. The joint tightness is correct for the joint material used.

d. Safe working practices for the media and process concernedare followed during the installation and maintenance of theequipment.

7. The probe fork is subjected to small vibration stresses as part of itsnormal function. As this provides a partition wall, it is recommendedthat the fork should be inspected every two years for signs of defects.

8. Technical dataa. The operating pressure must not exceed the rating of the

fitted coupling or flange.

b. For material details and pressure ratings, refer to theRosemount 2140 and 2140:SIS Level Detectors Product DataSheet.

c. Year of manufacture is marked on the product label.

1.13.2 ATEX specific instructions

The equipment has not been assessed as a safety related device (as referredto by directive 2014/34/EU Annex II, clause 1.5).

1.13.3 Intrinsic Safety specific instructions

1. The Rosemount 2140 and 2140:SIS may be used in a hazardous areawith flammable gases and vapors with apparatus groups IIA, IIB andIIC, and temperature classes T1 to T6. The temperature class of the

installation will be determined from the highest process or ambienttemperature.

2. The equipment with Product Certifications code “I8” is suitable forinstallation across the boundary between an area that specificallyrequires Equipment Protection Level Ga (Zone 0) and an area thatspecifically requires Equipment Protection Level Gb (Zone 1). Theprobe forks (and extension tube) are only to be installed in Zone 0.

3. When fitted with the Transient Protection Terminal Block (optioncode T1), the unit does not meet the requirements of clause 6.3.13(Isolation of circuits from earth or frame) in EN 60079-11:2012 (IEC60079-11:2011).

1.13.4 Flameproof and explosion-proof specific instructions

1. The Rosemount 2140 and 2140:SIS may be used in a hazardous areawith flammable gases and vapors with apparatus groups IIA, IIB andIIC, and temperature classes T1 to T6. The temperature class of theinstallation will be determined from the highest process or ambienttemperature.

2. The equipment is suitable for installation across the boundarybetween an area that specifically requires Equipment ProtectionLevel Ga (Zone 0) and an area that specifically requires EquipmentProtection Level Gb (Zone 1). The probe forks (and extension tube)are only to be installed in Zone 0.

3. Repair or modification of flame-paths is not permitted.

4. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure:a. The housing anti-rotation grub screw is screwed in fully.

b. The housing cover locking screws are unscrewed tightlyagainst the covers.

c. Only suitably certified cable entry devices will be utilizedwhen connecting this equipment. The cable entrytemperature may exceed 70 °C.

d. That suitable temperature rated cable is used. Forconnections in an ambient in excess of 60 °C, use cable ratedto at least 90 °C.

e. That any unused cable entries are sealed with suitablycertified stopping plugs.

f. The protective earth terminal is connected to an externalprotective earthing system.
