Market Research: Music Magazines

The purpose of research method was to find out what people wanted and attracted them to magazines. I created a survey via Survey Monkey and asked 10 different people. I analysed the results and collected the quantitative data.

I asked people their age in order to find out information on peoples lifestyle, how old a person is will often determine their knowledge and experience with the focus of the survey. 60% of the people I asked were aged 15 to 24; this suggests that they will still be in education, possibly with a part time job. From these results my audience will be aged 15 to 24. I will take into consideration the price and genre for my target audience.

These results show that the most common gender of the people that answered my survey were females. Therefore, I will make my magazine mainly to suit females as this survey is based on female interests. However, I will also include male content to attract males to my magazine as 30% of them were male. This interests them and influences a wider and varied audience.

I asked people how often they attended live musical performances to see if I could include any competitions or prizes to go and see a live performance in order to attract readers to my magazine.

After asking how often people listen to music a day I was able to determine if they actually liked listening to music. As 80% say they listen to music a day this emphasises that I have a strong target audience for my magazine.

I asked people how often they attended live musical performances to see if I could include any competitions or prizes to go and see a live performance in order to attract readers to my magazine.

I asked this question in my survey to find out about the people’s lives and income to find out how much money they are willing to spend on magazines. Due to the age of the people that answered my magazine, that they will presumably be students, still in education or have a part time job I need to ensure that my magazine is affordable and suited to my audience. The highest percentage of people willing to pay was 30% on the price range £1-£1.99, I will make my cost of my magazine around this price so it is cheap and affordable for my target audience.

I asked people in my survey what contents attracts them to a magazine; I asked this as I need to attract people to my magazine. By finding their interests I would know what to include to entice an audience. From my research it shows that the two main attractions to a magazine are celebrities, 55.56% and interviews 66.67% so I will include celebrities and interviews in my magazine.

From my results I found out that the most popular genre of music listened to by the audience was Indie so my magazine will be an Indie Magazine. I asked this question in order to find out what was the genre that people most wanted to read about and 62.50% was Indie. People also liked heavy metal and R n B, so I could include some of this genre in my magazine to appeal to a wider audience and increase sales.

I asked this question in my survey to see how much people stream online music through things such as YouTube and the radio for instance. 60% of the people I asked stream music online often which means that they are passionate and interested in music so will possibly buy my music magazine.

I asked this question so I could attract an audience to my magazine by including what the audience like. The images in a music magazine attract an audience to buy and read them therefore my images will be my main focus of the magazine in order to attract people to buy it and fit my audience’s interests.

I asked how often you read music magazines in order to find out if they didn’t read music magazines how I could influence people to read my magazine. 40% said they read magazines often and 60% said they didn’t. I will have to attract an audience by putting in contents that interests them.

From the research I collected from my questionnaire I have found out what attracts the audience to a magazine and what they would be interested in reading. My target audience will be aimed mainly for females but also appeal to males to attract a wider audience. The age category of my target audience will be 15 to 24 as this was the age group that answered my questionnaire the most; despite asking a range of people. I found that the majority of people listen to the genre of Indie music so I will make my magazine this genre. As people don’t read music magazines often I will have to attract an audience by including content that will interest them.
