Volition™ Network Solutions

Volition Network Solutions feature a unique fibre cabling sys-

tem providing “freedom of choice” in the design and opti-

misation of the overall network architecture. It also features

a state of the art voice and data copper cabling system,

including a Category 6 offering, providing “significant

channel performance headroom” over existing standards

and helping customers to migrate to higher bandwidth.

A variety of easy to install and innovative connectivity so-

lutions ensuring high performance, and reliable systems

form part of the offer. The revolutionary VF-45™ small form

factor fibre connector has helped in reducing the com-

plexity of fibre networking, while the 3M RJ 45 copper

products offer simple termination solutions – jacks snap on

without tools – with built-in reliability features and compo-

nent performance exceeding existing standards.

Fibre Interconnect Solutions

3M Fibre Interconnect Solutions offer a complete line of singlemode

and multimode ferruled fibre optic connectors including Hot Melt and

Crimplok™ connectors in ST and SC style. To complement this,

connectors are also available terminated as pigtails or patch cords

in a variety of lengths. There is also an extensive range of mounting

hardware and accessories including 19” patch panels and distribution

boxes. The Fibrlok™ mechanical splice, available in single and multi-

fibre versions for single mode and multimode fibre completes the

offer.

Copper Interconnect Solutions

3M Copper Interconnect Solutions include an extensive line of

insulation displacement connector (IDC) products for voice and data

applications and a comprehensive portfolio of complimentary acces-

sories including mounting frames, distribution boxes and installation

Distributed Network

In the conventional distributed structured cabling design, backbone

cable is optical fibre, with the horizontal segment of the network typi-

cally comprised of twisted-pair copper cable or optical fibre cable.

Backbone cables in an interbuilding network travel from a main cross-

connect (Distributor) to one or more horizontal cross-connects within

the telecommunication rooms on each floor, which includes active

electronics equipment such as hubs, concentrators or switches.

Zone Distribution

Moves, adds or changes in an open-office environ-

ment can be accommodated quickly and efficiently

through consolidation points by combining perma-

nent feeder cabling with preterminated plug-and-play

extender cables associated with the work area. Pro-

viding conectivity closer to end-users not only adds

flexibility, but also reduces network down-time and re-

cabling needs, which can result in significant cost

savings.

Centralized Network

Optical fibre’s unlimited bandwidth and ability to carry data over long

distances is best utilized in centralized networks. These networks

have more unblocked bandwidth than distributed networks and are

therefore better suited for combined voice, video and data traffic re-

quiring quality of service implementation. Optical fibre eliminates

intermediate closets, thus simplifying network layout and reducing

overall system cost. A centralized network is the most efficient and

cost effective way to implement fibre-to-the-desk.

The transmission capability of fibre makes it the ideal choice for the

backbone since this is where the traffic is concentrated. Additionally,

the superior distance capability of fibre makes it the ideal choice for

cross campus links between building distributors.

In the horizontal distribution, where traffic is less concen-

trated, Category 5e copper cabling meets all of today’s re-

quirements, adequately supporting transmission speeds up

to 1Gbps. Looking to the future, the increased performance

capability of the Category 6 system means that new appli-

cations are also likely to be supported thus providing a high

level of confidence that the network will last for many years.

Where there are special requirements relating to the ope-

rating environment (security requirements, electrical noise,

need for long link lengths or high bandwidth etc.), the use

of fibre throughout the network should be considered.

Zone Distribution Fibre to the Zone

Extending fibre out into the horizontal distribution

provides an economical alternative to installing fibre

throughout the network. This architecture is particularly

beneficial in situations where multiple users need net-

work access and there are cable containment issues.

It also provides a convenient upgrade path for high

bandwidth applications. Typical examples of where this

architecture would be of benefit would be conference

rooms and classrooms. In such cases a simple un-

managed switch would provide the copper/fibre con-

version. Users would access the network using copper

work area cords.

Although fibre has been used in the backbone for many years, wide-

spread deployment has been less common even though its benefits

and technical superiority have been widely accepted e.g.

• High bandwidth - up to 10Gbps on multimode fibre

• Immunity to interference - does not emit RFI is not susceptible

to EMI

• Security - very difficult to tap into

• Small physical size - six-workstation fibre cable is the same

diameter as a Category 5e copper cable

• Long distance capability - channel lengths much greater than

100m possible

Bandwidth and distance are probably the most important benefits

and the network designer can leverage them to great advantage e.g.

• Implementation of centralized architecture

- Eliminates Floor Distributors

- Simplifies maintenance

• Formation of “switch farms” alongside “server farms”

- Improves bandwidth, eliminates blocking

• Matching user/services/switch backplane performance

- Maximises bandwidth delivered to the end user

• More efficient usage of equipment ports

- More cost effective

If the network is properly designed, the network owner is not only

guaranteed the best-installed performance, he is also assured that

it will be usable in the future to support the most far reaching of

applications.

The examples that follow show three alternative ways

of deploying a centralized network architecture

• The home run: - fibre cable is pulled from the

building distributor all the way to the telecommu-

nications outlet

• The home run with splice point: - as above but

a splice is introduced to breakout the high fibre

count backbone cable into two and four fibre

horizontal cable

• The passive floor distributor: - a passive cross

connection point is retained and located in a floor

distributor

Is a centralized network more expensive?

Simply comparing the cost of components will not reflect the true

picture. As networks are designed to deliver a specified bandwidth

to users irrespective of network usage, a good measure would be

to compare the cost per Mbps delivered.

3M commissioned the Tolly Group to prepare a white paper1 to com-

pare traditional distributed network costs to those of a centralized

fibre network. The comparison was on a per-user basis. Using the

same network designs and costs found in that white paper the cost

per Mbps delivered for the two architectures based on 267 users is

shown below.

It can be seen that the centralized fibre network actually costs 48%

less per delivered Mbps than the equivalent distributed network while

at the same time delivering 160% of the bandwidth. It should be

noted that as the network bandwidths increase, the centralized fibre

architecture becomes even cheaper per delivered Mbps.

Centralized Network SolutionsFTTD - The Home Run

The Home Run - two or four fibre horizontal cable serving the work

area is pulled from the telecommunications outlet (TO) all the way

back to the building distributor (BD). A modular insulation displace-

ment connector (IDC) block is used to provide a flexibility point for

the copper voice cables only, therefore eliminating the need for a

floor distributor (FD). The block is mounted on a compact back mount

frame that can be supplied in a variety of configurations (free

standing, wall supported or wall mounted). The IDC block is use-

ful for adding and removing services when required.
