Enhancing Customer Satisfaction and Sales Performance through Product Training
TomTom at a glance:
- A global leader in
navigation and mapping
products.
- TomTom offers three
types of products:
navigation devices,
in-dashboard navigation
and car control services,
and navigation software
for installation on mobile
devices.
About the Customer
TomTom empowers movement. Every day millions of people around the world depend on
TomTom to make smarter decisions. A Dutch manufacturer, TomTom designs and develops
innovative products that make it easy for people to keep moving towards their goal through
automotive navigation systems, including both stand-alone units and software for personal digital
assistants and mobile telephones. TomTom also creates GPS sports watches, as well as state-of-
the-art fleet management solutions and industry-leading location-based products. TomTom’s
business consists of four customer-facing business units: Consumer, Automotive, Licensing and
Business Solutions.
Founded in 1991 and with its headquarters in Amsterdam, TomTom has 3,600 employees
worldwide and sells its products in over 35 countries.
The Customer’s Needs & Challenges
TomTom is the world's leading supplier of in-car location and navigation products. The customer
recognizes the need of continuously marketing the unique value of their products to users, in order
to maintain its market leadership. At the same time, the customer also considers it important to
educate and train its sales workforce on the product features and differentiators.
TomTom needed a product training solution that could address its key needs of educating users
and training sales teams. At this point, TomTom engaged InfoPro to analyze their existing training
model and suggest the most effective and intuitive online training solution for its flagship Ground
Positioning System (GPS) navigation product. The customer wanted InfoPro to:
Conceive and design an internationalized Graphic User Interface (GUI)
Introduce art direction for "eye candy" appeal
Develop instructionally sound visuals
Enable a solution for easy localization in 16 languages
Flexible training duration was another unique need presented to InfoPro. For the convenience of
the learners and time available, TomTom wanted learners and users to have the flexibility of
choosing between four time durations:
15 minutes
30 minutes
60 minutes
120 minutes

The InfoPro Difference – Learning for Performance
Technologies & Tools
used:
-Flash
-XML
- The content of all sixteen
languages and all four
time durations is
packaged into one
solution. The modules are
rendered dynamically. This
dynamic rendering is
facilitated by programs
through a language
selection option.
The InfoPro Solution:
Analyzing the unique needs of customers, InfoPro set its benchmarks high, to develop a
differentiated product training that could accommodate all customer needs within a single
solution. InfoPro designed this project in two phases:
Visual Design Phase
Development Phase
In the Visual design phase, we developed 5 design concepts and asked the customer to select its
favored two top preferences. Thereafter, we developed proof-of-concepts (prototypes) for the
chosen two designs. Upon acceptance of the prototype by the customer, we started the
Development Phase.
We developed a Flash and XML-based training product solution that is configured for multiple
time durations. Also, the entire textual content is rendered dynamically using XML files to facilitate
the ease of update and localization.
The content for all 16 languages and all four time durations is packaged as one inclusive solution.

The reference content shared by the customer is treated with proven instructional design
strategies to chunk it into concise and crisp "info-bytes".
The GUI for the training is designed on the concept of an interactive multimedia solution,
embellished with pop art. Also, the look, feel and design of the GUI are created using TomTom’s
branding so that learners can easily relate themselves to the learning environment. Instructional
strategies used in the product training solution included:
Information mapping
Analogies
Scenarios
Role-plays
Animations
Scenario-based assessments
Training Outcomes
TomTom saw a tremendous change in the overall enthusiasm of the learners leading to enhanced
business efficiency and high business growth. Major training benefits included:
An end product was a highly powerful product training tool.
The ability to offer multiple durations, which increased the training uptake.
Powerful visual messaging transformed product users to product advocates.
Real-world examples, scenarios, role-plays and additional sources that engaged learners and
led to longer and better retention.
