The arrival of Dance Clan 3 reawakens our early commitment as a company to nurture story-telling by giving our artists a chance to express themselves choreographically. It’s been a while since Dance Clan in 1998 and Dance Clan 2 in 1999 when we celebrated new works created by our company members and I think about these artists today and what they are doing both within Bangarra and elsewhere, appreciating all the more the signi!cance of these professional development opportunities.

Story-telling through dance theatre begins with powerful ideas and the ability to craft those ideas onto the stage, working collaboratively with the dancers in time and space. Currently, we have a talented group of senior women artists who I believe are ready to take this next step to becoming choreographers. As performers we’ve appreciated their unique dance style and now as choreographers we’ll see their personal dance language emerge and develop as they hone their craft.

The timing of Dance Clan 3 is signi!cant as our Bangarra season forms part of an important new initiative - the inaugural Corroboree Sydney, a festival to celebrate Indigenous arts and culture. I am proud of the diversity in the choreographers work for Dance Clan 3 and the contribution they have made to the continuing songline of Bangarra’s storytelling. These works come from the artists’ own backyards, their heritage, their cultural in"uences, their life experiences.

Signi!cantly Dance Clan 3 welcomes you, our audience, into the sacred space of our rehearsal studio, into the intimate performance space of Bangarra’s home in Sydney where we have created works since 1997 and hope to present many more Dance Clan seasons to come.

Message from the Artistic Director

Stephen Page

Bangarra Dance Theatre’s vision is:

To respect and rekindle the links between traditional Indigenous cultures of Australia and new forms of contemporary artistic expression;

To create inspiring dance theatre productions of integrity and excellence that resonate with people throughout Australia and the world.

Bangarra pays respect to and acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and the traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples whose customs and cultures inspire our work.

Dance Clan 3 Program

Nala‘Nala’ means light within the darkness in the Yawuru language. Set in Broome against the earthy red pindan soil and turquoise waters of Cable Beach, Tara Gower shares her grandparents’ story, about the triumph of love in a community con"icted by imposed progress.

Inspired by the spirit of the land, ‘Nala’ acknowledges divided social and cultural values, and drives awareness for a more sustainable, shared future.

MacqBy the early 1800’s, Governor Macquarie had established for himself a reputation as a generous and fair Governor of the broader Sydney region. His initiatives for the ‘natives’: providing farmland for the men, and schooling for the children, quickly fell apart as a result of a communication breakdown and a lack of understanding for Sydney’s Indigenous people.

In a telling story of place, instigations and rami!cations, we re"ect on the impact of the 1816 ‘March of Macquarie’ on Aboriginal people, speci!cally the Dh’arawal people, both past and present.

diveDive deep into this story from the Torres Straits and share a moment of breathlessness. Deborah Brown invites you to swim beside her in this dance !lm, as she acknowledges her ancestry and identity, re"ected in the iconic pearl shell.

In an intimate exploration of the waters of the Torres Strait, and those brave enough to risk their lives at the depths of the ocean, this dance !lm takes a brief look at the athleticism and stamina of two divers who put their lives on the line in search of the treasured pearl shells.

ImprintIn 1978 in the heart of Australia’s red desert, a group of inspired, resilient Aboriginal artists forged a movement – the Batik project, to support the claim for native title of their homeland, Utopia.

Yolande Brown embraces the Batik project in her choreographic exploration of the kindling of art, soaking of colour and stories into cloth that would stamp the knowledge of songlines, foods, bush medicines and more, back into the forefront of Australian politics and values in a process of transformation and liberation.

This process also sparked the journey of renowned artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye, whose yam dreaming stories, abstracted autobiographical designs, have been of signi!cant inspiration to this work.
