‘Board members need to continually reassess whether their Board needs to refresh and
update its professional expertise and capacity. This is not just about the recruitment of
new Board members but also the ongoing development of Governors already in place’
Sir David Carter, National Schools Commissioner
2019-20 Core Offer
This booklet includes all Governor training courses on offer for the 2019/20 academic year. We have included a
training matrix to help direct Governors to the most appropriate training linked to their role and specific
responsibilities on the Governing Body. We have also added an annual planner template to support the Link
Governor in devising an annual training plan for the whole Governing Body.
Course Bookings
Attendance is unlimited and free of charge to all Governors from schools that have a School and Governor Support
Service Governor Training and Development Service Level Agreement (SLA). However it is important that Governors
attend training and development in line with their roles and responsibilities, school priorities and their annual
Governor training plan.
Places are limited on each session and may be cancelled if numbers are low, so we recommend that you book early.
Governors whose school does not purchase the SLA can still access the training at a cost of £127 for up to two hours
of training (attendance at a two part or full day course is £254). Governors receive a certificate to show they have
successfully completed each course and are asked to complete an impact form to return to their Link Training
Governor, so the impact of attendance can be recorded and discussed further at your next full Governing Body
meeting.
To book a place: email [email protected] or telephone 03000 263306 and include a telephone
number for us to contact you in the unlikely event that a course is cancelled.
If a course is over-subscribed, you will be offered a place on the next occasion it runs or will be placed on the waiting
list and notified by email. If you require special assistance for vision, hearing or mobility, please let us know when
you book and we will be able to make necessary arrangements. Confirmation of your booking and joining
instructions will be sent by email approximately two weeks before the session.
Cancellation Policy
To cancel a place on a Governor course, please provide course title, date and applicant information to
[email protected]. Please note that if you withdraw within 2 working days of the start of the
course your school will incur a cancellation fee of £55. Courses run with a minimum of 10 attendees, if bookings
are below this number a course may be cancelled with 5 days notice and you will be offered an alternative date.
In House School-Based Training
We also offer training delivered in your own school. A number of sessions from the booklet can be delivered, or a
bespoke session designed to suit the specific needs of your Governing Body. These sessions need to be booked as
far in advance as possible. Each school who purchases the School and Governor Services Governor Training and
Development SLA can access one in house session per year and can purchase further sessions if required (subject to
trainer availability). Schools can pool their sessions together to enable more Governors to access the sessions and
gain maximum benefit from the SLA. For schools not in the SLA, this service can also be provided. For a quotation
please email [email protected].
There must be five or more Governors in attendance for an in house session to run. In the event of cancellation of a
pre booked in house session the following charges apply: on the day of the session, full cost or SLA booked hours; 3
days’ notice a fee of £100 or cancellation within 2 weeks of date of session a fee of £55. To request an in house
session, please complete a GOV1 form which is available on the Education portal and return to
