James Curry is the Director of State and Local Government Affairs in the Pacific Northwest Region for Monsanto Company. In this capacity, James manages the company’s legislative and political interests in eight states in the northwest portion of the country, based in Portland, Oregon. He joined the company in the spring of 2014, working with an experienced group of individuals that make up Monsanto’s state and local government affairs team across the country.
Prior to joining Monsanto, he spent two years as the Director of Government Affairs for the Northwest Food Processors Association in Portland, directing the association’s legislative programs in Washington, Oregon
and Idaho. While at NWFPA, he successfully navigated a range of complex issues for the region’s food processing industry from taxes and regulatory fees to water quality and food labeling. In 2013, he oversaw the extension of an important tax benefit in Oregon to help keep local small and medium-sized food processing companies competitive globally.
Before joining the food and agriculture sectors, James worked for eight years with Washington State’s largest and longest-standing government affairs practice at Carney Badley Spellman, PS. While with the Seattle-based firm, he represented clients before the legislature on construction, insurance, health care, energy and general business issues. Major accomplishments included passage of professional licensing protection for construction design professionals, competitiveness issues for open-shop contractors and other small businesses, and environmental protections for the recreational boating industry. His professional experience also includes special projects for the Washington State Medical Association, Washington State Hospital Association, and a brief stint with a regional title insurance company in Seattle.
James serves on the board of directors of Oregonians for Food and Shelter and Washington Friends of Farms and Forests. He played a key leadership role in successful campaigns to defeat statewide mandatory GMO labeling initiatives in Washington in 2013 (I-522) and Oregon in 2014 (Measure 92).
Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, James received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Washington in Seattle. He lives in suburban Portland with his wife and two children.
