The Barclays Africa Enterprise development program was designed to teach skills and create an income for rural women in Mpumalanga. Over the past decade, it has given young rural women not only a relatively steady income, but also the self-confidence to take their lives into their own hands. Their skills and knowledge has enabled them to acquire an identity, respect and status within their community.

Reyneke Wines

Reyneke Wines is a certified Organic and Biodynamic farm and winery located in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Biodynamic agriculture comes from a time when there was a spiritual understanding of life in general and farming in particular. We try to never lose sight of this, putting people first, naming our cows instead of numbering them, and even studying the weeds (rather than just yanking them out) to learn why they’re there.

At Reyneke we strive for quality with integrity. Environmentally, this is covered by our adherence to organics and biodynamics. Culturally we do this through our Cornerstone project. Our workers are seen as the foundation of our house and the cornerstone of our business.

So, to give credit where it’s overdue, Cornerstone profits go to projects benefitting our workers and their families. To date, four worker families have been rewarded with their own homes, and currently we’re funding tertiary education for our first ‘farm child’.

Mc Alkion Water

Mc Alkion water has hexagonally shaped (six sided) water crystals which result in cellular hydration. The water has micro clustered - water molecules which are 2 to 3 times smaller than normal water molecules meaning that you will hydrate and rehydrate 4 - 6 times faster. Clients like AB de Villiers and John Deere can attest to this water.

Mc Alkion greatly assists in relieving common ailments such as migraines, irritable bowel, constipation, gout, headaches, hangovers and is excellent for rehydration, better absorption of nutrients, recovery from training and racing and flushing acid waste.

Yusuf Randera ReesYusuf is the co-founder and CEO of the Awethu Project. He grew up in a mixed-race family in Apartheid South Africa, a unique experience that shaped his identity and commitment to this country. In 2000 Yusuf was one of the top matriculants in Gauteng, and took up a scholarship at Harvard University where he studied Economics from 2001 to 2005 and graduated with Honours.

Yusuf then moved to New York to work in a volatility trading group for Credit Suisse Investment Bank, before being asked to set up his group’s business in Zurich in 2006. In 2007 Yusuf was awarded a South Africa-at-Large Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford, where he completed two Masters degrees, the first in Financial Economics and the second in African Studies (with the long-held goal of doing business in Africa in mind!).

At Oxford the idea for the Awethu Project took root, and Yusuf entered it into the largest business plan competition in the UK, run by the Oxford Business School. The idea was one of nine finalists, creating the momentum for Yusuf to move home after graduation and put the idea to the test. Six years later Awethu has grown from a R60 000 start-up operating out of Yusuf’s parents house into the most innovative, young, black entrepreneurship development company in South Africa. The company has raised over R160 million to invest in its vision, and it is backed by individuals and institutions ranging from Archbishop Tutu to the South African Government and Discovery Holdings. It is on the cusp of making positive systemic impact in South Africa. Awethu’s work has been recognised globally by the Clinton Global Initiative, the Echoing Green Foundation, and the Skoll World Forum.
