A Tribute to

Dr. Bertha Nelkin A”H A Founding Member of Bikur Cholim of Baltimore

On כד' כסלו the community mourned the loss of a great

woman,

Dr. Bertha Nelkin, a’h

בתיה בת משה חיים ע"ה

Dr. Bertha Nelkin was a founding member of Bikur Cholim of

Baltimore. She was the epitome of אוהב הבריאות and

channeled her compassion for the sick and less fortunate.

Everything our volunteers in Bikur Cholim do from patient

visitation to transportation to medical appointments to kosher

meal delivery, she did by herself together with her choshuv

husband Rabbi Yosef Nelkin ( he should be gezunt).

When accommodations were needed for out-of-towners

coming for medical help, they welcomed them into their home-

sometimes for months at a time. She and her husband would

spend Purim visiting the hospitals and bringing Shalach Manos

and smiles.

As Bikur Cholim grew, she headed the Visitation Committee,

expanding it to more facilities and training more volunteers.

She served on the Bikur Cholim Community Advisory Board

until very recently.

Dr. Nelkin should be a Meilitz Yosher for her husband, her

children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the k’lal.

May she be an inspiration for us and keep us focused on what is

Bikur Cholim Volunteers

To Our Dear Volunteers,

Each and every day, we receive messages from people in

our community as well as from out-of-town requesting

anything from someone to stay with a family member in the

hospital, to rides to medical appointments, food at the

hospitals or for a homebound patient, medical equipment, a

visitor, and the lists go on and on. With siyata dishmaya, we

are able to fulfil most of the requests we receive.

But we can do so only because of you, our wonderful,

dedicated volunteers! It is you who drive hundreds of

patients to doctors appointments, cook meals, visit people in

the hospital, stay with babies overnight in the hospital, stock

the Kosher Hospitality Rooms on a regular basis-day and

night- and the list goes on and on. We are so fortunate that

you are on our team and we want to take this very small

opportunity to thank you not only on behalf of the

organization but on behalf of everyone of the hundreds and

hundreds of individuals we help each year.

As our mission statement says, Bikur Cholim is here to

enable patients to focus on their recovery by providing

assistance...at no cost to them. We are only able to provide

these services because of our tremendous team of

volunteers.
