Indonesia is the third largest cocoa producer in the world and has its own uniqueness. Indonesia is also one of the
biggest grinding countries in the world, with some 600,000 ton of installed capacity, producing cocoa liquor, cocoa
butter, cocoa powder and cocoa cake. A number of established companies have recently increased grinding capacity and
Barry Callebaut, Cargill, Guan Chong, and JB Cocoa have all established grinding capacity in the country in recent years.
With this tremendous growth in grinding capacity comes many challenges. The most significant of these challenges
is how to arrest the ongoing decline and increase cocoa production to satisfy local and global demand in a way that
establishes a truly sustainable cocoa supply chain in Indonesia. Indonesia is a key player as both a cocoa producer
and cocoa processor and the sustainability of its largely small holder farmers is critical to the global cocoa economy.
Empowered smallholders support the sustainable cocoa industry.
