eighth annual program on pain awareness Pain Management in 2014: Issues, Challenges and Treatments October 10, 2014

STATEMENT OF NEED Pain, whether it is acute or chronic in nature, is a complex problem impacting all domains of life. Treatment mandates that providers understand not only the causality and its manifestations, but also the everyday challenges it poses to patients. The biological and social sciences are providing us with a better understanding of the interplay between physiologic adaptation to pain and our behavioral response. As a result of attending this program, the participant will be able to identify issues and challenges inherent in pain management and describe effective treatment strategies for both the acute and chronic phases.

TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is targeted to registered nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, case managers, physician assistants and home care clinicians.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES HSS professional education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the completion of the course, the participant should be able to:

✔ Identify the barriers and challenges patients and families face in developing an advanced directive.

✔ Describe the biological markers currently identified in pain research which impact a patient’s pain experience.

✔ Discuss the difficulties inherent in treating obese patients with painful conditions.

✔ Describe the treatment process involved when dealing with pain medications to avoid misuse.

✔ Discuss strategies for treating diabetic patients who are at risk for developing peripheral neuropathies.

✔ Identify the challenges inherent in treating patients undergoing a painful orthopaedic procedure.

ACCREDITATION AND CREDIT DESIGNATION Hospital for Special Surgery is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This activity has been assigned Approval Code NYP269-7/13-16.HSS10.10.14.

6.5 contact hours will be awarded onsite and online.

Accredited status does not imply endorsement by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, Hospital for Special Surgery or the American Nurses Credentialing Center of any commercial products or services.

FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE In accordance with the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Standards for Commercial Support, all CNE providers are required to disclose to the activity audience the relevant financial relationships of the activity directors, planning committee members, presenters, authors and staff involved in the development of CNE content. An individual has a relevant financial relationship if he or she has a financial relationship in any amount occurring in the last 12 months with a commercial interest whose products or services are discussed in the CNE activity content over which the individual has control.

It is the policy of Hospital for Special Surgery to request all financial relationships that activity directors, planning committee members, presenters, authors and staff have with commercial interests, but to disclose to the activity audience only the relevant financial relationships.
