10 HOMES THAT CHANGEDAMERICA highlights homes that trans-formed residential living, from grand estatessuch as Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello andFrank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, to thepueblos of Taos, New Mexico.

10 Homes offers a primer in residentialarchitecture and a fascinating lesson in thehistory of American domestic life, as theevolving design of these homes over timereveals our changing relationship with na-ture, technology, and each other.

Taos Pueblo, New Mexico(c. 15th century)America’s first “green buildings,” the pueb-los of the Taos Indians of New Mexico werebuilt with adobe (mud), which kept thedwellings cool during the day and warm atnight. Their closely-packed design fostereda sense of community and offered protectionagainst enemies.

Fallingwater – Mill Run, PA (1937)Often considered the greatest triumph ofAmerica’s greatest architect, Fallingwaterwas Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterwork.Using a cantilever structure, Wright’s cre-ation descends in layers like the waterfallthat graces the site, taking the concept ofintegrating a home into its landscape to itsultimate extreme. The house would changeour perception of how a home could be in-tegrated with its environment, and resusci-tate the career of a great American architect.

Eames House – Pacific Palisades, CA(1949)In 1945, the publisher of Arts and Architec-ture Magazine challenged a handful of ar-chitects to design modern, affordable hous-ing that could be easily replicated. Amongthose to answer the challenge was the hus-band-and-wife team of well-known furnituredesigners Charles and Ray Eames. Despitebeing created from a wide variety of prefab-ricated materials, the Eames House showedthat a factory-made home could still havestyle and personality.

10 TOWNS THAT CHANGEDAMERICA takes a a look at ten “experi-mental” towns that did not evolve organi-cally over time, but instead were designed(or redesigned) from the ground up by archi-tects, corporations, and citizens who soughtto change the lives of residents using archi-tecture, design, and urban planning.

St. Augustine, FloridaAmerica’s oldest colonial town and the firstplanned town in America was designed us-ing King Phillip II of Spain’s 148 “Laws ofthe Indies,” which governed how colonistsshould settle the new world. The laws gov-erned everything from the width of thestreets to the proper place for the market.

Salt Lake City, UtahWhen the first blocks were laid out in thisMormon town in 1847, the man whoplanned it—Joseph Smith—was long dead. But Salt Lake City, built by Brigham Youngusing Smith’s “Plat of the City of Zion,”combined divinely-inspired urban planningdesigned to create a city dedicated to God.

Pullman, IllinoisIn 1879, railroad car tycoon George Pull-man started building a new factory townsouth of Chicago that would be a workers’utopia—or so he thought. His architect cre-ated a variety of housing, large homes formanagers and tenement blocks for unskilledworkers, which Pullman would rent out at aprofit. When a strike ensued in 1893, theIllinois Supreme Court ruled that a companydoes not have the right to control the hous-ing of its workers.

Levittown, New YorkBetween 1947 and 1951, Abraham Levittand his sons William and Alfred built17,447 houses in a former potato field onLong Island and named it Levittown. Cheapand geared toward returning GIs and theiryoung families, Levittown offered buyers aninroad into the American dream of homeownership—but only if you were white.

10 PARKS THAT CHANGEDAMERICA tells the story of ten innovatorswho took open canvases of land and trans-formed them into serene spaces that offercity dwellers a respite from the hustle andbustle of urban life.

From the elegant squares of Savannah,Georgia, to a park built over a freeway inSeattle, to the more recent High Line in NewYork, each story introduces us to the heroeswho brought these parks to life.

San Antonio’s River Walk – TexasThe San Antonio River had been alwaysprone to flooding; in 1921, more than 50lives were claimed. But 27-year-old archi-tect Robert Hugman transformed the flood-ravaged banks into a Spanish Revival prom-enade that would serve as a commercial dis-trict with elegant shops and cafes. The RiverWalk not only transformed San Antonio, butshowed other American cities the possibleeconomic upside of urban parks.

Freeway Park – Seattle, WashingtonIn Seattle, the damage was already donewhen a freeway cut the city in half in 1966.But landscape architect Lawrence Halprinwould heal the wound with a new kind ofpark built on top of the freeway, embracingboth nature and the changing face of the city.

Gas Works Park – Seattle, WashingtonA toxic waste site is an unlikely place for apark. Yet in the mid-1970s, landscape archi-tect Richard Haag designed a park that cel-ebrated the hulking ruins of the Gas Worksthat had poisoned the site. Using the newscience of bioremediation to clean the soil,Haag transformed one of the city’s worsteyesores into a place of wonder as well as areminder of Seattle’s industrial past.

The reality of bipolar disorderis hard to fathom: nearly six mil-lion Americans have been diag-nosed with the disorder and yet solittle is known about how the ill-ness manifests itself in our brains.

Ride the Tiger seeks to findout where the biological break-downs occur and how we can pos-sibly pre-empt, fix or rewire ourbrains back to recovery.

Scientists and scholars on thecusp of discovery explore questions and connections that are spur-ring four scientific disciplines of mental health research: genetics, the brain, treatment, and basic science.

Ride the Tiger weaves together brave and compelling stories ofhighly accomplished individuals—congressmen, attorneys, pastors, authors, and stay-at-home moms—who have been diagnosed as bi-polar. It introduces viewers to high-profile entrepreneurs who haverisen to the top despite—or perhaps because of—their bipolardisorder and who, while appearing brilliant and successful to thepublic, are often secretly wrestling with a devastating emotionalcost.

    Ride the Tiger will be broadcast on 3-2 Wednesday, the 13that 9:00 p.m., Sunday, the 17th at 10:00 a.m., and Monday, the 18that 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 13th at 8:00 p.m.and Thursday, the 14th at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Alzheimer’s disease strikes atthe core of what makes us human:our capacity to think, to love, and toremember. The disease ravages theminds of over 40 million victimsworldwide, and it is one of the great-est medical mysteries of our time. In “Can Alzheimer’s BeStopped?” on Nova, investigatorsgather clues and attempt to recon-struct the molecular chain of events

that ultimately leads to dementia, and follow key researchers in the fieldwho have helped to develop the leading theories of the disease.

Along the way, individuals from all walks of life reveal what it’slike to struggle with Alzheimer’s. Among them, members of aunique Colombian family who have learned that their genetic pre-disposition all but guarantees early onset Alzheimer’s. Yet theremay be hope.

Nova follows courageous patients participating in clinical trials, and then goes behind the scenes of the major drug trials to see howresearchers target and test therapies that may slow Alzheimer’s andeven prevent it.

“Can Alzheimer’s Be Stopped?” on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednes-day, the 13th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, the 16th at 10:00 p.m., and Sun-day, the 17th at 12:00 midnight. The searing production of “Lulu,”Alban Berg’s tragedy of a sexuallyirresistible woman, airs on GreatPerformances at the Met. One ofthe most important—not to mention notorious—stageworks of the 20th century, “Lulu” is the drama of a youngwoman who sexually and emotionally dominates a widerange of willing victims. Herself a victim of society, sheseems to embody all the frightening aspects of the humancondition, a combination of primal instinct and distinctlymodern amorality.

Berg died before completing Act III of the opera, and“Lulu” was first performed as a fragment in 1937 at theZurich Opera House. Efforts to finish the score based onBerg’s notes were hindered by his widow and only real-ized, after her death, by the Austrian composer FriedrichCerha, in 1977.

The Met’s gifted cast is headed by the charismatic Ger-man soprano Marlis Peterson as Lulu, who has sung thetitle role to great acclaim around the world. SopranoDeborah Voigt hosts the 3-1/2 hour broadcast.

“Lulu” on Great Performances at the Met can beseen on 3-2 Sunday, the 17th at 12:00 noon.

Jackie Robinson, a newtwo-part, four-hour film di-rected by Ken Burns, tells thestory of Jack RooseveltRobinson, who rose fromhumble origins to breakbaseball’s color barrier andwaged a fierce lifelong battlefor first-class citizenship forall African Americans. Born in 1919 to tenant

farmers in rural Georgia and raised in Pasadena, California,Robinson challenged institutional racism long before he integratedMajor League Baseball. As a teenager, he demanded service at aWoolworth’s lunch counter and refused to sit in the segregatedbalcony at a local movie theater. In 1944, while serving as a sec-ond lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Robinson was arrested after hedefied an order from a civilian bus driver to move to the back of amilitary bus. He was found not guilty.

In the spring of 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers General ManagerBranch Rickey signed Robinson to a major league contract. To helpensure the success of their endeavor, and protect the big leagueprospects of future African-American players, Robinson agreed toignore the threats and abuse that Rickey assured him he would face.

That season, Robinson kept his word, remaining silent while hedazzled fans with his brilliant play and helped lead the Dodgers tothe National League pennant. By the end of the year, he finishedsecond only to Bing Crosby as the most popular American.

In 1949, Robinson began to speak out, challenging opposingplayers, arguing with umpires and speaking his mind to the press, and he played some of the best baseball of his career, winning theNational League MVP award. Despite his accomplishments on the

field, his outspokenness drew criticism across the league, from thepress and even from black fans and players. When he retired in1956, many were happy to see him go.

After throwing out the first pitch before game two of the 1972World Series, Robinson told the crowd, and millions watching athome, that it was long past time for Major League Baseball to hireits first black manager. He died nine days later at just 53 years ofage from the ravages of diabetes.

During the early days of base-ball, fans experienced the gamewithout the benefit of an umpire’scolorful hand signals: the defiantfist as the perfect pitch crossedhome plate, the cross-hand sweep as the runner slid into home, andthe dramatic fist pump as the runner, ball, and baseman convergedat first base. The umpire’s voice, usually drowned out by thescreams of thousands of excited fans, served as the only means tosignal a ball or strike or to call a player safe or out.

Signs of the Time explores the origins of baseball’s hand sig-nals and the pioneers responsible for this pivotal innovation. Nar-rated by Richard Dreyfuss, the award-winning documentary featuresfull-scale re-enactments of early games and interviews with histo-rians, retired umpires, and former players.

Signs of the Time airs on 3-2 Tuesday, the 12th at 10:00 p.m.

Filmmaker Ken Burns tellsthe story of Jazz—the quintes-sential American art form. The10-part series follows thegrowth and development ofjazz music from its beginningsto the present. Nine episodescover a period of 45 years, from 1917 to 1961, while thefinal epsiode examines 1961 to2001.

Jazz is born in the unique musical and social cauldron of NewOrleans at the turn of the 20th century. In chronological order, theseries emphasizes innovative composers and musicians and Ameri-can history. Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are central fig-ures, and the contributions of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, MilesDavis, John Coltrane, and countless others are discussed. In the1960s, jazz becomes divided into “schools”—Dixieland, swing, bop, hard bop, cool, modal, free, avant-garde. Rock ‘n’ roll groupsdominate record sales and radio and by the late 1960s, jazz is strug-gling to find its way. But by the mid-80s, jazz begins to bounce back

National Parks: America’s Best Idea is a six-part documen-tary series directed by Ken Burns. It is the story of an idea asuniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just asradical: that the most special places in the nation should be pre-served, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone.

The series begins in 1864 as Congress passes an act that protectsYosemite for “public use, resort and recreation,” the first time inworld history that any government has proposed this idea.

National Parks continues through the 1920s and 30s as theadvent of the automobile allows more people than ever to visit theparks. The final episode makes its way to Alaska, where America’s“Last Frontier” becomes a testing ground for the future of the parkidea.

The six episodes of National Parks: America’s Best Idea willbe broadcast on 3-2 Monday through Saturday, the 25th thru the30th at 8:00 p.m. and on HD3-1 at 7:00 p.m.

“Welcome to Leith” on Independent Lens chronicles the at-tempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notoriouswhite supremacist Craig Cobb. An unsettling exploration of whathappens to democratic principles when they’re pushed to the limit, the film asks: In a free society, how do we deal with people whoseviews we find abhorrent?

Leith, North Dakota, is home to 24 people, mostly farmers andranchers. In 2012, an outsider named Craig Cobb moved in andstarted buying up property. Residents initially welcomed thebearded stranger, figuring he’d moved to be closer to the oil fields, but Cobb had other motives. Posting on racist online forums thathe’d found the perfect place to start an all-white enclave, Cobbimplored other white supremacists to move to Leith and help takeover the town’s government.

But far from the prairies of North Dakota, Ryan Lenz, an inves-tigator from Montgomery, Alabama’s Southern Poverty Law Cen-ter, discovers Cobb’s posts and informs Leith’s mayor, Ryan

Cobb then invitesthe head of the largestneo-Nazi group in theU.S. to stage a townhall meeting, andnearly 300 people show up. Soon after, a family of white suprema-cists from Oregon moves in to start fixing up Cobb’s properties.

As the town struggles to fight against one man’s extremist vision,Cobb and his followers ratchet up the intimidation tactics, disrupt-ing city council meetings with shouts of “Sieg Heil” and postingresidents’ names and home addresses on racist web sites. But whenhe takes to patrolling the streets with a loaded rifle and shotgun, resi-dents decide they have had enough and proceed to take matters intotheir own hands.
