I think those who choose to study abroad not only learn the culture of a new country, but truly learn about themselves.

Please don’t take our word for it…. Let us get you in touch with our alumni (both parents and students). Go to www.asialearn.org/alumnireferral and get connected. There is nothing more reassuring to parents or students than hearing from those who have been down this road and who made the right choice for their study abroad program.

Our first study abroad program, AustraLearn, is one of the older and well-known study abroad programs. Its sister programs of AsiaLearn and EuroLearn also bring a strong reputation to our now worldwide set of programs available to North American students.

We have so many options for students that we are confident we can find the right program for you! You may wish to study and live abroad on a semester or year program, complete an internship to strengthen your resume, attend a short term program during one of your academic break periods, complete a research project at an overseas campus, or earn your entire degree.

We are focused on both your professional and personal development which is why our longer term study abroad programs all offer a Bridging Cultures Program (in-country) to help you adjust and gain the most from your independent experience. We encourage volunteerism in all of our programs and offer our own on-site academic mentors in addition to campus-based tutors where we feel our students need the extra support. Mid-semester excursions, short-term programs and weekend travel ensure you will experience your destination to the fullest. Our end of program workshops and alumni connections help you grow even more from your experience abroad.

With an amazing team of 51 staff worldwide who run and manage all programs and services, we approach our job of sending students abroad with professionalism and enthusiasm. You should feel confident in knowing that we are one of the most trusted sources for international programming for over 1000 North American colleges and universities each year.

We participate in Education Abroad through well-known organizations in the national and international scenes and especially through presence in NAFSA: Association of International Educators, The Forum on Education Abroad, and the Canadian Bureau for International Education. Our International Council of North American advisors provides on-going oversight of our work, and our creation of and support to the Foundation for Asia Pacific Education ensures our students going to the Asia-Pacific region gain financial scholarships for their programs in addition to the scholarships we provide for all of our destinations.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad was ranked 7th out of 100 top women owned organizations in Colorado in 2009, and its Executive Director named one of the top 3 business leaders in the state in 2008.

Asia is an ideal study abroad destination for students wishing for a true cultural learning experience. Students across all majors will find opportunities to fulfill degree requirements on AsiaLearn’s study abroad programs in this exciting part of the world. AsiaLearn’s partner universities offer a wide range of courses instructed in English, so language proficiency is not a requirement for AsiaLearn programs. However enrolling in language classes while studying in Asia is strongly encouraged in order to experience a deeper connection with the local culture.

Asia is home to approximately three fifths of the world’s population and many fascinating societies with strong cultural roots that are distinctly different from those of the West. The contrast of cultures and the treasures of ancient civilizations have always attracted the adventurous and curious, but the recent emergence of Asian economic giants has captured and held the attention of a more diverse crowd from all around the world. The 21st century will likely be defined by the countries of Asia, and our lives will be shaped by their actions and influences. Therefore, it is of critical importance that our future leaders have an understanding and appreciation of Asian cultures, languages, and practices so that they can effectively work together to solve the challenges of tomorrow.

“Since I got to China I have learned things about myself and culture that I never really thought about before. There are things I do not notice in the U.S. because the others around me are behaving in the same way. The culture and way of life in China are so different that it gives me an easy way to notice my own characteristics.”

LanguagePrior language skill is not a requirement for study abroad on AsiaLearn programs; however, cultural learning is at the heart of our program philosophy. Therefore, we strongly encourage students to enroll in language classes during their semester in Asia in order to experience a deeper connection with the people and the country. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced language classes are available in each country, and AsiaLearn recommends that students combine classes in their major with language instruction and Asian studies to establish a well-rounded academic program that maximizes their learning opportunities abroad.

Although English is a common language in many of AsiaLearn’s program destinations, we recognize the need for basic communication in the host language. Therefore, all students will receive survival level language instruction prior to departure to help prepare for successful integration into their host country. Language practice will be a component of the in-country Bridging Cultures Program to ensure students feel comfortable communicating their basic needs through daily interaction with locals.

Guaranteed Housing AsiaLearn provides guaranteed prearranged accommodation at all of our university locations. Residential Halls are the most common and can be a good place to meet local students and learn about campus life, while prearranged off-campus accommodation may allow a more independent lifestyle and view of the local way of life.

Accommodation may be co-ed or single sex. Students may be charged for telephone usage, special events, internet connection and usage, extra nights of accommodation, and other miscellaneous items upon arrival. Student rooms are allocated based upon the date of initial payment and submission of your housing form.

See each program for specific information on the accommodation options at each institution.

Most universities do not offer a meal plan, however, the majority of residence halls offer shared kitchens and/or nearby cafeterias/restaurants for students to use.

In private off-campus accommodation, you will share living space and kitchen facilities with other students and may have a shared or single room, depending on availability. In some cases, there may be additional costs such as utilities, TV rental, phone line, and Internet installation.

Housing deposits are also included in the program fees and are refunded to the students after their program concludes. Staff from the accommodation will inspect the room for any possible damage. Payment for any damages will come out of the student’s housing deposit before it is returned.

While AsiaLearn offers guaranteed pre-arranged housing options, you may choose to locate and lease an apartment near the university on your own. This option is only suggested for those students who have friends or family in the immediate area, and plan to live with them during their time abroad. Locating and signing a short-term lease for an apartment in Asia can otherwise prove to be extremely difficult and is not recommended.

Buddy ProgramTo ensure a smooth transition for studying and living in Asia, AsiaLearn study abroad students have the opportunity to be assigned to a local student with whom they can correspond prior to departure and meet upon arrival to assist with settling into student residence and offer advice and support during the semester.

Volunteer OpportunitiesAsiaLearn students are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities at or near their campus abroad. Service learning is an integral piece of a fully-rounded education and we support students’ efforts to integrate into the local culture through volunteer activities. Students will be provided with information on volunteer opportunities on campus or within the local community during the orientation and preparation process.

Opportunities for Cultural IntegrationDuring your study abroad, AsiaLearn encourages you to get involved in campus activities and the local community. There are various opportunities to more fully immerse into the culture by joining clubs or sporting groups, student associations, and participating in locally arranged cultural excursions in the area. Your AsiaLearn coordinator will connect you with local resources for those wishing to volunteer for community projects through your host university. It is important for you to find the right combination of academic, cultural and leisure activities, to take full advantage of the opportunities for international learning and cultural immersion. In addition, the AsiaLearn program provides you with additional ways to culturally immerse yourself while abroad:

Travel and Excursions: • Your host university might offer student trips and excursions. AsiaLearn in-country support staff can help with ideas and logistics of traveling as well. Language Development:• We encourage the addition of a foreign language within your academic plan. In your host country, you will find plenty of opportunity to practice other languages due to the diverse student body. On-site Resident Coordinators: • Available 24-hours-a-day, our on-site Resident Coordinators are available to help you with any cultural integration interests or concerns.

Student Services

All campus services and facilities normally available to local students will be available to you. Unlike some overseas study programs which group visiting students together in separate courses and accommodations, AsiaLearn enrolls you directly at the host university so that you can fully enjoy the culture. Services of the university include academic assistance, personal counseling, health related aid, religious services, overseas student advising, legal aid, and student government. As a full-time student at the campus, you may become a member of the Student Association that normally coordinates social, academic, sporting, and cultural events for its members. Involvement in various activities may help you to meet and interact with other local students. Sporting activities vary from rugby, cricket, and martial arts to water skiing, rock climbing, and soccer. Dance groups, choir, debate, and theater groups are also active on most campuses or in the local community. You may find that most of your sporting activities are found in the local community and participation is on a casual basis - this means you are welcome to play! AsiaLearn alumni have highly recommended joining student clubs as a means of meeting local students.

In-Country Support ServiceAsiaLearn provides bilingual support staff at each of our study abroad destinations in Asia. Our staff will meet participants upon arrival, conduct the AsiaLearn Bridging Cultures Program, and remain available to them throughout their term abroad to assist with any situation that requires attention and resources beyond the capability of the host institution. The appointed AsiaLearn Resident Coordinator will monitor the progress of participants and develop opportunities for extracurricular cultural excursions and activities if desired.

Academics are #1 with AsiaLearnOur semester/year abroad direct enrollment programs in Asia allow you to take classes applicable to your degree program so that you can continue your academic progress while studying abroad. As an AsiaLearn participant, you will work with your personal coordinator to select classes prior to departure, ensure course pre-approval, and transfer of credits upon your return. No aspect of your academic plan will be overlooked.

Choosing the Best University for YOUSelecting the “best university” at which to study in Asia is about choosing the best option for YOU based on your academic needs, cost, location, and activities outside of the classroom. AsiaLearn is happy to help you with this decision making process! AsiaLearn partners with top quality universities, so your educational experience will be high regardless of the institution you choose, thus other factors should weigh more heavily in your decision making process. A great place to begin searching is on the AsiaLearn website: www.AsiaLearn.org/search or call an advisor today.

Educational DifferencesThe style and delivery of education will likely be different to what students experience at their home university, so it is best that participants go abroad with no expectations or assumptions of similarities between the two institutions. Some classes will likely include a combination of lectures, tutorials (small group sessions), laboratory work, seminars, and recommended self study.

One significant difference that students may notice is the teacher-centered, structured environment where classroom discussion, debate, and questioning are often discouraged. This may come as a surprise to those accustomed to learning in a student-centered environment where class participation and critical thinking are expected and encouraged. Many universities will require a significant amount of independent study with only 1 or 2 exams during the term. It is not uncommon for a large percentage of the grade to be based on the final exam; and your grade may also be assigned in relation to the performance of your peers. Subjects instructed in English will be tailored to an internationally diverse group of students. As a native English speaker, you will have an advantage over peers learning in a second language. As a result, you may find that classes move at a slower pace than you are accustomed.

Academic CalendarUniversities across Asia operate on a variety of academic calendars that often differ from what is customary in the U.S. and Canada. Some of the universities such as, James Cook University Australia, Singapore Campus and Mahidol University, operate on a trimester system. Other universities operate on a semester system where start and end dates may overlap with your home university’s spring term. For example, in Japan, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), has semesters that run from March-August and September-February.

Please take a careful look at the program dates (page 29) to identify the study abroad term(s) that coordinate best with those of your home university.

universiTy of reCord - University of Minnesota, Twin Cities AsiaLearn and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities are pleased to announce a new agreement where the University of Minnesota acts as the School of Record for all AsiaLearn semester and year abroad programs as well as all transcripted summer programs. This partnership will allow UMN to evaluate individual subjects taken at AsiaLearn partner universities overseas and ensure the academic rigor and compatibility with educational standards as defined by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI). Students who attend a university in the U.S. or Canada which requires a transcript from an accredited North American institution in order to transfer credit, can obtain an official transcript from the University of Minnesota for their program abroad through this agreement (additional $350 fee will apply). Students who request a School of Record transcript will be temporarily admitted as non-degree seeking students at the University of Minnesota. The University of Minnesota is solely responsible to evaluate coursework on the host university transcript, determine grade and credit conversions, and issue a University of Minnesota transcript with AsiaLearn coursework listed as resident credit.

Program Selection and Planning

Financial planning for study abroad starts from the moment you dream of going abroad. We are here to assist you in your

financial planning. Whether you need advice on transferring your financial aid, or finding additional scholarships, your AsiaLearn coordinator will help you to budget and plan for your experience.

Payments/Refund PolicyAsiaLearn will provide a copy of the most updated fee sheet and payment schedule for your study abroad program after acceptance. Our refund policy will also be explained with the payment schedule. Within two weeks of acceptance an initial payment, as specified in your MyLearn account, will be due to secure your place in the program. Program fees are required to be paid prior to your program start date unless a guarantee of funds is provided for students with financial aid. If you choose to take advantage of our prearranged housing, you will be billed upon allocation of that housing. AsiaLearn can accept payment by check or Visa/MasterCard. Credit card payments can be made online through your MyLearn account.

Federal Financial Aid/ScholarshipsThe U.S. Department of Education advises that the Perkins Loans, SSIG Grant Program, Pell Grants, FSEOG Grants, Stafford Loans, SLS Loans, PLUS Loans, and Consolidation Loans can be used for study abroad. Your financial aid will continue to funnel through your home institution, so you should meet with your study abroad advisor and/or financial aid office to discuss your options for using financial aid for study abroad. AsiaLearn can provide budget reports and necessary paperwork to ease the transfer of your financial aid to pay for the program. Please check with your study abroad office, financial aid office, or granting organization of the scholarships you currently hold to determine which awards will transfer to your study abroad program. If you are not already qualified to receive financial aid, you can apply at your home institution, and should begin this process as soon as possible.

Budgeting for Study Abroad It is important while you plan for your experience abroad that you consider all of the costs associated with living abroad for an extended period of time. We have created a budget worksheet for you on page 12 to determine the estimated cost for a semester

abroad. While budgeting, be sure to consider all potential sources for scholarships and aid:

Does your home university study abroad office offer •scholarships?Does your department of study offer scholarships for study •abroad?Federal Financial Aid – ask your financial aid office if you •can apply for financial aid or if your aid can be increased for a semester abroadRefer to the AsiaLearn website for other scholarship ideas•

Foundation for Asia Pacific EducationThe Foundation for Asia Pacific Education is a 501C(3) non-profit organization, founded by GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, which provides scholarships for students studying

abroad in the Asian-Pacific region of the world, including Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. Each year, the Foundation awards more than $350,000 in scholarships to help students who may otherwise be unable to have an affordable international experience in the Asia-Pacific region. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad continues to financially support the Foundation. www.asia-pacificfoundation.org

Other Scholarship ResourcesAsiaLearn has compiled a pool of additional scholarship resources for your study abroad program. For more information on these other scholarship sources. Visit our website:www.asialearn.org/scholarships.

You Can’t Afford Not To Go!While a semester / year abroad program may appear more expensive than study at your home university, the truth is that you cannot afford not to go! In today’s job market, employers are looking for global citizens with cross-cultural experience who can contribute to a multi-cultural work environment. Your international education experience is a character and resume-building opportunity that will benefit you long into your future.

Academic Enrollment and Credit TransferMost of our university partners in Asia offer the same degree programs as universities in the U.S. or Canada. This makes it easier for you to take classes that will transfer back to your home university and count as credits towards graduation. The home university has full discretion regarding transfer credit. AsiaLearn requires you to have your home university pre-approve the classes you wish to take while abroad. AsiaLearn can assist with this process and works with all U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. Some subjects may require prerequisites before enrollment is granted. Final enrollments are completed from the approved list of subjects either online or upon arrival at the host university. AsiaLearn cannot guarantee the availability of individual classes or admittance to any subject.

Most U.S. and Canadian institutions will not accept transfer credit unless students obtain the equivalent grade of C or better in their subjects. In some cases, subjects may be evaluated and transferred as Pass/Fail. To find out how courses will be transferred to your academic record, please ask the study abroad or academic advisor at your home university.

Tuition and FeesAs a study abroad participant, you will be required to enroll as a full-time student; typically, this is 4-5 classes. Your semester is equivalent to 12-16 U.S. semester credit hours. About ChinaChina is a country with an ancient history, a brilliant civilization, and beautiful landscapes. China is often touted as having one of the world’s oldest surviving civilization whose people have shared a common culture for more than 5,000 years. Philosophers, emperors, foreign conquerors, political leaders, and civil war have all left their marks on China’s colorful history, but the culture has endured.

As their civilization developed, the people excelled in science and artistic expression. Many examples have survived the test of time and are revered today as national treasures and historical sites. Over 30 sites in China are now World Heritage listed and protected. They include ancient architectural complexes and a number of historical relics, forming an important basis for the study of China’s ancient culture and history.

In recent years, China has emerged from isolation and captured the attention of the world by accomplishing astonishing technical achievements and driving their economy at a dazzling pace. The blending of ancient traditions, technological advancement, economic reform, and government control is creating a new China that is dynamic and cannot be categorized in conventional ways. There is no argument that China will continue to make significant impacts on world affairs, but just how and to what extent is a topic of much debate.

About JapanJapan is an island country separated from the east coast of Asia by the Sea of Japan. It is approximately the size of Montana. Japan’s four main islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano.

Japan has the world’s tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents.

Much of Japan’s history has contributed to its homogeneous society. The Japanese highly value group identity and social harmony, even above individual expression. Confucian and Buddhist influences also contribute to this cultural trend. The people are also said to be remarkably conscientious, meticulous, industrious, honest, and technically-skilled. Since WWII, the population has become increasingly urban, with only 25% of the population still living in the rural mountains and rugged coastlines.

While modern Japan has been heavily influenced by other countries, many traditional elements of the culture can still be experienced in Japan. While studying abroad in Japan, you’ll enjoy the exciting blend of ancient culture and modern society.

About SingaporeSingapore is both a country and a city with 4.5 million people and four official languages: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, and English. Malay is the national language, and English is the language of business. The standard of living in Singapore is among the highest in Asia, with state-of-the-art facilities for education, shopping, sports, and recreation. It has a diverse population of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian, and other ethnic groups. One cannot help but notice how clean and green the country is and how friendly the locals are to visitors. These observations may be attributed to social campaigns like the Courtesy Campaign, Keep Singapore Clean, and Keep Singapore Green.

With no natural resources of its own, Singapore has leveraged its strategic location as a trading hub, adhered to an open market economy, and focused on manufacturing while investing heavily in education. By the 1990s, the country had become one of the world’s most prosperous nations with the highest per capita gross domestic product in Asia outside of Japan. The Port of Singapore is one of the busiest in the world, alongside Hong Kong and Shanghai.

About South KoreaKorea has a 5,000 year history, with the first capital city (named Joseon, meaning Land of the Morning Calm) created in 2333 B.C. For five millennia, Korea has withstood the influences and invasions of neighboring countries and preserved its heritage, language, and ethnic homogeneity. Throughout its history, Korea has excelled in science and technological advances, developing the world’s most scientific alphabet, the world’s first ironclad warship, the first metal typeset book, and the first udometer. Today, Korea is better known for its cutting edge technology. The people of Korea are also great lovers of nature, and in a country so green and mountainous, many Koreans enjoy spending time in the great outdoors.

Due to Korea’s location between the great imperial powers of the Orient, it has been subjected to invasions throughout its history by warring nations of China, Manchuria, and Japan. Despite conflicts and differences with their northern counterparts, South Korea has experienced one of the fastest rates of economic development in the world. In just 40 years, the nation has rebuilt itself from the devastation of war and has become one of the leading economies in Asia, behind Japan and China. South Korea is one of the world’s most technologically and scientifically advanced countries with companies like Samsung and LG serving as global leaders in electronics, digital displays, semiconductor devices, mobile phones, and high-tech gadgets. ProgrAm dATesfreQuenTLy Asked QuesTions

Why should I choose AsiaLearn? We are committed to providing you the very best cultural and academic experience possible at an affordable cost. As a participant in the AsiaLearn program, you will be working with a committed team that has an overwhelming interest in your ability to interact with diverse Asian cultures while studying abroad. Our in-country staff and host institution partners will be there to assist you upon arrival and throughout your study abroad program.

Will the classes be more difficult than I am used to at my home university?North American students find that the education systems of Asia are different from those of their home university. You may find that you are expected to spend far more time studying on your own and/or participating in group work. This means that you will have more responsibility in self study based on your own level of understanding of the material rather than based on set reading instructions from a professor. You will find that you are assessed less on quizzes and periodic exams/papers as much more grading emphasis is placed on one or two major exams. Your academic instructors will not always provide you with the answers but will help you learn ways to find the answers yourself. The material is not more difficult than the subjects taken at your home university, but the style of teaching and your personal responsibility in study habits will require adjustment to best benefit from the education systems of Asia.

Can I use financial aid for this program?Federal financial aid may be used for all AsiaLearn credit bearing programs. Please contact your study abroad advisor and/or your financial aid office to discuss your options for using financial aid for study abroad through your home university. If you are not already qualified to receive financial aid, you must apply through your home university.

When will I hear if I have been accepted into the program?Your complete application will be assessed on the basis of the admission requirements for the universities you have selected. You will be notified of your acceptance by telephone approximately 2 weeks after we receive your completed application materials. If your GPA is lower than the requirement of the university, if you attended a community college, or if you were on academic probation, your application will need to be referred to the host institution for final acceptance.

Do I need a passport and an immigration visa? You will need both a passport and a student immigration visa when you study abroad in Asia. AsiaLearn will facilitate the visa process by providing you with all of the necessary visa forms and instructions, collecting these documents from you (along with your passport) and then sending the visa application to the appropriate consulate.

When is the best time to apply for a program? You will want to apply as early as possible (6 - 8 months prior to the start of your program) and no later than the designated application deadline for the program you plan to attend. All deadlines should be met to best assure that you are accepted to your priority program choice.

How do I receive information on selecting classes/subjects?See the subject chart on page 10 for a general idea of the course areas available at each university. You can view specific classes and course descriptions for each university online at www.asialearn.org/subjects. You should also read the “Academic and Course Information” for each university to best determine equivalent credit values. Once you have been accepted to the AsiaLearn program, you will select your priority course selections and we will provide guidance on how to best obtain pre-approval of your course options from both your home and the host university.

I do not know a faculty member well enough to ask for a recommendation. Can I use a professional or personal reference?AsiaLearn requires an academic reference for the study abroad program since the majority of your success in Asia will depend on your ability to adjust to a different academic system. Please consider meeting with a member of your university faculty on an individual basis with the request that they get to know you and your motivations for study abroad so that an adequate reference can be provided. Professional or personal references can only be submitted as supplemental documents.

What do the program fees include? Our Study Abroad Program Fees include: full time tuition, university administrative fees, membership in the student union (where applicable), the AsiaLearn Bridging Cultures Program, HTH Worldwide International Health Insurance , all pre-departure services including orientation materials, student visa fees, housing placements, personal advising, subject selections, liaison with your home university, credit transfer assistance, financial aid services, 24-hour assistance while abroad, and alumni services/materials upon return. See page 13 for more details. Housing fees are listed separately and may range, depending on your choice and availability.

Additional costs to consider include: airfare, local travel expenses, passport, textbooks, and spending money.

What assistance is provided for traveling to Asia?AsiaLearn has a long standing relationship with STA Travel who offer personalized service and student discounts for international travel. You may request your airline ticket through the AsiaLearn online enrollment system or contact the AsiaLearn designated support staff at STA Travel. AsiaLearn will send you the specific dates of your academic program after your acceptance into the program enabling you to book your flights through STA Travel or your preferred travel agent/resource. Final arrangements and payment for the flights are your responsibility.

University of Hong KongThe University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest tertiary university in Hong Kong and consistently ranks as one of the leading comprehensive universities in Asia. HKU seeks to capitalize on its strengths as an English-medium, comprehensive, and research-

led university. In 2008, the prestigious Times Higher Education Supplement ranked the University of Hong Kong as the 26th best university in the world.

About Hong KongBeing an international financial center with the world’s freest economy, Hong Kong is Asia’s most globally connected city. The central business district makes up one of the world’s most beautiful skylines, and with a closer look, one can see colonial buildings and modern architecture competing for space and attention. Hong Kong is a densely populated city, but with over 60% of the land left undeveloped, it offers a wide range of outlets for recreation, relaxation, and exploration in the great outdoors.

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and is the primary gateway to mainland China. It is situated at the southern coast of mainland China and is within four hours of all major Asian cities and resorts. However, the most touching experience in Japan for me was at a mentally handicapped facility in Ueda City. We played games with the patients, including softball, soccer, and a number of other traditional Japanese games. It was truly a moving and rewarding experience for all of us.”
