Program Update from 4-H/Extension Staff
Hello Crook County 4-H! We hope you are doing well and staying healthy. Dave and Samara and been
working hard to ensure that Crook County 4-H continues to deliver programming in our community
even when we can’t meet in person. We held two successful virtual contests in the last month and were
so glad that many of you took advantage of the opportunity to participate.
As you know, our programming will remain on pause until after June 30th. We are still continuing to
plan for all events after June 30th, including fair. Please try to remain flexible and open minded as we
continue to program and try to pick up where we left off when we can meet in person again.
This newsletter includes updates about record book check in’s and declaring ownership of market
swine, sheep & goats. Be sure to take a look! But first, we wanted to highlight one of our awesome 4-H
members who is working hard to make sure those in her community stay healthy and safe by making
face coverings!
Rilee Dennis has made over 80 face coverings and is still making them! Before she started making the
face coverings, she researched materials and patterns to create the best fitting covering. She has been
making them in sizes for adults and kids and she has had people in our community donate money and
supplies so she can keep making them! So far she has shipped these homemade face coverings to
people in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Way to go Rilee!!

Having trouble with your record book? We will be hosting four workshops to help
4-H’ers and their families tackle record books! These workshops will be held via zoom so you can join from
the comfort of your living room. Each workshop will focus on a different area of your record book. Feel free
to tune in for all four or pick and choose to get help with the sections you need. Everyone will have the
chance to ask questions during the workshop so be sure to write down any that come up as you are work-
ing. Keep an eye on your email, Samara will be sending out the zoom link and call in information. The top-
ics will be:
May 12th: 4-H Story and general organization
May 14th: Advancements & Project Records
May 19th: 4-H Resume
May 27th: Prepare for record book check-ins, Q&A, all sections covered
Record Book Check Ins Due to in person 4-H events being paused until after June 30th, we have received lots of questions about
record book check ins. Record Book Check-Ins will still be held June 8, 10, 16 & 18. Check-ins will take
place virtually and you will be emailed a link to sign up for a date and time (on one of the 4 listed dates)
that works best for you. Things will look slightly different because the 4-H volunteer who is talking with you
about your records will not be able to flip through your book during the check in. However, we still expect
that each of the requirements listed below are met.
Reminder: You must attend at least one record book check in to participate in Crook County Fair.
Requirements for record book check-in:
Section 1 & 2 of 4-H Resume completed for previous year and started for current year
All other section of 4-H Resume must show progression in activities
Section 11 of 4-H Resume completed for previous year
Project records for the current year must be up to date
Advancements must show progression not necessary for record book check in 2020
Previous 4-H year Story and Project Records, including financial summary must be completed and
closed out for the year
If you have questions about record books prior to check-in be sure to attend a record book workshop listed
above, or contact Samara at the Extension Office [email protected] or 541-447-6228.

Attention Swine, Sheep & Goat members
Due to recent events, the 4-H/FFA in-person swine, sheep, and goat weigh in and tagging
scheduled for May 13, 2020, has been cancelled. In lieu of the regular process, 4-H/FFA
members will be required to show proof of ownership of their animal(s), (backups included,
one backup per member, family members may share a backup but both members need to
submit a photo with the animal individually) in the following manner:
● Families will be required to send a photo of the member with their animal, clearly
showing identifying characteristics, colors, markings, existing tag numbers, ear
notches, etc. One photo per animal, so if the member has both a primary animal
and a backup, there will need to be two photos submitted. Please email the
picture (cell phone pictures are fine) to [email protected] .
Please put the member’s name in the subject line.
● These pictures must be received no later than May 13, 2020, no exceptions.
Pictures will be accepted any time up to that date.
● Scrapies tags will be provided for sheep and goat exhibitors by the extension
office if needed. Please call or email the extension office to arrange this.
● No weight will be recorded at this time. This will make it necessary to implement a MINI-
MUM and a MAXIMUM weight at fair for swine, sheep, and goats.
○ SWINE weights 230-300 pounds (this is unchanged)
○ SHEEP weights 105-165 pounds
○ GOAT weights 75-115 pounds
○ Beef are exempt as they have already had their regular weigh-in and
tagging.
If you have any questions about the above outlined process please contact a sale
committee member, Dave ([email protected]) or Samara
([email protected]) as soon as possible.
