Tune in for this all-new series hosted by journalist Celeste Headlee and artist Masud Olufani and featuring New Yorker humorist Andy Borowitz. Retro Report on PBS aims to reveal the story behind the story by providing new insights into how today’s events have been shaped by the past. Monty Python Day
Friday, October 4
This October, the airwaves will be infested with pythons! Not just any pythons, though — WCLV 104.9 is talking about the Monty Python troupe. Yes, the troupe is returning to honor Monty Python Day, the anniversary of that shining moment on October 5, 1969 when Monty Python’s Flying Circus debuted on BBC-TV. Fifty years later, WCLV 104.9 will celebrate with popular sketches sprinkled throughout the day. The humorous festivities will take place on Friday, October 4 since Monty Python Day falls on a Saturday this year.
Democratic Primary and Akron Mayoral Debates
Tuesday, October 15 and Wednesday, October 16
The fourth Democratic Debate comes to Ohio on October 15, and NPR and 90.3 WCPN will broadcast the proceedings live! A start time has yet to be announced. In addition, it may be necessary to add a second evening of debate on October 16. Should that happen, 90.3 WCPN will broadcast the Akron Mayoral Debate between incumbent Dan Horrigan and Republican challenger Josh Sines immediately following on October 16. Otherwise, the Akron Mayoral Debate broadcast will begin at 10pm.

OCTOBERHIGHLIGHTS
HALLOWEEN
Thursday, October 31
Composers have always been drawn to thesinister and the spooky! This Halloween, WCLV 104.9 will be filled with chills and thrills from the dark corners of the classical repertoire. All day, WCLV 104.9 will present a shudder-some banquet of supernatural delights, including “Dance of Death” by Liszt, “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath” by Berlioz, “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saëns and much more to keep listeners looking over their shoulders all day.
MEET THE ANNOUNCER: JOHN SIMNA

Since then, he has contributed to a variety of programs, including the long-running Jazz Comes to WCLV 104.9, Symphony at Seven and Musica Sacra. Simna keeps his performance chops honed as a bass trombonist for Swing City and as the leader of a brass sextet. He also teaches jazz history to new generations at The Music Settlement.
A MONTH OF BIRTHDAYS
WCLV 104.9 is prepared to celebratenumerous birthdays this October. On their designated birthdays, WCLV 104.9 will feature music from composers Paul Dukas (10/1), William Billings (10/7), Camille Saint-Saëns (10/9), Giuseppe Verdi (10/10), Alexander Zemlinsky (10/14), Franz Liszt (10/22) and Johann Strauss Jr. (10/25). Performers get the birthday treatment too, including Yo-Yo Ma (10/7), Rachel Barton Pine (10/11), Gary Graffman (10/14), Marin Alsop (10/16) and Wynton Marsalis (10/18). Be sure to tune in for these significant musical milestones!

Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited draws inspiration from the root meaning of the word “philanthropy”: love of what it means to be human. Comprising the work of author Valaida Fullwood and photographer Charles W. Thomas Jr., the exhibit illuminates the human impulse to show compassion, to progress, to see fairness, to connect with others and to love. The Soul of Philanthropy is an experience where the images glow, the stories enlighten and the desire to give back is set afire. In reframing portraits of philanthropy, the exhibit beckons visitors to embrace and act on the fact that we each have the capacity to give more and wiser.
The Soul of Philanthropy Cleveland: Celebrate Those Who Give Black exhibition is curated to tell the story of Black philanthropy in Cleveland. It will showcase the Black community’s many informal giving pathways, by honoring the past, celebrating the present and inspiring the future.
