2016 was a remarkable year for the nation, our region and ideastream.

In a year filled with major news and events, ideastream indeed provided the high-quality, in-depth and meaningful stories, programs and services you have come to expect.

However, ideastream did much more.

Meeting rising demand for exceptional 24/7 access to news and information, ideastream was able to GO BEYOND by delivering content that framed, profiled, and brought substantial context to stories, programs and services conveying fresh, clear and balanced accounts of the issues and topics at hand. In other words, ideastream engaged us by focusing attention on facts and activities and then placing them within a framework of meaning.

With increased capacity from Campaign for Community investments:

• ideastream created, produced and distributed original documentaries celebrating the centennials of Cleveland Play House and Karamu House that were able to GO BEYOND the heart and soul of these venerable regional theaters

• The new Ideas family of companion programing across radio/TV/web was able to GO BEYOND delivering comprehensive analysis of breaking news on Ideas on WVIZ/PBS, The Sound of Ideas® on 90.3 WCPN and Ideas Now 24/7 on the web, social media and mobile platforms by offering in-depth explorations of critical community issues

• ideastream Education was able to GO BEYOND providing services to parents, early childhood and childcare professionals, students and schools through Early Childhood Symposiums, American Graduate Champion events and First 2000 Days community conversations that presented unparalleled access to expert opinions and observations

• The health team was able to GO BEYOND reporting for Be Well programming by establishing trusting community partnerships with grassroots organizations and large medical institutions across the region to uncover questions and search for answers to critical health issues

• ideastream was able to GO BEYOND spotlighting Northeast Ohio by hosting numerous public events and live-studio productions that aired nationally, such as: a preview screening of PBS Antiques Roadshow episodes that were filmed in Cleveland during summer 2015; two visits from NPR and PBS’ Tavis Smiley to spotlight Cleveland’s work in early childhood education and explore pathways to building trust in our judicial system; showcasing local talent for NPR’s From the Top; a live Facebook conversation for NPR’s Michel Martin’s Going There; and the statewide broadcast of the third and final U.S. Senate debate between Governor Ted Strickland and Senator Rob Portman

Last, ideastream was delighted to GO BEYOND by accommodating NPR reporters and other journalists during the 2016 Republican National Convention in July, who produced many reports at the Idea Center.

On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, please know we are committed to seeing continued success as we enter the final stages of the Campaign for Community. Additionally, we fully anticipate ideastream will continue to create, produce and distribute multiple media public service offerings that will GO BEYOND expectations—far into the future.

Thank you for all that you do to help ideastream strengthen our communities.

PARTNERING IN ARTS EDUCATION

ideastream, in a partnership with Progressive Arts Alliance (PAA), which connects teens to STEM education through arts and technology—via hip hop and rap, DJ-ing and MC-ing with turntables, and graffiti art—created and hosted HAMILTON and Hip Hop in the CLE. A packed theater enjoyed a preview of PBS Arts Fall Festival’s Great Performances’ Hamilton’s America, the highly anticipated documentary about the making of the hit Broadway musical, and performances by PAA’s summer arts campers. Talented teens presented cutting-edge, music routines inspired by the groundbreaking musical.

As part of its centennial celebration, the Cleveland Museum of Art put a spotlight on some of the most famous pieces in its collection. Among them is George Bellows’ 1909 depiction of a rowdy, backroom boxing match called Stag at Sharkey’s. For more than a century, art scholars have praised Bellows’ skill in capturing the raw energy of a no-holds bout. Going beyond the reality of this image, ideastream Senior Arts Reporter David C. Barnett turned to a different set of critics—a trio of boxers. His in-depth story was featured on WVIZ/PBS Ideas and Applause and 90.3 WCPN Sound of Ideas and can be streamed online at: ideastream.org/sharkeys.

DOCUMENTING ARTS HISTORY

America’s Theater: Cleveland Play House is a 30-minute, ideastream-produced special

narrated by Emmy Award-winning actress Marlo Thomas that shines the spotlight on the history-making regional theater. The program features interviews with other CPH alumni—including Cleveland native Academy and Tony Award-winning actor Joel Grey and actor Rich

Sommer from the hit AMC series Mad Men—along with Chicago Tribune Chief Theater Critic Chris Jones. A capacity audience attended a community screening, which was followed by a lively panel discussion moderated by ideastream Senior Arts Reporter David C. Barnett. Thousands watched the premiere and encore broadcasts on WVIZ/PBS.

HOSTING YOUNG MUSICIANS

WCLV 104.9 hosted NPR’s From the Top when it came to Cleveland twice, first to audition teen musicians and then to tape a show before a live-studio audience. As anticipated, the program was

filled with amazing performances and inspiring stories from some of America’s best young classical musicians, including several from our community.

LIVING HISTORY

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Hough Riots, a week-long period of unrest sparked by poverty and racism—a situation experienced by many cities during the 1960s civil rights era—ideastream explored this historic time from multiple angles:

With sponsorship from The City Club of Cleveland, ideastream hosted Ohio Counts:

Race for the U.S. Senate, the third and final debate between U.S. Senate candidates Senator Rob Portman and Governor Ted Strickland. In addition to WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN, debate media partners included WEWS in Cleveland and WCPO in Cincinnati—both EW Scripps stations and ABC affiliates. The debate, aired live and video-streamed without commercials, was broadcast by television and radio stations across the state. In City Club tradition, audience members—composed of community members and supporters of both candidates—asked questions after the formal debate concluded.
