One Way vs. Two Way /Un sendero vs. Dos Senderos

•One-Way Dual Language programs are implemented when there is only one language group available. At PSJA, our One-Way Dual Language programs are composed of Spanish-speaking English Language Learners.

•Two-Way Dual Language programs are implemented when the Non-LEP population is integrated with English Language Learners in a bilingual enrichment setting. There should be a balance of students of each language background, with no less than one third of English-dominant students.

•At PSJA, our Two-Way Dual Language programs are composed of Spanish-speaking English Language Learners and native English and/or English-dominant students.

PSJA ISD currently implements both the One Way and Two Way programs from Pre-K through 2nd grade district-wide with a select group of campuses implementing Pre-K through 5th Grade.

Page 15: Spotlighting Success: Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD’s Dual Language Enrichment Program

• The One Way Dual Language Program will replace the transitional bilingual program by adding an additional grade level each year. The District’s goal is to have full implementation in the elementary schools by the year 2014.
