    PROGRAMME PRE-INTERMEDIATE (second part A.2.2)

    I. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

    English level A.2.1 or sufficient performance on level test.

    II. GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE El Consejo de Europa, mediante la elaboracin del Marco Comn Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas, ha establecido una serie de objetivos comunes que el alumno debe alcanzar en cada una de las etapas de aprendizaje de una lengua. Estas etapas han sido definidas como niveles de competencia de la siguiente forma:

    Usuario bsico Usuario independiente Usuario competente

    Segn los niveles de referencia establecidos en dicho Marco el alumno que se encuentre en el nivel A2 deber alcanzar los siguientes objetivos: Ser capaz de comprender frases y expresiones de uso frecuente relacionadas con

    reas de experiencia que le son especialmente relevantes (informacin bsica sobre s mismo y su familia, compras, lugares de inters, ocupaciones, etc.).

    Saber comunicarse a la hora de llevar a cabo tareas simples y cotidianas que no requieran ms que intercambios sencillos y directos de informacin sobre cuestiones que le son conocidas o habituales.

    Poder describir en trminos sencillos aspectos de su pasado y su entorno, as como cuestiones relacionadas con sus necesidades inmediatas.

    III. CONTENTS

    Straight Forward Pre-Intermediate Students Book is divided into twelve modules. In each module you will find: Grammar - two grammar sections through the unit Vocabulary - together with grammar and pronunciation. Reading and/ or listening - with extended speaking activities Real world (everyday survival language) and / or writing Writing and Functional Language The book also includes a CD- ROM/ Audio CD with exercises, video, grammar reference and playback capability that will be very useful for you. In addition, there is a workbook that contains self-study exercises for every lesson, full answer key, a Reading and Writing Portfolio and a comprehensive list of Can do statements. Additionally, there is also a practice online access, for personal use.

    At the end of each unit students will be able to check the objectives they achieve through their Progress Portfolio that has been created using the Common European Framework of Reference scales.

FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: Phone numbers and phone messages Unit 2: School days GRAMMAR: Past Simple; Used to; Past Continuous. VOCABULARY: Adjectives with prepositions; Education; School facilities READING: Schools in Europe; Web page: an internet discussion group. LISTENING: Three people talk about their school days. HELP WITH LISTENING: Asking for information in a language school. WRITING: Writing a story FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: Asking for information Unit 3: Flatmates GRAMMAR: Countable & uncountable nouns with some, any & no; same many and most; quantifiers. VOCABULARY: House & home; Towns; Places in a town. READING: Scotland: the people; Web page: www.livinginmontreal.com LISTENING: A dialogue between two friends about where they live HELP WITH LISTENING: Asking for directions in Newcastle. WRITING: A description of your town. FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: Directions. Unit 4: Relationships GRAMMAR: Present Simple; Frequency adverbs & phrases. VOCABULARY: Weddings; Relationships verbs. READING: A relationship style quiz; If you ask me. LISTENING: A description of a film (The holiday) HELP WITH LISTENING: Two phone calls: arranging to go out. WRITING: An email to a friend. FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: Telling stories; Invitations and suggestions.

    Unit 5: Tourist trail. GRAMMAR: Future (plans and will) VOCABULARY: Compound nouns; Hotels; Verb patterns; Air travel. READING: The ruins of Machu Pichu; Web page: www.heavenholidays.com LISTENING: A radio programme about the worst hotel in Britain.

    HELP WITH LISTENING: Three dialogues at the airport. WRITING: An email to arrange a trip.

    FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: Requests. Unit 6: Junk food GRAMMAR: Modifiers; Comparatives; Superlatives. VOCABULARY: Food; Adjectives (opposites); Eating out. READING: Eating the Elvis Presley Way; Coffee break; LISTENING: An interview about slow food; HELP WITH LISTENING: Making a restaurant invitation; A dialogue in a restaurant. WRITING: A review of a restaurant.

    FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: Making a reservation in a restaurant. IV. ASSESSMENT AND ATTENDANCE Composition of final grade:

    Task Work*:......30% Oral Participation in class:10% Final Exam (Written: 30%; Oral: 30%):.....60%

    NOTE: THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF BOTH A WRITTEN AND ORAL SECTION. THE ORAL GRADE IS BASED ON A 15-MINUTE ASSESSMENT WITH TWO ENGLISH PROFESSORS. THE

    FIRST PART OF THE ORAL EXAM WILL INVOLVE MATERIAL FROM THE COURSE AND THE SECOND PART WILL BE SPONTANEOUS (I.E. STUDENTS CANNOT STUDY FOR THIS PART AS

    ONLY THEIR CAPACITY TO UNDERSTAND SPOKEN ENGLISH AND IMPROVISE RESPONSES

    WILL BE ASSESSED). IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS BOTH PARTS OF THE FINAL EXAM (WRITTEN AND ORAL). ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY. STUDENTS WILL BE ALLOWED A

    MAXIMUM OF 3 ABSENCES (6 HOURS).

    *TASKS are goal directed activities meant to produce natural communication in real-world situations. They can be both written and oral. Students will be expected to complete at least 4

    tasks along the course.
