Remarkably, more than a century after Ramon y Cajal and Camillo Golgi received the Nobel Prize (1906) for their epochal work on neuroanatomy, we are still not in possession of a complete “blueprint” of any mammalian nervous system. Moreover, the tools needed to actually assign a specific behavioral function to a specific population of neurons in such a circuit diagram have long been lacking. This often made it impossible at the circuit level to fulfill strict criteria of hypothesis testing, as established in other fields of biology, such as infectiology, since the turn of the 20th century. Thanks to new technologies, however, neu-roscience finally appears to be on the cusp of a new era. New imaging modalities promise to provide structural and functional vistas of the brain that are – on the one hand – suffi-ciently resolved to actually reveal synaptic connectivity, and – on the other hand – comprise the vast expanses of tissue across which neuronal projections span. This, combined with tailored optical and genetic manipulations of well-defined neuronal cell populations, will conceivably provide us with a first comprehensive “parts list” and an actual wiring diagram of mammalian nervous systems, in which we can define functional cellular modules that relate to simple behaviors. While this by no means will conclude neuroscience’s quest for a deep understanding of higher brain function and neuropsychiatric disorders, it will open up a new frontier, which in retrospect might mark our science’s transition from infancy to maturity.

To this exciting current state of neuroscience, fellows and awardees of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation have made numerous seminal contributions and currently spearhead the ongoing efforts to unify functional and structural analysis approaches. This sympo-sium on “Frontiers in Neuroscience: Multi-Scale Analysis of the Nervous System – From Molecules to Circuits” will serve to highlight these contributions and discuss future de-velopments. Moreover, we will invite a broad range of early career scientists to share their ongoing contributions to the field of neuroscience and discuss the state of the field from the viewpoint of those who will shape it in the years to come. Together we want to celebrate the past and future contribution of scientific exchange across borders in propelling forward the frontiers of neuroscience.
