Alcon’s mission is to discover new ways to enhance sight and improve people’s lives, and we have done this successfully for 70 years. Our products touch the lives of millions of people each year living with conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, and refractive errors. We offer the most complete line of ophthalmic surgical devices, as well as a differentiated contact lens and lens care portfolio to help patients see, look and feel their best.

We have firsthand experience working in developing markets where loss of sight means loss of productivity, loss of community connection. We know that by reducing the number of blind individuals to 24 million people globally by 2020, the economic gain could be $102 billion.1

Reimagining eye care means to us that we are at the forefront of innovation, partnering with eye care professionals to bring the gift of sight to more people around the world.

Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre8th – 10th November 2016 | Singapore

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

These are exciting but challenging times for our industry in Asia Pacific. Demand for quality healthcare in the region continues to soar and outstrip supply – driven by an ageing population, a rapidly growing middle class and the rise of chronic, non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease.

Advances in medical devices, equipment and in vitro diagnostics play an important role in addressing these challenges. But technology alone is not sufficient. All stakeholders in our ecosystem need to work together, sometimes in new creative ways, to bring new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease to all patient groups.

Following the success of last year’s MedTech Forum, the Asia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed) is delighted to welcome you to the Asia Pacific MedTech Forum 2016 at Suntec City Convention Centre on 8-10 November.

We will bring together senior industry leaders, clinicians, patients, hospital CEO’s, government policy makers, payers and other stakeholders from around the globe, all looking to transform the healthcare sector and raise standards of care across Asia Pacific. The Forum provides exceptional opportunities to network, share best practices, and discuss and advance cutting edge initiatives.

This is without a doubt the medical technology industry’s most impactful gathering of people and ideas in the region.

Please join us at the Asia Pacific MedTech Forum 2016, to create new partnerships in healthcare!Yours Sincerely,

Fredrik NybergChief Executive OfficerAsia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed)

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Public Private Partnerships Case Studies – Can the MedTech Industry Do More?

Public-private partnerships in health combine the knowledge and resources of different organizations in innovative ways to help participants achieve goals more efficiently or achieve goals that may not be attainable working individually. Advantages of engaging in partnerships to achieve goals include: leveraging resources to achieve goals more ef-ficiently; maximizing the relative strengths of each partner and filling gaps in expertise; reducing risks for each partner; accelerating the time for results; and piloting or demon-strating new ideas on a small scale to evaluate their potential benefit on a larger scale.

There is no one model for public-private partnerships, and they can be tailored according to the goals of the parties involved. This panel will discuss case studies of different partner-ships and explore areas for increased collaboration.

Plenary #4: Lancet Commission on Global Surgery – Panel Update on the “Global Surgery 2030” Report

From Lancet Commission to National Surgical Planning and Implementation – Where are we as a global community at providing care to the 5 billion people who lack access to surgery and anesthesia care when needed? What is the role of the MedTech industry in solving this global challenge?

In April of 2015, the Lancet released a special report, “Global Surgery 2030: evidence and solutions for achieving health, welfare, and economic development” which was the culmination of over two years of work, involving representatives from all sectors with an interest in surgery and public health from over 110 countries (http://www.thelancet.com/commissions/global-surgery). The report makes a compelling case that lack of access to surgery and anesthesia care is the single largest global public health challenge, greater than all communicable and non-communicable diseases. With 32% of the global burden of disease addressable through surgery and only 6% of the Low-Middle Income Country population having reliable access this is a global imperative. Since the Lancet report, awareness and action globally has accelerated with passage of WHA 68.15 (http://www.who.int/surgery/wha-eb/en/), statements by the World Bank, significant coverage in the scientific and lay literature.

This session aims to detail the progress of the multifaceted work to address this challenge to date and discuss the critical role that a united MedTech industry can actively play. Global insights and case studies will be presented in concert with a focus on the needs, solutions and ongoing work in Asia Pacific.

Access breakout: “Global Surgery 2030” – The Role of the MedTech Industry in Solving this Challenge.

The lack of access to surgical healthcare and anesthesia care is the single largest global public health challenge, greater than all communicable ad non-communicable diseases. Following the plenary session on Global Surgery 2030, this breakout session attempts to create a dialog around the medical technology industry’s critical role and what can be done to address this global challenge.

Innovation breakout: The Era of HealthTech - Harnessing its Potential to Fundamentally Impact Standards of Care in Asia.

Healthcare in Asia comes in two flavours. Developed economies face the same woes as other developed economies across the world as they strive to address their ageing populations with chronic diseases at an affordable cost. Developing economies are grap-pling with solving significant health challenges in large populations with immature health systems.

Healthcare has reached an inflexion point where tech’s Moore’s Law is revolutionising the entire value chain. This represents a unique opportunity for Asia to leapfrog itself to signifi-cantly improve the standard care. However, healthcare is complex and many challenges need to be overcome.

In this panel, we will explore the healthtech innovation ecosystem in Asia and reflect on what is going well, what could be done differently and what still needs to be done to suc-ceed.

Collaboration breakout: Legal Compliance Developments – How the Industry-HCP Relationship is Changing.

Collaborative interactions between industry and health care providers (HCP’s) are essential to advancing medical technology and ensuring the safe and effective use of the manufacturers’ products and services. Most major industry associations, including APACMed, are committed to ensuring that these interactions meet the highest ethical standards, preserve HCPs’ independent decision-making, and reinforce public confidence in the integrity of patient care, treatment, and product and service selection.

Codes of Ethics in the medical technology sector have evolved significantly over the last 10 years. Yet the compliance environment remains challenging in many parts of Asia Pacific. In addition, industry business models are changing in response to new government payment and procurement policies. This panel will examine implications of the latest developments in business ethics and global compliance, evolving government procurement and payment policies and incentives, and new business models on the Industry HCP relationship, and how to address specific local commercial challenges.

Plenary #5a: PATIENT STORY - Impact of Innovation

There is no doubt that technology is shifting how physicians and patients communicate with one another. As patients have access to more information at their fingertips, they are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and involved with their healthcare decisions.

This session explores the considerations faced when making life-saving decisions around medical technology innovations through a compelling dialogue between a renowned interventional cardiologist and his patient.

Plenary #5b: Consensus Statement on the Future of Medical Device Registries Across Asia-Pacific and Middle East-North Africa

Registries are a mechanism to collect information about patient populations being treated, the provider’s quality and processes of care, device performance, and the clinical outcomes achieved. If designed and executed properly, a registry can provide useful information about the safety and effectiveness of medical interventions.

Market-specific, readily verifiable, credible data elements acquired from medical device registries are being increasingly utilized by governments across Asia-Pacific in informing regulatory approval, reimbursement, and coverage decisions.

APACMed support principles of evidence-based healthcare. This session will introduce a new APACMed position paper to be published shortly: “Consensus Statement on the Future of Medical Device Registries Across Asia-Pacific & Middle East-North Africa”

Plenary #6: Engaging Through Change - Leadership through Organizational Disruption in MedTech.

In recent years, the Medical technology industry has been experiencing major changes, including numerous merger & acquisitions, corporate restructuring, or a period of slower growth for some segments.

These could all be a response to the disruptive power of digitization, the complexity of globalization, and increasing regulatory pressure. It can also be the constant change that’s part of simply staying afloat in today’s dynamic business environment – let alone ahead. None of this is going away anytime soon.

In this panel session, our Senior Client Partner from Korn Ferry, Gladdy He, will be moderating the discussion with seasoned Medical Technology leaders to share their practical advice and real-life experiences of engaging through change.

Gladdy will also provide the latest Korn Ferry research and related case studies. The outcome, hopefully, could be your guide to driving, managing and measuring change.

Plenary #7a: Creating Access to Safe Surgery through Innovative Partnerships

After nearly 35 years of providing safe, well-timed, and effective surgery, Operation Smile has developed the expertise to become a leader in global surgery. In 2015, the United Nations approved the Sustainable Development Goals, paving the way for safe surgery to be addressed at a global level. Operation Smile is poised to begin implementing safe surgical platforms through the use of innovative public and private partnerships around the world, paving the way for Ministries of Health, NGO’s and corporations to begin taking actionable steps to alleviate the burden that exists for the billions of people who lack access to surgical care.

William P. Magee, Jr., D.D.S, M.D, CEO and Co-Founder of Operation Smile, will discuss the many approaches and innovative partnerships needed to create access to safe surgery around the world.

Plenary #7b: Medical Education & Capacity Building in Asia – What can Industry Do to Accelerate Change?

The 2015 McKinsey study “MedTech in Asia” identified physician education and regulatory capacity building as key opportunities for multi-stakeholder collaboration. This session will examine both of these important topics.

The regional shortage of trained healthcare professionals, particularly physicians, has been identified as a significant obstacle to serving larger numbers of patients, especially in emerging markets. The panel will discuss possible collaborative efforts to address this shortage and how technology can be used to transform medical education.

Regulating medical technology is a relatively new mandate for many governments in the region and recruiting regulators with appropriate skills has been challenging. Beyond capacity, Asia-Pacific regulators often struggle to stay abreast of rapid advances in medical technology. In many markets, the responsibility for approving medical devices has fallen on agencies that traditionally have overseen the pharmaceutical industry.

The panel will examine how regulators, academics, healthcare providers, industry executives and trade associations can better collaborate to build regulatory capacity and to accelerate and enhance medical education in Asia Pacific.

Access breakout: Does Universal Health Care (UHC) Improve Access to Medical Technology?

Governments’ efforts to deliver universal healthcare (UHC) have brought many changes to the healthcare landscape. Understanding how UHC affect access to medical technology becomes increasingly critical to win in this evolving market.

The goal of this panel is to understand the UHC situation in three representative markets, China, Indonesia, and Philippines, jointly discuss the outlook of UHC, and derive implications for medical technology, including:

• UHC development roadmap and current stage • How UHC reform has changed the breadth and depth of the coverage of medical

products• Achievements and ongoing challenges in UHC implementation• Discussion with panelist to get local perspectives on UHC outlook, how UHC affects

access, implication to MedTech, and what companies can do to further expand and shape UHC

Innovation breakout: Developing Market-Appropriate Products for Emerging Economies.

To move beyond the premium segment and reach a broader group of patients and healthcare providers, MedTech companies need to develop market-appropriate products and services rooted in innovation that appeal to customers seeking different value propositions. Instead of importing de-featured devices that were successful in Europe and North America, companies are beginning to localize R&D to access a broader segment that seeks better value for money, whether through lower prices, products and services tailored to specific needs, or both.

This panel will examine specific design considerations and provide case examples of how companies have successfully reached underserved patients in the region. Opportunities in personalized medicine and genetic diagnostics will also be addressed.

Collaboration breakout: The Evolving Role of Medi-cal Affairs in the Medical Technology Industry.

While medical affairs is a well-established function within the pharmaceutical industry, it is relatively new to the medical technology industry. This breakout creates a conversation around how and why the role of medical affairs has evolved to play such a central role in pharmaceuticals and what key learnings and lessons can be applied to medical technology.

• Training of nurses, engineers, technicians, and community eye health workers• Standardized and measured surgeon training with long-term clinical and partnership

development in an expanding hospital network

Plenary #9: Looking ahead: Working Together to Raise Standards of Care in Asia Pacific.

The goal of this panel is to discuss what industry can do to raise the standard of care in Asia Pacific. The panelists of Asia Pacific MedTech leaders will first reflect on the current environment, including the opportunities and challenges, then examine and discuss in depth the top five priority areas that needs to be addressed in order to improve the quality of care in Asia Pacific:

• Regulatory advocacy: how can industry work together to have a greater impact on the regulatory agencies?

• Physician education: How can the current training infrastructure be expanded to train more doctors, while also upgrading their capabilities?

• Connecting with gov’t policy makers on access and quality: how can industry leaders and policy-makers better work together to address access and quality of care?

• Driving innovation: How can APAC be turned into a hotbed for innovation, including value segment product, innovative delivery model, and tailored solution?

• Promoting market access to technologies: how will the compliance environment likely to evolve, and what are the priorities for our industry going forward?
