After starting out with the Diploma in Textiles programme in 1957, the Institute now offers a wide range of academic programmes covering disciplines including fashion and textile design, fashion technology, fashion retailing, fashion and textile marketing and merchandising, intimate apparel and knitwear design with technology. These programmes are offered at levels ranging from higher diploma to doctoral degrees and in full-time and part-time learning modes.

ITC has a team of excellent staff members who distinguish themselves in high quality teaching and research in the areas of design, business and technology. Students are taught in an integrated and multidisciplinary manner, with an emphasis on both theory and practice. Besides, students are successfully developed as all-round graduates who have a global outlook, a high sense of social responsibility, critical and creative thinking abilities. They are highly regarded by local industries and have been a formidable force behind the economic success of the Hong Kong fashion and textile industries.

The Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC) has a proud and illustrious history. It has pioneered the provision of fashion and textiles education in Hong Kong and is recognized as one of the region’s first class educational institutions, with a vision of a centre of excellence in fashion and textile research and education.

ITC has teaching laboratories and studios such as Spinning Laboratory, Weaving Laboratory, Knitting Laboratory, Dyeing & Finishing Laboratory, Garment Laboratory, Physical Testing Laboratory, Fashion Design Studio, etc., research laboratories such as Material Synthesis & Processing Laboratory, Plasma Treatment Laboratory, Laser Treatment Laboratory, Fibre Optics Laboratory, Analytical Laboratory etc., and special centres such as Fashion and Textiles Resource Centre, Nanotechnology Centre and Shape Memory Textiles Centre.

These well equipped facilities foster the development of ITC as a force in visionary research and in the pedagogy of higher education in fashion and textiles.

Student Exchange Programme

The Student Exchange Programme has been very successful in enhancing the all-round development of students, particularly in the areas of global outlook, language skills, social and national responsibility and cultural appreciation. Partnership has been established with universities all over the world, such as Australia, Germany, Finland, Japan, Sweden, UK and USA.

Nominated students will be attached to our partner universities in the form of credit-earning study for one semester. Sponsorships are available to cover the expenses partially.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE) Programme

The WIE Programme enhances the development of all-round students with professional competence. It provides an excellent opportunity to our students to gain real life working experience and develop generic abilities.

Placement/Internship in clothing companies, fashion retailers and manufacturers are arranged locally and globally. Students can enrich their knowledge and have hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations of the fashion and textiles industry.

Fashion Shows

ITC organises Fashion Shows for our graduating students to manifest their talent to the public in May, June and July every year. “Catwalk” is the showcase for designers to portray the fashion stories they create. Having one’s design on stage is a valuable and fulfilling experience especially for young design talents.

Career Development

We arrange a number of garment and textiles companies, fashion retailers and manufacturers to present recruitment talks to our final year students in April and May every year. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to extend their network to the industry and get prepared for their career development in fashion and textiles business.

Academic And Student activities

At ITC, students are provided with plenty opportunities of co-curricular events and off-campus activities. Students can involve in a variety of interest groups, students association and committees and participate in the overseas exchange programme and cross-border industry visits.

ITC provides a great platform to students to acquire knowledge about the advance technology in the clothing industry and to enjoy a fruitful university life. In addition to lectures, the professors offer practical lessons that aroused my interest in fashion and textiles. The strong connection between ITC and the clothing industry provides students with a bridge to access the fashion world. The world-class and cutting edge research conducted in ITC gives valuable contributions to improve human life. ITC allows students to cultivate an aspiration, initiative and confidence towards new knowledge through pursuing life-long learning. In the three delightful and fabulous years at ITC, I have become more mature and have started having some deep thoughts about life. ITC had equipped me with solid knowledge and essential skills to become an expert in fashion retailing.

Teachers always give us professional advice and stimulate us to explore our talent and creativity. It is my honour to be a student of ITC. I believe that I am now ready for all the new challenges; and I am prepared to be the fashion retailing expert and to contribute to the fashion industry.

WONG Yu Ming, PhoebeBA(Hons) Scheme in Fashion & Textiles, 2008Specialism: Knitwear Design with Technology

ITC provided me with training to become a professional fashion designer. In the final year of my degree study, I took knitwear design as my major. The programme equipped me with professional knowledge about knitwear design. Now, becoming a knitwear fashion designer is my goal. In addition, the learning experience outside the classroom, such as the exhibition visit in Shanghai, the factories visits in both Hong Kong and Mainland China and cooperation with the factory strengthened my knowledge in fashion design. I am so proud of having studied in ITC.

Programme Characteristics

Upon completion of the programme, students should have mastered a broad range of appropriate critical thinking and creative awareness skills that will allow them to:

Develop and enhance individual design and creativity in the context of fashion and textile design

Develop an appropriate set of professional design skills and related research methodology required in tackling and proposing solutions to contemporary industry issues

Acquire an international perspective regarding design strategy and business issues in its professional context

Continuous utilise and update the understanding and awareness of current and new developments in relevant technologies, and practice in an integrated design context

Apply a sense of autonomy and related skills in self-appraisal to professional design practice

Communicate effectively in its professional context in verbal, written and visual formats

Programme Aims

To train designers with an in-depth understanding of global fashion trends and requirements, with an emphasis on design conceptualization, independent research, creative application and artistic expression

By providing a design-focused environment that allows students to map out their own personal routes, the programme seeks to foster a range of design-oriented, decision-making skills that are required in the real world of fashion

Programme Structure

The programme syllabus comprises three main elements including a collection derived from students’ individual projects. All students must present their work regularly during the programme to groups of peers, staff, and whenever possible, invited industry experts, who will jointly evaluate personal projects and deliver feedback. Presentations will normally be required at regular intervals and may comprise a variety of different methods according to the specialisation concerned, each of which is appropriate for the student’s individual study programme. The presentation may consist of research work, a report, or creative work, and will be delivered in a static or dynamic environment. Such presentations will normally be limited in duration to no more than 15 minutes, and are aimed at developing presentation, language, and communication skills in both team-based and individual levels.

Programme Characteristics (Continued)

Students who take the MA in Fashion and Textile Design programme will develop a range of core skills throughout the first semester which will underpin their existing design and industry knowledge and build on that knowledge further. This intensive initial period of study will prepare students for the second semester. At that stage, together with a grasp of the fashion business, each student should be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the clothing and textiles business, and be familiar with the demands placed on designers in what is a dynamic industry.

Entrance Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in textiles or fashion design, or the equivalent.

For applicants who are not native English speakers and whose first degree qualifications are not obtained through the English medium, they are required to obtain one of the following to ensure that our admittees have reached an expected English language standard:

A TOEFL score of total 80 or above for the Internet-based tests, OR a TOEFL score of 550 or above for the paper-based tests; OR

An overall Band score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Notes:

Individual cases will be considered on their own merit by the department. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.

Fashion Merchandising Specialism

To provide students with integrated knowledge and practice concepts, they need to meet the demands of fashion merchandising careers in the manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and international trade sectors

Global Fashion Management Specialism

To develop an entrepreneurial perspective on today's global fashion business environment

To develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which the worldwide cultural convergence impacts on today's globalizing business context

The GFM specialism is in collaboration with the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York (http://www.fitnyc.edu) and the Institut Français de la Mode in Paris (http://www.ifm-paris.com). Students who take this specialism are required to visit New York, Paris and Hong Kong (for intensive seminars and site visits 2 weeks in each city) during the course of study.

To enable students to assimilate and integrate knowledge in business and management disciplines from globalizing perspectives

To further develop and enhance students' intellectual ability to tackle operation problems in worldwide fashion and textiles supply and distribution business

To nurture students' potential and enthusiasm as active learners for their personal and profession development

Programme Structure

This programme is a taught graduate business degree, nurturing cosmopolitan executives and entrepreneurs in the converging worldwide fashion business.

The programme is structured as mixed mode (both full-time and part-time) that offers 30 credits in two focused specialisms, Fashion Merchandising (FM) and Global Fashion Management (GFM). Student can determine his or her own study timeframe.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

To introduce the fundamental principles and practical knowledge on both technological and business aspects of the fashion industry

Fashion Retailing

To introduce the up-to-date strategic and operational knowledge related to the fashion retailing business

To emphasize on fashion buying, store management and distribution of fashion products in the international arena

To train up students with managerial, analytical and problem-solving skills relevant to the retail business

Intimate Apparel

To introduce the latest lingerie fashion design and technology in an active classroom

To help students to gain a better understanding of textile, design, pattern, production and the business environment in real life

Knitwear Design & Technology

To train students to become competent in the highly specialised knitwear design profession

Design is the main stream in this specialism. The technological element of this specialism distinguishes knitwear designers from fashion designers

There are also opportunities for industry placements that allow students to gain on-the-job knowledge and experience in the workplace

Entrance Requirements

For Entry With HKDSE Qualifications

The minimum entrance requirements to the Scheme are in line with the general entrance requirements of the University, which are as follows:

Level 3 in English Language and Chinese Language; and

Level 2 in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and one Elective subject

Alternative Entry Route

Diploma in the relevant fields of study (e.g., fashion, textiles, design, or merchandising), from PolyU, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (HKIVE), or the equivalent, either with Credit or Pass at Merit Level in at least three Level III subjects.

Professional Recognition

Different awards are offered based on the fields of study selected. Graduates are expected to acquire a broad perspective on fashion and textiles and gain a deeper understanding in the areas of their respective awards.

For Entry With HKDSE Qualifications

Level 2 in five subjects including English Language and Chinese Language

Alternative Entry Route

Diploma, Higher Certificate, Higher Diploma in the relevant fields of study, e.g. textile, clothing or design studies major in fashion design, from PolyU or the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (HKIVE) or the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA) or any higher education institution; or

Advanced Diploma in the relevant field of study from the Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel (HKITA); or

Other equivalent qualifications in the relevant fields of study.

Professional Recognition

Graduates with 2 years of relevant post-qualification experience can apply for Licentiateship of the Textile Institute in the UK (LTI).

Graduate with 5 years of textile and apparel or related working experience can apply for Licentiateship of the Hong Kong Institution of Textile and Apparel (LHKITA).
