Words of Welcome to our Dutch Partners

Dear students,

on behalf of our headmaster Mr. Rink we wish you welcome to Grashof

Gymnasium in Essen. We hope your stay will be enjoyable with your

German hosts.

Students, parents and teachers alike are proud to welcome our Dutch

guests from Pius X-College.

Essen is located in the Ruhr Area which used to be the industrial heartland

in Germany. It is now six years ago we proudly called Essen the Cultural

Capital of Europe. Our city is a very busy one (580,000 inhabitants)

undergoing restructuring since the end of heavy industry which many

associate with our region.

Essen is a city of contrasts as you will find out in the next four days. The

heavy industry was not located in the well-to-do and green south of Essen

(where our school is) but in the city centre about four kilometres from

here. There is no city in Germany where the divide between rich and poor

is as big as here, even if you may not notice. All but a very few mines in

the Ruhr Area are closed now and you’ll see how green our part of town is.

We believe the Ruhr Area to be a very interesting topic. Zeche Zollverein

is sure the landmark sight which we will visit on Thursday.

It is now 9 years we have had an exchange with Pius X-College and for

the first time we are able to visit on ostrich farm. You're going to see how

scenic and green the area is in contrast to the densely populated parts of

Essen further north.

One of the students' favourite places is definitely the Seaside Beach Club

where we're going to have our traditional barbecue on Thursday.

We expect you have been looking forward to this exchange given the

successful experience back in January. It goes without saying that you are

required to speak English as much as possible because another objective

Page 3: Programme INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ... - Grashof …€¦ · 2 Words of Welcome to our Dutch Partners Dear students, on behalf of our headmaster Mr. Rink we wish you welcome to Grashof

3

of the exchange is to use this language both in a learning environment

and outside school.

Having seen how well Dutch and German students got along, we’d love to

see you taking an active interest in each other once again. We also expect

our German students to take care of our Dutch friends at all times.

As always we have tried to make the workshops as interesting and diverse

as possible.

However, you are also invited to look around and see how things are done

here. The teachers /workshop leaders are here to assist you if you have

any questions or problems. Teachers and students alike are happy to help

you.

We believe that taking part in the exchange is a privilege. This is why we

expect the exchange to be successful.

Have a great time!

Wednesday, 11th May 2016 - Workshops and Margarethenhöhe

The beautiful houses in Margarethenhöhe - built by the Krupps for the elite workers at the beginning of the 20th century. Enjoying a great

standard of living, this highly-skilled workforce was expected to be loyal to their employer.

After the workshop we are going to pay a visit to a special part of our

town, Margarethenhöhe.

Some of the German students might actually live there, these might want

to show you around and give you a personal tour.

We are going there by bus or by bike, or walk as well. The spot where we

meet is on the corner of Sommerburgstraße and Steile Straße where most

guided tours start. Be there by 12.30.

You will have 1.5 hours to complete the quiz before we meet again at 2pm

in the spot we met earlier.

You are going to have a break now before we all of us meet again in

Schillerwiese at 4.30. Do not forget to bring your sports gear (as well as

your bats, badminton rackets, frisbees etc.). Schillerwiese is in

Eichenstraße close to the huge roundabout in Stadtwald.

Essen - Then and now (Wednesday, 8.15-11.35)

It is the intention of this workshop to give the students a general overview

of the industrial development of the Ruhr Area and its structural change.

I have a real gem which I just discovered a short while ago. The New York

Board of Education made a film of Essen after WWII. Having watched the

film, you are going to talk about your observations and compare them to

your impressions of the first day. Hence the task to take photographs and

see what our part of Essen is like.

Among other things I'd like you to find out about living and working

conditions in the past, about mass migration to Germany after the war

and some other structural changes of the Ruhr Area in the past. You are

going to work with your partner while the teachers will assist you if need

be.

Thursday, 12th May 2016 Visit Zeche Zollverein

Excursion to Word Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein on Thursday - The royal

Dutch family on their visit to Zeche Zollverein in 2011 - King Willem-

Alexander was crowned in 2013.

11

In the morning

We are going to meet at the tram stop Frankenstraße at 8.40 am. The first

group of students (about 50) will take the 8.55 train to Zeche Zollverein

via Essen main station (Hbf), the rest will follow 10 minutes later arriving

at Zeche Zollverein at 9.32am. The journey is 25 minutes and we need to

change trains at Essen main station before we get off at Zeche Zollverein,

from there it is a short walk to the former coking plant.

Make sure you have a valid ticket for the journey to the museum and

back before we leave. Please do not wait to buy a ticket just before

leaving unless you arrive at the stop in time. After the tours and your

individual exploration of the site you'll be free for the rest of the day, well,

that is until we meet at the Seaside Beach for the barbecue.

The tours last about 120 minutes.

Note that the official programme ends in Zollverein once we debriefed you

and said goodbye at around 1.30 or 2pm.

For more information about public transportation in Essen go to:

12

In the early evening - Seaside Beach

Barbecue: 5.30 until 8pm. Bring your own meat/food/plates and

crockery. Sausages, however, are provided for everyone. We aren't

going to able to bring our own drinks but will need to buy them there.

Please note that if you come earlier, you'll have to pay for the admission.

So wait for the teachers as we are going to cover the admission as well as

the drinks. We meet at the entrance at 5.30 pm. If dry, you can do a lot of

hanging around or sports, too.

Those daring or sporty might want to

give a shot at climbing. On the very

site of the Seaside Beach you could

team up and have a fantastic

experience. I'll give you the URL so

can you check out their webiste.

Don't forget you'll need a

permission/consent from you parents. Although the climbing won't cost

you an arm and a leg (I hope), still expect €13,50 per person. If there is a

group of 20, you'll get a small discount and the admission will be €11,50.

Friday, 13 May 2016

We will meet at the ostrich farm - Straußenfarm Rutherhof at 8.30 am.

You can either carpool or find

out what bus will take to the

farm fastest. It is a 20 minute

walk from the bus stop to the

farm!

The tours will be in English and probably last an hour. Don't forget to bring a sandwhich. Otherwise you might want to buy something at the

farm.

Afterwards we are going to walk to Werden, a truly picturesque part of

Essen. From there we are going to head back to school at around 12.30. Lunch or other snacks will be waiting for the Dutch students and for those

German students who ordered the pizza.

You can leave your luggage in the pavilion in the pavilion

in room 1 before you set off for the ostrich farm/Rutherhof in the morning. Mrs Rasmus will be

waiting for you between 8.00-8.15am. Be on time!

If your host family or friends can bring your luggage to the school in the afternoon just before departure

(3pm), that's fine as well.

A quick summary of the day - Friday, 13th May 2016

9-10/11am: Rutherhof - ostrich farm

10/11-12.30: Essen-Werden

01.00-02.30: Lunch break at school – Don’t forget the luggage.

Grashof meets College Pius X 2015

Gewinn betrachten. Für Ihre Gastfreundschaft und

kräftige Unterstützung danken wir im Voraus. Ohne diesen großen Rückhalt der Eltern wäre der Austausch

nicht möglich.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

E. Memedoski, H. Rasmus

Kontakt: [email protected], [email protected]

Page 15: Programme INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ... - Grashof …€¦ · 2 Words of Welcome to our Dutch Partners Dear students, on behalf of our headmaster Mr. Rink we wish you welcome to Grashof

15

Eltern ganz herzlich einladen. Treffen ist im Seaside Beach am

Baldeneysee.

Page 16: Programme INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ... - Grashof …€¦ · 2 Words of Welcome to our Dutch Partners Dear students, on behalf of our headmaster Mr. Rink we wish you welcome to Grashof

16

Am Mittwochmittag (Margarethenhöhe) bzw. Freitagvormittag

geplanten Aktivitäten in Essen.

gegen 14.30h dort wieder abholen.

Vielen Dank für Ihr Engagement!
