Talk to your health care professional or contact the National MS Society (NMSS) at 800.344.4867 or www.nationalMSsociety.org to learn about ways to help manage MS and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Information provided by the NMSS is based upon professional advice, published experience and expert opinion. Information provided in response to questions does not constitute therapeutic recommendations or prescriptions. The NMSS recommends that all questions and information be discussed with a personal physician. The NMSS does not endorse products, services or manufacturers. Every member in the family lives with MS when a loved one is diagnosed. It can be really hard for family members to understand MS and its symptoms.

Meet others who understand what it’s like to live with MS, while you learn to strengthen family relationships from a family therapist knowledgeable about MS in either English or Spanish. Children, ages 5 - 13, who have a parent with MS, will discuss MS, their feelings, and participate in fun activities and exercises.

Then, enjoy a Chivas USA vs. Columbus soccer Game. Your kids will have the experience of a lifetime as they take part in a private meet and greet with one of the players.

What will I learn? • How to deal with the ups and downs of

living with a chronic illness

• How to reduce your stress levels and improve communication with loved ones

• How to deal with the uncertainty that living with MS can bring

Cost: $20.00 per person, includes a light dinner, a evening of education, and a ticket to the Chivas USA game

LiNKIf you have been recently diagnosed with MS, you probably have many questions and concerns. The LiNK program matches people who are newly diagnosed with a peer via one-on-one phone or email correspondence. Take the opportunity to ask questions of a person who personally understands life with MS.

Please call Mary Ann Holm at 800.344.4867 for more information or to sign up.

Talk to Someone with MSChat one on one with someone else who has MS! In our Peer Support program, you are matched with a trained volunteer who has MS and is dedicated to helping you navigate the challenges of the disease. This long running program has successfully paired hundreds of clients with a peer who can truly understand what it means to live with MS. Peer Support all takes place via phone, so there is no need to travel to get the support that you need and deserve. Please call Mary Ann Holm at 1.800.344.4867 for details or to sign up.

Page 25: Programs Connection -- April, May, June 2010

Sometimes life with MS can be difficult to cope with and there are times when it can be hard to maintain a positive attitude. Emotions can come in cycles over the course of the disease. Some of these are reactions to the stresses and challenges created by this chronic, unpredictable illness, while others seem to be symptoms of MS itself.

In a recent survey of Californians living with MS, almost half of respondents indicated that they needed emotional support over the last year. Yet there were those who noted that they could not get the help they needed because they could not afford it or because they didn’t know where to look for help.

The Chapter offers a wide array of individual and group counseling services. Licensed profesional therapists will help you find peace of mind as you cope with a diagnosis, changes in symptoms, stress and/or depression. What you’re feeling is common and you are not alone. We’re here to help you move forward. Please call 800.344.4867 to access any of the resources listed below. One-on-one counseling We can connect you to licensed mental health professionals who know and understand MS, as well as help with financial assistance for accessing these resources.

Our TELECOUNSELOR program offers 8-10 individualized sessions via telephone with a licensed therapist provided by the National MS Society. Improve your ability to cope with MS—with all of the comfort and ease of calling from your own home.

Group counselingSupport groups led by a licensed professional offer a place for you to connect with peers in a safe, comfortable environment. Eight-week groups are address specific issues, depending on where you are with your diagnosis.

A professional counselor facilitates an in-person evening group for people diagnosed in the last two years, who are looking for accurate MS information in addition to emotional support. Guest speakers include an MS neurologist and an employment specialist.

A convenient phone group offers professional support for those who are facing significant challenges and disability. This is a great way to connect with others who may be feeling isolated and alone, and have difficulties leaving home.

The Art of Safe Transfer

There is a science to lifting, and failure to learn the basics can lead to unnecessary and often severe injury. Care giving is challenging enough in itself without adding physical risks!

In this workshop, you will receive one-to-one coaching from a licensed physical therapist on how to properly help your patient or loved one transfer, get up after a fall, or walk with assistance when necessary. These techniques take practice before they become second nature, and that’s what the workshop will provide. You’ll learn to cue yourself each time you assist so you won’t fall back into bad habits when the stress is on.

Don’t miss this valuable training opportunity for professional caregivers and family caregivers. Even if you learned these basics before, a refresher course will ensure that you haven’t forgotten important information that can preserve your back and your peace of mind.

Join Walk MS now.

No one is more passionate about ending multiple sclerosis than those who live with the unpredictable effects of the disease each and every day. But passion alone won’t end MS — action will. That’s why, this year, we call on everyone — especially people affected by MS — to put their passion into action and join the movement.
