TREATMENT OF DSF PATIENTS

DSF has more than 500 registered victims from across Pakistan, out of which 200 have either been successfully treated or are at di�erent stages of their treatment. Some victims have to undergo numerous surgeries depending on the intensity of burn. Depilex Smileagain regularly arranges check ups of registered patients to prioritize and schedule the required treatment. To date over 4500 check up/ follow up, medical procedures have been arranged. During the reporting year, 44 surgeries/medical procedures were performed on patients shortlisted for immediate help and treatment. 607check up/ follow up were arranged for patients in various stages of their treatment. In Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi/Islamabad DSF has made arrangements with selected hospitals to carry out the required treatments in best possible environment on subsidized rates.

Specialist from Sweden

Shamim Mallick, President ‘Shama Cosmetic Surgery’ Sweden is a celebrated name in the cosmetic industry. She visited DSF office where an OPD for the patients was organized. The visiting specialist examined 15 patients and gave valuable insight about their follow up treatments. She also �ew to Rawalpindi and assisted a plastic surgeon at CMH in the operation theatre, during few surgeries organized by DSF.

Volunteer Doctors from Italy

Dr. Gabriela Vasilescu, MD, MSc in dermatology (Italy), MSc in Emergency and Disaster Medicine (Romania) visited Pakistan along with Ms. Veronica Gobin (France), skin specialist, to assist and train the team of doctors a�liated

with Depilex Smileagain Foundation in the treatment of burn and acid attack victims.

The team treated 54 patients in Lahore and 17 in Karachi from various parts of Pakistan. With her colleague Dr Vasilescu Dr Gabriela also created protocols and guide lines which are being applied and supported in order to prepare the patients for surgery. The local doctors were trained with competency in practical/clinical dermatology and cosmetic medicine to follow up the treatment. The doctors in Karachi and Lahore are continuing the work on victims and will update the program step by step.

Follow up of Italian Doctors’ Visit

Following Dr Gabriela’s visit in August 2012, 14 DSF patients were selected for treatment in Carboxyl, Photo Dynamic, and Platelet Rich Plasma. Local doctors supporting DSF were trained to the updated techniques. DSF made arrangements with three institutes in Karachi; National Institute of Blood Diseases, Skin Clinic, run by Dr Tasneem Nakhuda and Shamsi Ansari Clinic managed by Dr Uzma Tiwana, to take forward this initiative. Weekly OPDs are conducted in these clinics. This will continue for one year. A research paper will be written to document the treatment process.

Dr Gabriela also short listed three patients for treatment in Italy. Through the dedicated e�orts of its President Masarrat Misbah DSF got travel sponsorship. The boarding/lodging and treatment expenses in Italy are already committed by Dr Gabriela. The three patients are scheduled to be treated in Italy in early 2013.

Volunteer Surgeons from UK Dr Omar Ahmad, a plastic surgeon of repute visiting Pakistan from New Castle, UK, extended voluntary support and provided his services for checkup of DSF patients. 11 patients were short listed and a camp was arranged at National Hospital, Lahore. After a daylong checkup session Dr Omar selected two patients; Sarwari Begum and Shazia Amannuel requiring facial surgeries. The facial surgeries/medical treatment was successfully performed restoring eye, lip and chin contours.

Dr Asim Shah Malak, a hair transplant expert from Crown Clinic UK visited Pakistan and examined 22 DSF patients in Karachi. Being a specialist in eye lash transplant he gave his expert opinion and the treatment is now being taken forward by a local expert Dr Jamil Bhatti in his clinic.

Assessment Visit

DSF team comprising Masarrat Misbah and Aliya Khan visited Lahore General Hospital. This was an assessment visit as many DSF patients were in line for the surgeries/medical procedures. The hospital management was impressed to learn about the humanitarian work being undertaken by Smileagain and o�ered all posible assistance for the victims of domestic violence.

The hospital management invited Masarrat Misbah to be a Board Member for Medical Social Services Project, Anjuman Behboodi-e-Marizan, Lahore General Hospital. Masarrat has accepted to serve as a volunteer.

Orthopedic Spine Center

Two representatives; Mr Majid and Mr Tariq from KKT ORTHOPEDIC SPINE CENTER visited Depilex Smileagain Foundation and held a meeting with Masarrat Misbah President DSF. They also met the sta� and patients. KKT has o�ered to lend support for DSF patients requiring treatment for back and spine related problems. KKT treatment which is a non surgical procedure restores the transmission of signals from brain to body and back from body to brain.

REGISTRATION OF BURNT VICTIMS

Fire in Child Care Unit

The unfortunate short circuit �re incident in the child care unit of Services Hospital Lahore resulted in the sad demise of 12 children. 18 survivors received severe injuries. The DSF team regularly visited the hospital and met with the doctors and parents. Financial support was extended to poor and needy families. DSF team also arranged blood and medicines for the children. Gift hampers for children and mothers were collected from civil society.

Allied HospitaL Faisalabad

On hearing the news of two women being burnt by acid, the DSF team in Lahore rushed to Faislabad and visited the patients in Allied Hospital. Uzma Miraj Din and her little daughter Noor Fatima acompanying her were injured while they were stepping out of the rickshaw in a shoping area. In the other incident Tahira Rukhsana (from Chiniot) was attacked by a relative.

The patients were registered and assured of all possible support. The team also had a meeting with the hospital sta� who complained that due to shortage of electricity the air conditioners do not function. In this scorching heat weather the burnt victims are required to be kept in the cool.

Unfortunately, one victim Uzma Miraj Din could not survive the injuries and died after a few days. The two little girls received minor injuries and were treated in the hospital. DSF made arrangements for required surgical procedure for Tahira Rukhsana.

Fazan, Uzma, Nida and Farha were badly injured when the accused attacked the victim along with her friends, while they were coming out of a factory after work. The incident took place due to a marriage refusal. The patients were registered and taken to Burn Skin Specialist and a Plastic Surgeon at DMG Faisalabad for treatment.

Mayo Hospital, Lahore

Ms. Rehmana, a nurse at Mayo Hospital was subjected to acid attack by her husband while she was at duty in Mayo Hospital Lahore. Her colleague, Ms. Shazia, who was also a nurse and was sitting next to Rehmana was also burnt badly. The culprit was arrested and put behind bars.

DSF team visited the burn victims and both patients are registered with Depilex Smileagain Foundation. Their check up and required surgeries/medical treatment are in process.

Fire in Factory

A really sad incident took place on bund road Lahore in September, when a shoe factory blew up with �re. There were total 34 people inside the building at the time of incident. 32 passed away before reaching the hospital and only 2 survived which were immediately admitted to the hospital by Rescue 1122. DSF team reached hospital and registered Yasir, s/o Abdul Razzaq who was injured badly. He got critical burns on his legs, thighs and has scars all over his face. His surgery/medical treatment is underway.

Fire in Garment Factory, Karachi

259 workers died as �re erupted in garment factory in Baldia Town, Karachi. Between 300 and 400 workers were inside the factory when the blaze erupted. The inferno laid bare the dangerous conditions at some Pakistani factories, as well as the limitations of facilities. The �re horri�ed and shocked the residents of the city. The relatives of the victims struggled to deal with the extent of the tragedy.

A condolence program was organized and DSF joined families of the victims in HUM TV studios. Masarrat Misbah expressed grief over the sad incident and assured the families of the injured and burnt survivors all out support from Depilex Smileagain Foundation.

Burnt Cases in Lahore

On hearing the news through media DSF representative rushed to visit two little girls in Lahore. Zara Ahmad and Alisha Hussain were burnt with hot oil damaging their face and chest. Another tragedy occurred due to a bomb blast injuring Imran Raza who unfortunately lost his eye sight. Sadia Mustafa burnt her arms and chest while playing with match box sticks. DSF arranged there checkup, surgeries/medical treatment.

Uzma Miraj Din and her little daughter Noor Fatima acompanying her were injured while they were stepping out of the rickshaw in a shoping area. In the other incident Tahira Rukhsana (from Chiniot) was attacked by a relative.

The patients were registered and assured of all possible support. The team also had a meeting with the hospital sta� who complained that due to shortage of electricity the air conditioners do not function. In this scorching heat weather the burnt victims are required to be kept in the cool.

Unfortunately, one victim Uzma Miraj Din could not survive the injuries and died after a few days. The two little girls received minor injuries and were treated in the hospital. DSF made arrangements for required surgical procedure for Tahira Rukhsana.

Fazan, Uzma, Nida and Farha were badly injured when the accused attacked the victim along with her friends, while they were coming out of a factory after work. The incident took place due to a marriage refusal. The patients were registered and taken to Burn Skin Specialist and a Plastic Surgeon at DMG Faisalabad for treatment.

Mayo Hospital, Lahore

Ms. Rehmana, a nurse at Mayo Hospital was subjected to acid attack by her husband while she was at duty in Mayo Hospital Lahore. Her colleague, Ms. Shazia, who was also a nurse and was sitting next to Rehmana was also burnt badly. The culprit was arrested and put behind bars.

DSF team visited the burn victims and both patients are registered with Depilex Smileagain Foundation. Their check up and required surgeries/medical treatment are in process.

Fire in Factory

A really sad incident took place on bund road Lahore in September, when a shoe factory blew up with �re. There were total 34 people inside the building at the time of incident. 32 passed away before reaching the hospital and only 2 survived which were immediately admitted to the hospital by Rescue 1122. DSF team reached hospital and registered Yasir, s/o Abdul Razzaq who was injured badly. He got critical burns on his legs, thighs and has scars all over his face. His surgery/medical treatment is underway.

Fire in Garment Factory, Karachi

259 workers died as �re erupted in garment factory in Baldia Town, Karachi. Between 300 and 400 workers were inside the factory when the blaze erupted. The inferno laid bare the dangerous conditions at some Pakistani factories, as well as the limitations of facilities. The �re horri�ed and shocked the residents of the city. The relatives of the victims struggled to deal with the extent of the tragedy.

A condolence program was organized and DSF joined families of the victims in HUM TV studios. Masarrat Misbah expressed grief over the sad incident and assured the families of the injured and burnt survivors all out support from Depilex Smileagain Foundation.

Burnt Cases in Lahore

On hearing the news through media DSF representative rushed to visit two little girls in Lahore. Zara Ahmad and Alisha Hussain were burnt with hot oil damaging their face and chest. Another tragedy occurred due to a bomb blast injuring Imran Raza who unfortunately lost his eye sight. Sadia Mustafa burnt her arms and chest while playing with match box sticks. DSF arranged there checkup, surgeries/medical treatment.

International Women’s Day Celebrations

On the occasion of International Women’s Day President DSF and team participated in a ceremony organized by the Punjab Government. The invitations were extended by Begum Zakia Shahnawaz, Advisor to the Chief Minister Punjab. Masarrat Misbah and DSF team participated in the events held at Alhamra Cultural complex, Lahore. The speakers highlighted the importance of the Day and the participants pledged solidarity with the oppressed.

Later in the day Massarat Misbah and DSF survivors were interviewed by the media. The Mission and activities of DSF were highlighted in the media as a great support to the cause of oppressed su�ering due to violence against women.

Pakistan Television invited DSF survivors on a picnic outing as part of their Women’s Day Celebrations. The program was aired on 8th March 2012.

Aaj TV made a documentary on the life of 4 DSF patients; Sabira Sultana, Anum Shahzadi, Shehnaz and Bushra Shareef. All of them have gone through numerous reconstructive surgeries, psychiatric sessions and given vocational training. The recording team also visited their homes and recorded the views of their families. Aaj TV appreciated the e�orts carried out by Masarrat Misbah, President DSF for her remarkable initiative

DSF Team enjoyed a stage Play in Alhamra

Masarrat Misbah and DSF team was invited to watch a stage play in Alhamra, Lahore Arts Council. The play ‘Us gali na jao’ was produced and directed by Shakeel. The DSF team fully enjoyed the performance of the artists. Participation in social and cultural activities is a continuation of rehabilitation process to reinstate the con�dence of DSF survivors that they are part of the main stream society.

Dinner with Notables

Speaker National Assembly, Fehmida Mirza invited Masarrat Misbah in Islamabad to a dinner hosted in honor of speakers of SAARC contries. On this occasion Masarrat Misbah also had the opportunity to meet women politicians. During the exchange of views the contribution and e�orts of Depilex Smileagain Foundation in helping the acid burnt victims was highly valued.

British Women Association Raised Funds for DSF

A fund raising event for the support of DSF survivors was organized by British Women Association in Karachi. Nazneen Tariq, DSF Coordinator, Sindh, extended her house to be the venue of the event. Friends of DSF donated jewelry carpet and paintings which were auctioned to raise funds. Tammy Haq led the auction in a very entertaining way. The well attended event included representatives of BWA, eminent personalities, philanthropists and DSF volunteers and sta�. The colorful program was followed by dinner.

Mother’s Day Celebrations

University of Central Punjab invited Masarrat Misbah as chief guest in an event celebrating Mother’s Day. She highlighted the importance and value of mother and child relationship. As a founder mother of Depilex Smileagain Foundation she felt proud that she was playing the role of a mother for the victims of acid and kerosene burns. The girls sheltered at her home, medically treated, vocationally trained and socially rehabi litated are her daughters and there is a bond of love between them. She can truly feel the agony of a mother whose daughter is victimized. However, she feels proud that her girls have bravely faced the challenge and many of

them are leading normal life and earning to support their families. She appealed to the audience to join hands with DSF to build social pressure against this crime.

Help Line for Women and Children

Masarrat Misbah was invited as speaker by Madadgaar on the Launching Ceremony of Pakistan's �rst Helpline for children and women. It responds to distress calls by o�ering immediate assistance and linking them to long-term rehabilitation. The Session was chaired by Zakia Shah Nawaz, Chief Minister’s Advisor on Social Welfare in Punjab. The panel of speakers also included Justice (Retired) Nasira Iqbal, and representatives of law enforcing agencies.

Masarat Misbah congratulated Madadgaar for the much needed initiative to serve as the �rst point of contact for victims of violence, abuse and exploitation through guidance and referrals to partners (including shelters, hospitals, lawyers, law enforcement agencies, media etc).

Challenges in pursueing various professions

“Manager Today” documents the e�orts of Masarrat Misbah, as part of the most successfull men and women in Pakistan. An event was held in Royal Palm, Lahore to highlight the chalenges in pursuing various professions. Misbah Masarrat was invited to speak on hurdles in professional experiences. She shared that dedication and commitment were the fundamentals in pursuing any career. During her 30 years career as a beautician she was able to extend the business spread. Starting from one outlet Depilex now has over 30 branches and frenchises in Pakistan and abroad serving women to be beautiful.

Uniform Distribution Ceremony

Harbanspura Trust Schools comprises an educational cluster catering to the lower middle class. Masarrat Misbah was invited as chief guest to Uniform Distribution Ceremony. Under approval of Board of Trustees, uniforms were provided to all the teachers to create an organized and disciplined look. In her address Masarrat Misbah highlighted the importance of personal grooming and gave valuable tips on hygiene and personal care. She also mentioned the unfortunate incidents of violence against women and appealed that if ever there is any burn victim incident in their knowledge they may immediately contact the Depilex Smileagain Foundation. The on time information can help save a life. The trust administration thanked Masarrat Misbah for sparing her valuable time to be with the teachers and management of the trust.

The foundation coordinates the e�orts of over 50 member NGOs working to serve humanity through various activities within their area of expertise. TABA name and Moto is derived from Quranic Ayat:…..and support each other in the act of kindness and good deeds. (Surah Almaida2).

Masarrat Misbah highlighted the activities of DSF and shared that 500 acid burn victims have been registered out of which over 200 have been successfully treated through reconstructive surgery. Many survivors have been rehabilitated after receiving vocational training. She urged the collaborating partners to refer any burn cases from their respective areas and DSF will take care of their treatment, shelter, training and rehabilitation.

IQRA University TEDx

IQRA University held a TEDx event in its Gulberg Lahore Campus. The Topic chosen for discussion was ‘I Dream of a Pakistan’. Dignitaries from various walks of life were invited to participate in the discussion. Masarrat Misbah, General (Retd) Khalid Maqbool Jan,ex Governor Punjab, Oria Maqbool Jan, Yousuf Sallahuddin, Javed Chaudhry and Mohammad Malik expressed their views. Masarrat Misbah addressing the youth highlighted how Pakistan was handed over to the older generation by Quad-E- Azam and how institutions are gradually showing signs of deterioration. She hoped that youth will steer the future Pakistan in progressive direction.

An initiative taken by the Allama Iqbal Thinkers Forum at LGS JT, it was a special event held on the International TEDx Youth Day; 17th November, where organizers all over the globe organized youth-based events revolving around the theme ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ focusing on the development of the Youth. The event was streamed live on the o�cial TED website and was viewed by millions on the internet.

Masarrat Misbah was introduced as an entrepreneur, a highly talented beautician but most importantly a hard working social activist which is the most inspiring part of her personality.

Starting with quotes of Allama Iqbal and Mohammad Ali Jinnah, she highlighted the role of youth in creation of a homeland for Muslims and taking forward the ideals in building a prosperous Pakistan. She emphasized the importance of gender balance and advised the young people to respect and treat females as equal in all relationships. Youth should follow and promote the golden concepts of dignity, respect and honor of women, tolerance, and justice for all as laid down in Quran.

PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS

International Women’s Day Celebrations

On the occasion of International Women’s Day President DSF and team participated in a ceremony organized by the Punjab Government. The invitations were extended by Begum Zakia Shahnawaz, Advisor to the Chief Minister Punjab. Masarrat Misbah and DSF team participated in the events held at Alhamra Cultural complex, Lahore. The speakers highlighted the importance of the Day and the participants pledged solidarity with the oppressed.

Later in the day Massarat Misbah and DSF survivors were interviewed by the media. The Mission and activities of DSF were highlighted in the media as a great support to the cause of oppressed su�ering due to violence against women.

Pakistan Television invited DSF survivors on a picnic outing as part of their Women’s Day Celebrations. The program was aired on 8th March 2012.

Aaj TV made a documentary on the life of 4 DSF patients; Sabira Sultana, Anum Shahzadi, Shehnaz and Bushra Shareef. All of them have gone through numerous reconstructive surgeries, psychiatric sessions and given vocational training. DSF Team enjoyed a stage Play in Alhamra

Masarrat Misbah and DSF team was invited to watch a stage play in Alhamra, Lahore Arts Council. The play ‘Us gali na jao’ was produced and directed by Shakeel. The DSF team fully enjoyed the performance of the artists. Participation in social and cultural activities is a continuation of rehabilitation process to reinstate the con�dence of DSF survivors that they are part of the main stream society.

Dinner with Notables

Speaker National Assembly, Fehmida Mirza invited Masarrat Misbah in Islamabad to a dinner hosted in honor of speakers of SAARC contries. On this occasion Masarrat Misbah also had the opportunity to meet women politicians. During the exchange of views the contribution and e�orts of Depilex Smileagain Foundation in helping the acid burnt victims was highly valued.

British Women Association Raised Funds for DSF

A fund raising event for the support of DSF survivors was organized by British Women Association in Karachi. Nazneen Tariq, DSF Coordinator, Sindh, extended her house to be the venue of the event. Friends of DSF donated jewelry carpet and paintings which were auctioned to raise funds. Tammy Haq led the auction in a very entertaining way. The well attended event included representatives of BWA, eminent personalities, philanthropists and DSF volunteers and sta�. The colorful program was followed by dinner.

Mother’s Day Celebrations

University of Central Punjab invited Masarrat Misbah as chief guest in an event celebrating Mother’s Day. She highlighted the importance and value of mother and child relationship. As a founder mother of Depilex Smileagain Foundation she felt proud that she was playing the role of a mother for the victims of acid and kerosene burns. The girls sheltered at her home, medically treated, vocationally trained and socially rehabi litated are her daughters and there is a bond of love between them. She can truly feel the agony of a mother whose daughter is victimized. However, she feels proud that her girls have bravely faced the challenge and many of

them are leading normal life and earning to support their families. She appealed to the audience to join hands with DSF to build social pressure against this crime.

Help Line for Women and Children

Masarrat Misbah was invited as speaker by Madadgaar on the Launching Ceremony of Pakistan's �rst Helpline for children and women. It responds to distress calls by o�ering immediate assistance and linking them to long-term rehabilitation. The Session was chaired by Zakia Shah Nawaz, Chief Minister’s Advisor on Social Welfare in Punjab. The panel of speakers also included Justice (Retired) Nasira Iqbal, and representatives of law enforcing agencies.

Masarat Misbah congratulated Madadgaar for the much needed initiative to serve as the �rst point of contact for victims of violence, abuse and exploitation through guidance and referrals to partners (including shelters, hospitals, lawyers, law enforcement agencies, media etc).

Challenges in pursueing various professions

“Manager Today” documents the e�orts of Masarrat Misbah, as part of the most successfull men and women in Pakistan. An event was held in Royal Palm, Lahore to highlight the chalenges in pursuing various professions. Misbah Masarrat was invited to speak on hurdles in professional experiences. She shared that dedication and commitment were the fundamentals in pursuing any career. During her 30 years career as a beautician she was able to extend the business spread. Starting from one outlet Depilex now has over 30 branches and frenchises in Pakistan and abroad serving women to be beautiful.

Uniform Distribution Ceremony

Harbanspura Trust Schools comprises an educational cluster catering to the lower middle class. Masarrat Misbah was invited as chief guest to Uniform Distribution Ceremony. Under approval of Board of Trustees, uniforms were provided to all the teachers to create an organized and disciplined look. In her address Masarrat Misbah highlighted the importance of personal grooming and gave valuable tips on hygiene and personal care. She also mentioned the unfortunate incidents of violence against women and appealed that if ever there is any burn victim incident in their knowledge they may immediately contact the Depilex Smileagain Foundation. The on time information can help save a life. The trust administration thanked Masarrat Misbah for sparing her valuable time to be with the teachers and management of the trust.

Launching Ceremony of TABA

DSF team comprising Masarrat Misbah President, Ayesha Taslim Director Program and Aliya Khan External Relations Manager participated in the Launching Ceremony of TABA Foundation held on 6th October 2012, at LUMS.

The foundation coordinates the e�orts of over 50 member NGOs working to serve humanity through various activities within their area of expertise. TABA name and Moto is derived from Quranic Ayat:…..and support each other in the act of kindness and good deeds. (Surah Almaida2).

Masarrat Misbah highlighted the activities of DSF and shared that 500 acid burn victims have been registered out of which over 200 have been successfully treated through reconstructive surgery. Many survivors have been rehabilitated after receiving vocational training. She urged the collaborating partners to refer any burn cases from their respective areas and DSF will take care of their treatment, shelter, training and rehabilitation.

IQRA University TEDx

IQRA University held a TEDx event in its Gulberg Lahore Campus. The Topic chosen for discussion was ‘I Dream of a Pakistan’. Dignitaries from various walks of life were invited to participate in the discussion. Masarrat Misbah, General (Retd) Khalid Maqbool Jan,ex Governor Punjab, Oria Maqbool Jan, Yousuf Sallahuddin, Javed Chaudhry and Mohammad Malik expressed their views. Masarrat Misbah addressing the youth highlighted how Pakistan was handed over to the older generation by Quad-E- Azam and how institutions are gradually showing signs of deterioration. She hoped that youth will steer the future Pakistan in progressive direction.

International TEDx Youth Day

Lahore Grammar School (LGS) Johar Town invited Masarrat Misbah as a speaker at TEDxYouth@LGS. An initiative taken by the Allama Iqbal Thinkers Forum at LGS JT, it was a special event held on the International TEDx Youth Day; 17th November, where organizers all over the globe organized youth-based events revolving around the theme ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ focusing on the development of the Youth. The event was streamed live on the o�cial TED website and was viewed by millions on the internet.

Masarrat Misbah was introduced as an entrepreneur, a highly talented beautician but most importantly a hard working social activist which is the most inspiring part of her personality.

Starting with quotes of Allama Iqbal and Mohammad Ali Jinnah, she highlighted the role of youth in creation of a homeland for Muslims and taking forward the ideals in building a prosperous Pakistan. She emphasized the importance of gender balance and advised the young people to respect and treat females as equal in all relationships. DSF organized two events in Karachi and Lahore to thank its supporters and donors, specially Philip Morris Pakistan and Mactor Pharmaceutical. DSF brave survivors shared their life experiences and expressed gratitude for the generous and continuous support of friends and donors. Massarat Misbah presented highlights of DSF activities. DSF Ambassador and supporter Younus Junaid hosted the events and recited a ‘Naat’ specially written for DSF fund raising. DSF victims recited Talawat and presented poetry from Bulleh Shah, Mirza Ghalib, quotes about beauty from Audrey Hepburn and vote of thanks. The audience was touched by the pathos and appreciated the con�dence of the presenters. The Chief Guest of the Karachi event Mr Nisar Ahmad Khoro, Speaker National Assembly, Sindh in his address acknowledged the humanitarian work that Depilex Smileagain Foundation is pursuing to help the burnt victims. He appreciated that the victims were not only provided medical help but were also trained and rehabilitated as functional members of the society.

DSF Team Participated in ‘Pehchan Ramazan’ Program Amir Liaqat invited Masrrat Misbah and DSF team to participate in his popular show ‘Alim on Line’ While Masarrat Misbah presented an overview of violence against women in Pakistan, the DSF survivors narrated their stories of oppression. Kanwal Yousuf highlighted her story as a case study. After the sad acid attack DSF not only arranged medical treatment but also arranged advance beauty courses in vocational training from Depilex Beauty Institute Karachi. The program took a happy turn when Ashar a boy from Karachi got interested in her and proposed for marriage. Amir Liaqat promised on show that he will join the wedding ceremony and will be available to perform the Nikah recitals. Kanwal Yousaf is now happily married to Ashar. Amir Liaqat kept his promise and joined the ceremony later in the year. A Day with Masarrat Misbah

HUM TV team recorded ‘A Day with Masarrat Misbah’. Masarrat Misbah is a beautician of International fame turned philanthropist and one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Pakistan. Depilex Smileagain Foundation was conceptualized by her in 2003 and registered in 2005 as a non-pro�t organization. It has the professional and monetary support of Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute established 30 years ago. The program highlighted her busy routine. Her �rst priority of this morning was well being of DSF patient Mamoona who was operated in General Hospital two days back. The camera followed her to the multi story building which houses the Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute occupying four �oors, with Depilex Smileagain o�ce in the basement. Through the reception on the ground �oor the recording team captured glimpses of a meeting with smileagain sta� discusing activities to be undertaken during the day.

In the afternoon the renowned singer Younus Junaid visited Smileagain and entertained the sta� with a song that he has dedicated in recognition of the humanitarian services being rendered by Smileagain. On the upper �oors the camera captured the DSF trained survivors as professional sta� serving incoming clients for make up, hair cutting, mani/pedi cure, beauty therapy etc.. It was heart warming to note that the acid and kerosene oil burnt victims, cured, trained and rehabilitated by Smileagain Foundation were employed by Depilex Beauty Clinic.

Later, in the afternoon the rehabilitation centre established in the upper story of her residence was the centre of recording activities.

Daniela Zavala Maria, a journalist of repute from Venezuela visited Smileagain o�ce in Lahore. Being an activist on women’s issues she travels around the globe highlighting women’s issues. She was introduced to the survivors and was fascinated to see them working as professionals. She highly commended the e�orts of Depilex Smileagain Foundation in helping the most vulnerablle women from registration to shelter, surgeries, vocational training and rehabilitation process. During her visit she made a documentry titled ‘Pakistani Victims of Acid Attacks get a second chance’. It was produced in English and Spanish versions and was aired from Univision Networks; the most important and largest Spanish speaking network in USA. The show "Primer Impacto" is the most watched of the network and is among the TOP5 most watched programs in TV in USA (both English and Spanish) so the story had a large reach. The show was also aired (in di�erent schedules) in Latin America, including Mexico, Venezuela and Columbia.

Awareness Session

Team DSF was invited to visit LACAS for an awareness session for the students. The team highlighted the problem of violence against women with special emphasis in incidents of acid burning. The school administration appreciated the e�orts carried out by the foundation and assured their complete support in projecting and promoting the DSF mission.

Amir Ghauri from ARY News invited Masarrat Misbah President DSF for a panel discussion in a talk show. The topic was “Where does the Pakistani Women stand today”. Various eloquent speakers were also present to participate in the discussion. Masarrat Misbah shared the facts and informed the audience that unfortunately, Pakistan is ranked no. 3 after Afghanistan and Congo on the list of countries for inhumane behavior with women and children. DSF survivors Anooshey and Sabra Sultana, narrated their stories and discussed the misery and plight of acid attack victims.

Violence Against Women

City 42 recorded Studio Interview with a Celebrity by Amna Kardar. The one hour conversation discussed variuos issues related to domestic violence. Highlighting the plight of women across the globe in general and Pakistan in particular Masarrat Misbah expressed that violence a�ects the lives of millions of women worldwide, in all socio-economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impeding the right of women to participate fully in society.

Violence Against Women (VAW) takes a dismaying variety of forms, from domestic abuse and rape to child marriages and intentionally burning women by throwing acid on the face and body. These inhuman actions are violations of the most fundamental human rights.

Meh�l-e-Milad

During the VAW week, DSF organized Meh�l-e-Milad. Mrs Samia Qazi, Aisha Sana, Fareeha Pervez, DSF patients

and sta� participated. Mrs Samia Qazi highlighted the rights and respect that Islam has bestowed on women. She reiterated that violence against women is a crime. While the perpetrators are condemned by the society, hell awaits them in life hereafter. Mrs Samia Qazi appreciated the gesture of DSF for organizing the pious event. Naat Khawani and Dua followed. The participants prayed for the solidarity of Pakistan, welfare of DSF and all present.

Journalist from Japan

Japenese media representative documented the plight of burnt victims: A renowned Journalist from Japan visited DSF and made a report interviewing DSF brave survivors. The journalist was also facilitated to visit Kanwal Qayyum’s residence at Karachi and documented the facts. Kanwal aspired to be an air hostess but her in laws threw acid on her on the day before her interview.

Fund Raiser Show

DSF has done a fund raiser with TV 1 on ‘Faisal Qureshi Show’. Masarrat Misbah with the renowned singer Junaid made the appearance on the program. DSF survivors Maimoona, Sabra Sultana and Tahira Bashir also accompanied her.

Enforcement of Laws

DSF patient Bushra and External Relations Manager Aliya Khan participated in a TV interview on the invitation from Koh-e-Noor Television Channel. Bushra who has been treated, trained and rehabilitated by DSF narrated her story. She happily informed that after her treatment she was trained by Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute and is now working as a full time professional with Depilex. Aliya Khan expressed her concern over the weak legislation and poor implementation of laws. There is a need to improve the existing laws and enforcement of laws with strict punishments. The DSF representatives also highlighted the need to establish more burn units and to improve the facilities in the existing burn units.

Dawn news appreciated the e�orts of DSF and invited DSF brave survivors Tahira Bashir and Yasmeen Nadeem to a program. The survivors spoke about the importance of legislative acts and active frame work for implementation. They also appealed the positive forces to come forward and help eradicate this heartless crime.

Indonesian Radio appreciates DSF mission

Mr. Naeem Sahoutra from Asia Calling Radio visited DSF and interviewed the survivors. The audio documentary highlighted the mission and objectives of DSF and projected the sad stories of burnt victims, followed by the narratives of their brave survival.

DSF Team calls on Information Minister

Masarrat Misbah along with her team of DSF patients visited Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and met with Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan. The information Minister was briefed about the DSF mission. She highly appreciated the e�orts of DSF in taking forward the cause of victims of violence.

On the International Day of Women, PTV recording team visited DSF o�ce and interviewed the acid and kerosene oil burn victims. KFC Support for DSF

KFC organized a function for DSF survivors. Masarrat Misbah along with her team attended the ceremony and delivered a lecture about the plight and distress faced by burnt victims. She also urged the governing bodies to impose a stringent law for this ruthless crime.

Oscar Award

Japenese media representative documented the plight of burnt victims: A renowned Journalist from Japan visited DSF and made a report interviewing DSF brave survivors. The journalist was also facilitated to visit Kanwal Qayyum’s residence at Karachi and documented the facts. Kanwal aspired to be an air hostess but her in laws threw acid on her on the day before her interview.

DSF has done a fund raiser with TV 1 on ‘Faisal Qureshi Show’. Masarrat Misbah with the renowned singer Junaid made the appearance on the program. DSF survivors Maimoona, Sabra Sultana and Tahira Bashir also accompanied her.

DSF patient Bushra and External Relations Manager Aliya Khan participated in a TV interview on the invitation from Koh-e-Noor Television Channel. Bushra who has been treated, trained and rehabilitated by DSF narrated her story. Aliya Khan expressed her concern over the weak legislation and poor implementation of laws. There is a need to improve the existing laws and enforcement of laws with strict punishments. Depilex Smileagain Foundation was conceptualized by her in 2003 and registered in 2005 as a non-pro�t organization. It has the professional and monetary support of Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute established 30 years ago. The program highlighted her busy routine. Her �rst priority of this morning was well being of DSF patient Mamoona who was operated in General Hospital two days back. The camera followed her to the multi story building which houses the Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute occupying four �oors, with Depilex Smileagain o�ce in the basement. Through the reception on the ground �oor the recording team captured glimpses of a meeting with smileagain sta� discusing activities to be undertaken during the day.

In the afternoon the renowned singer Younus Junaid visited Smileagain and entertained the sta� with a song that he has dedicated in recognition of the humanitarian services being rendered by Smileagain. On the upper �oors the camera captured the DSF trained survivors as professional sta� serving incoming clients for make up, hair cutting, mani/pedi cure, beauty therapy etc.. Daniela Zavala Maria, a journalist of repute from Venezuela visited Smileagain o�ce in Lahore. Being an activist on women’s issues she travels around the globe highlighting women’s issues. She was introduced to the survivors and was fascinated to see them working as professionals. She highly commended the e�orts of Depilex Smileagain Foundation in helping the most vulnerablle women from registration to shelter, surgeries, vocational training and rehabilitation process. During her visit she made a documentry titled ‘Pakistani Victims of Acid Attacks get a second chance’. It was produced in English and Spanish versions and was aired from Univision Networks; the most important and largest Spanish speaking network in USA. The show "Primer Impacto" is the most watched of the network and is among the TOP5 most watched programs in TV in USA (both English and Spanish) so the story had a large reach. The show was also aired (in di�erent schedules) in Latin America, including Mexico, Venezuela and Columbia.

Team DSF was invited to visit LACAS for an awareness session for the students. The team highlighted the problem of violence against women with special emphasis in incidents of acid burning. CONFERENCES

Peace Conference

Masarrat Misbah was invited by Bardasht ( NGO) to join in the consultative meeting. Detailed discussions were held to hold a Conference in Lahore as part of the provincial series of the Peace Conferences in collaboration with UN. Venue, date, segments of forums, formation of committees and speakers was discussed in detail. Masarrat Misbah was unanimously elected to be the the Chairperson of the Conference. She graciously accepted and extended the invitation to hold the next meeting at Depilex Smileagain Foundation o�ce on 02 July.

A meeting was hosted by Depilex Smileagain to take forward the holding of Peace Conference innitiative. Representatives of Bardasht from Islamabad head office and Lahore Chapter attended the meeting. Tasks for follow up were assigned and the next consultative meeting was �xed on 09 July. The Conference was evetually held on 18 july 2012.

Hijab Conference

International Hijab Conference was held at Pearl Continental Lahore on 15th September, 2012. Masarrat Misbah attended the event along with her Depilex Smileagain Foundation (DSF) team of acid victims. It was an inspiring event that emphasized on the importance of hijab in an Islamic society by raising awareness, building a positive image of hijab and addressing the negative misconceptions on the Muslim headdress.

Mrs. Raja Ashraf (wife of PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf ) appeared as chief guest and presented “Special hijab award” to Masarrat Misbah, President Depilex Smileagain foundation, not only for medical and vocational support of the acid victims but also grooming them to be ideal women with religious and cultural values .

Rural Women Conference

In October, Depilex Smileagain Foundation participated in the Rural Women Conference held on International Day of Rural Women in Lok Virsa Islamabad. The conference was organized by Potohar Organization for Development Advocacy. DSF sponsored solidarity message in the brochure reiterating the urgent need to encourage greater involvement of marginalized women including indigenous women, women with diabilities, and women from rural areas, in decision making at all levels. VISITS ABROAD

Turin, Italy

Masarrat Misbah attended the training program on Academy on Skills Development organized by International Labor Organization (ILO) in International Training Center, Turin, Italy. Being a pioneer and leading beautician she represented the beauty industry sector development. The course helped in advancement of knowledge about labor organizations in Pakistan, the role and responsibilities of Gop, public private partnership and donor agencies. Musarrat Misbah’s e�orts in beauty sector development were highly appreciated. Her role in helping the oppressed women victims of acid burns received tremendous applause. The process from registration to medical treatment, training and rehabilitation was recognized as a great humane gesture.

Florence, Italy

From Turin, Masarrat Misbah went to Florence to meet the doctors helping DSF burnt victims. This visit helped in future planning of check up and surgeries/medical treatment. Dr Gabriella and her team �nalized the schedule for further treatment of ongoing patients involving research therapy reconstructive procedures. Out of the DSF patients treated earlier by Dr Gabriela during her visit to Pakistan in July 2012, six girls have been short listed to be sent to Italy for advance treatment.

Dubai

On her way back from Italy, a visit to Dubai was dovetailed where Masarrat approached the philanthropists for fundraising. In this short visit and campaign, the contribution, support and generosity of Attiya Shahid and Alma is appreciated.

Geneva, Switzerland

Ayesha Taslim, Director Program participated as a guest panelist from Pakistan in the side event: Reassessing Women’s Rights in Pakistan, held in the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Moderated by Maria Munoz Maraver of Women International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) the event shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of the review of Pakistan’s report on the United Nation’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR}. The context setting on the situation of women’s human rights in Pakistan recognize that Pakistan has made some meaningful progress in women’s rights and laws protecting women from domestic violence as well as acid burn crimes have been passed. But the laws that are in place are not implemented or have such meager penalties that there is no deterrent to break them.

Ayesha Taslim went on to o�er recommendations to help remedy the problems in Pakistan. In terms of addressing state laws and procedures she suggested that police should be trained in gender sensitivity, the sale of pure acid should be banned.

Hazrat Khadija Tul Kubra Award

“I have got many awards but receiving the Hazrat Khadija Tul Kubra Award is a real honor for me. An award with the title of a woman of courage, righteousness, wife of the pro�t (PBUH) and perfect in all relationships, a role model for all women, and successful business women, is the best way to be recognized for the humanitarian work that I have chosen to do since 2003.” These were the words of gratitude by Masarrat Misbah who received the big honor of Hazrat Khadija Tul Kubra Award in a ceremony held in Avari Hotel Lahore on 6th November 2012.

The event was organized by Pakistan Federation of Business & Professional Women (BPWO). Begum Zakia Shahnawaz, Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab, was the chief guest on the occasion. Nasreen Mahdi from BPWO in her citation commended the e�orts of Masarrat Misbah for her humanitarian services rendered through Depilex Smileagain Foundation. She invited the attention of the chief guest and the audience to the heinous crime of acid throwing on women and urged the government to give maximum punishment to the culprits. Begum Zakia Shahnawaz while handing over the award commended her contribution as an entrepreneur, a social worker and a humanitarian.

Masarrat Misbah got standing ovation by the audience when she was receiving the award.

Wonder Women Award

On the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March, twenty-three exceptional Pakistani women including Masarrat Misabah were presented Wonder Women of the Year Awards at a grand ceremony at Hotel Pearl Continental Lahore.

2nd Wonder Women of the Year Awards ceremony , structured under the auspices of National Hero Foundation (NHF) was presided over by Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza as Abdul Sattar Edhi, (FATA member Parliament/Chairman IPO) Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi and distinguished journalist Mehmood Sham were the guests of honor. Speaking about the selection modus operandi the organizers informed that over 700,000 nominations were received from 19 countries (& 32 cities of Pakistan), and preference was given to living legends (so that their work was recognized during their lives), while 10-15% late icons were awarded. The governing council of NHF unanimously selected Most Inspirational Women for the awards.

A beautiful young girl Kanwal Yousuf who was burnt with acid is now back in shape after a series of surgeries arranged by DSF. She is now taking advance beauty courses from Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute Karachi. The good news is that a handsome young boy got interested in her. They got married in October. DSF made all arrangements for the wedding in Karachi. The events with live coverage of mehndi, wedding and walima were sponsored by GEO TV. Masarrat Misbah and DSF friends participated in the events.

Urooj Akbar

A really happy time was celebrated at Depilex Smileagain Foundation when Arooj Akbar (acid victim) tied her wedding knot. The entire DSF Foundation team happily made all arrangements for a memorable event. Musarrat Misbah gave her a stunning look on her special day. It was an event encompassed by good wishes and amusement. All her Depilex friends were very happy and organized this event with a great zeal. They all bought presents for her and wished her a happy and successful married life.

DSF patient Rubina engaged to Rustam

Rubina belonging to Karachi got registered with DSF as a burnt patient in 2009. DSF arranged her treatment and the happy news is that she has recently got engaged with a local young boy Rustam. Her engagement event was covered live by Geo. DSF will make arrangements for the wedding which is planned to take place in March 2013.

DSF survivor Sumaira gives birth to a beautiful baby boy

It’s a boy! DSF survivor Sumaira gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. DSF celebrated athe happy occasion and congratulated the family, wishing the child a healthy and happy life. DSF took care for all expenses of the delivery including travel, lodging and boarding of the family.

Shamim Akhtar, a DSF patient who had been happily married after numerous surgeries gave birth to a tiny baby girl. DSF family celebrated the arrival of the new comer with fondness. DSF covered all the expenses for her delivery and post delivery. She is also provided a monthly stipend for her shelter cost.

Beauty Training Courses for DSF Survivors

DSF celebrated the completion of advance beauty course of her DSF survivor. Shanaz Kausar, burnt victim was successfully treated and is now leading a healthy life. As part of the rehabilitation process she was enrolled to be trained as a beautician. After passing the initial courses she joined the advance beauty course and successfully completed and passed. DSF is proud that Shahnaz now runs her own beauty Salon in Jhelum with the name of “Smile Beauty Palour” . After successful completion of beauty courses, DSF survivors Anam Shhzadi and Rabia Batool are placed as full time workers in Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute.

DSF also arranged the placement of Amna Tariq, Iqra Arshad and Fatema Ghazan�ar on Beauty Courses regularly o�ered by Depilex Beauty Clinic and Institute. They have successfully quali�ed. Amna Tariq works from home as a beautician. Fatema Ghazanfar is already employed as a nurse in Mayo Hospital and Iqra Arshad, who availed her

holidays for the beauty course is now back to college for further studies.Happily rehabilitated and back to normal life they feel proud as being self su�cient and useful members of the society.

Mamoona to become a quali�ed Nurse

Mamoona has received continuing support from DSF for the last �ve years. DSF helped her to complete her initial studies. She has passed the matriculation examination and has also completed a computer course. She is presently studying to become a quali�ed nurse in Indus Hospital, Karachi with the help and support of DSF.

Gifts for DSF Survivors

Najla, a student of Beaconhouse National University (BNU) visited Smileagain. She met some of the acid burnt survovors and was highly motivated about the excellent humanitarian services being rendered by the organization. She remembered the survivors while undertaking her recent thesis which comprised an exhibition of designed shawls, scarves and mu�ers. She used cloth weaved from organic materials and vegetable color dyes. Remembering the soothing effect of organic material for the skin of the burnt victims, she specially designed scarves for them. The DSF team along with the President was invited to the exhibition jointly held by the students of BNU. Najla presented the beautifully designed and colorful scarves to the DSF team of survivors.

ID Cards

DSF patients Nasreen Sharif and Saira Siddique were taken to Nadra Punjab o�ce for the renewal of their National Identity Cards.

As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, organizers and students of English and Business Communication Department, Khadim Ali Shah Bukhari Institute of Technology, Karachi organized an event to pay tribute to brave survivors of DSF. Musarrat Misbah was invited as chief guest. The students produced a short theatre play projecting the courage of acid and kerosene burnt survivors. The video of the play shown to the audience was highly applauded. The students had also raised funds for DSF and the cheque was presented to Masarrat Misbah. Shahid Afridi also joined as a special guest and was moved by the humanitarian work of DSF. He assured all out support and said that he is only a phone call away for DSF cause. Masarrat Misbah thanked the organizers and the students for collecting funds and having arranged the event. She also acknowledged the participation and goodwill gesture of Shaid Afridi.

Research Assistance

Throughout the year students from various institutes and universities from all over Pakistan contact DSF for writing thesis covering multi-dimensional aspects related to violence against women. The students were assisted in data collection, interviews and testimonials of DSF patients. Masarrat Misbah takes personal interest in guiding the students.
