Literacy Sponsors: Intuitively, sponsorsseemed a fitting term for the figures who

turned up most typically in peoples

memories of literacy learning: olderrelatives, teachers, priests, supervisors,

military officers, editors, influential authors.(Deborah Brandt, 335 )

Like Legos, literacies can build off of oneanother; combing into completely unique

forms. These literacies relate to oneanother and occur on a timeline frominfancy to adulthood at various degrees ofrelevancy.

When one or more literacy sponsors are

taken away they can affect how a personlearns, grows and thinks.

    Parents & Family

In general, our parents, consciously or not, aid in the development ofmore basic literacies: language, communication, and later in our lives;morality. However, our families also introduce newer varying

sponsors of literacy to us, which guides our development.

Parents and Family are literacy sponsors who teach us throughout ourwhole lives. Infancy, Pre. Education, Childhood, Adolescence,Adulthood.

My parents often tell me stories of when I was a baby and how theywould compete to get me to say momma or papa first. My mom endedup winning and my first word was momma. However it was my dad whointroduced me to sports, and to this day I still play basketball.

    Friends

Although the literacies our friends can introduce to are innumerable, generallyany friend can expand on our literacies of morality, body language & tone, andcompanionship.

Friends teach us these literacies; Morality, Behavior & expression,Communication, and Companionship from Pre. Education untill the rest of ourlives.

    Sports & extra-curricular

Aside from building on our base of friends, who can themselves sponsor literacies, sports & extra-curricular activities on their own can establish an understanding ofteam dynamics, and fine tune our evaluation of threats.

I can relate to this, because of a personal example of joining the marching band inhigh school. While preparing for my first performance, my instructor reallystressed just how important it was to listen to one another and feed off of oneanothers energy while on the field, so that we can truly perform as one bandtogether, which really helped to gain those team dynamic skills.

    Religion

Religion is a literacies that ties into every other literacy. For those who grew up asspiritual beings and learning about religion are affected for the rest of their lives.

Religion is so strong it can save and some times take lives.

    Media

We learn many literacy skills through the media, it allows us to become aware ofthings around us and it provides the ability to stay connected with ourcommunity. Technology and Media in the modern world is nearly impossible toescape, because of this we learn from it all the time. It is evident in or learning

    from Pre. Education and onward.

Media allows you to learn literacies from all over the world, it helps you becomecultured due to the fact that it is so versatile. For example, when a major disasteroccurs, news crews and camera men rush to the affected area and allow people to

watch and understand what is happening.

Provides you with a theory of your environment

    Internet & Computer

Internet and the use of computers have many different ways in which we can learn to expandour knowledge of basic literacies, such as coding interface, internet navigation, softwareinterface (media), symbol interpretation (language), and symbol presentation(communication).

Many social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or even the good old Myspace haveall taught me personally the literacy of symbol interpretation and presentation. The way thatpeople go about communicating with one another through these sites is a literacy developedfrom the use of these computers and other sources of technology.

    School

School, out of them all, is probably the most common source for gaining knowledge of basicliteracies. To narrow down, the most important literacies, one can truly achieve from school, would include, reading, writing (formatting), logic (mathematics), and theory ofenvironment (past(history)).

School, to me has always been looked upon as the main source of where I have obtainedmost of my knowledge. Through the processes of learning how to read, how to write, mathematics, and history or theory of environment, I have personally grown a lotacademically, and have learned so much from this literacy sponsor.

    Work

Throughout the course of work, one gains knowledge in basic literacies such as roleevaluation, communication with others in a work setting, and body language. Theseliteracies dont play affect into our timeline until the adolescent or adulthood stages of ourlives though.

I know personally, that work can be a very important literacy to have, while entering intoadulthood, because it allows us to have certain attributes or skills, such as leadership andresponsibility, which we will need for the rest of our lives.

Overall, a lot of these literacy sponsors such as parents, school, and work, to name a few, play a part at different stages of ourlives. However, depending on which stage it is occurring in, it can

change the effect it truly has on gaining knowledge from thatparticular literacy. For example, parents at the infancy or pre-edstages are vital literacies that one needs in their life, whereastowards adolescence and adulthood, they are not that importantof a literacy sponsor. This change in literacy is important for one

to gain knowledge throughout the course of their life, and byeliminating one of these literacy sponsors, it will have a lastingeffect on the individual.
