AMEC innovates to deliver the best solutions on projects. Our proprietary project management system, Convero, is one of the most important tools in our journey towards consistent project delivery across all of AMEC’s businesses and regions. Convero’s functionality and methodologies have been field-proven on challenging international projects in a variety of industrial sectors and contracting strategies. Convero is:

Supply Chain Management

AMEC’s supply chain management (SCM) services help to deliver enhanced project performance and to satisfy customers. Our service suppliers and capital equipment are assessed through an electronic evaluation system, which evaluates in the categories of: HSSE, scope, commercial, sustainability, quality systems and financial. This process allows us to procure the best equipment and work the right contractors for each project.

Our execution centres in China, Indonesia and Philippines, provide SCM services for equipment supply and fabrication to our projects worldwide, taking advantage of the lower costs in these countries to deliver greater value to our customers.

Cloudbreak Ore Handling Plant Wet Front End Project, Australia Fortescue Metals Group

AMEC’s Perth office, as part of the CEPT Joint Venture was awarded a $247 million engineering, procurement and construction contract for Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak ore handling plant wet front end project in Western Australia.

The CEPT (Cloudbreak Enhancement Project Team) JV comprises AMEC and KAGC, a joint venture between Kiewit Australia Pty Ltd and AGC Industries Pty Ltd.

AMEC’s principal role within the EPC contract is detailed engineering, procurement of equipment and site support.

AMEC began work on the Early Contract Involvement (ECI) phase for Cloudbreak in March 2011.

Western Range Iron Ore Project, Liberia Arcelor Mittal

AMEC is currently providing services to ArcelorMittal for the Nimba Western Range iron ore project, Phase 2. This follows the successful completion of a DFS for Phase 2 of the project, resulting in AMEC being awarded an EPCM contract to deliver the project.

The project scope includes the design and construction of a new 15 Mt/a concentrator at the mine (Tokadeh), and upgrades of the railway line and product export facilities, located at the port of Buchanan, including associated power supply infrastructure to match.

The project is being jointly delivered by AMEC’s Johannesburg and Toronto offices.

Tenke Fungurume Copper-Cobalt Project, DRC Freeport-McMoRan

The Tenke Fungurume project, completed in 2009, was the first major greenfield project in a rapidly stabilising DRC, following decades of civil war.

Early in 2007, AMEC was awarded the EPCM contract by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., after acquisition of Phelps Dodge Corporation, for the landmark Tenke Fungurume project in the DRC. This followed AMEC’s appointment to commence the detailed design phase of the project in mid 2006.

The appointment was also recognition of a strong performance on the feasibility study phase in 2005/2006. The project was commissioned in the first half of 2009, with the first shipment of copper occurring in April 2009.

Langer Heinrich Uranium Project, Namibia Paladin Energy Limited

Following the completion of the definitive feasibility study (DFS) in 2005, AMEC was awarded the EPCM contract for the Langer Heinrich uranium project.

The project was the first uranium plant to be constructed outside of Canada in the preceding 25 years and was designed to produce 1, 180 Mt of U3O8 per year over a 15 year life of mine.

The scope of work involved development of all process data, engineering design, project management, procurement and construction management. In 2011, AMEC was awarded the DFS for stage IV of the project.

Phu Kham Copper-Gold Expansion Project, Laos PanAust Limited via Phu Bia Mining Limited

In June 2008, AMEC was awarded the engineering and procurement contract by PanAust Limited for the concentrator expansion at the Phu Kham copper-gold operations in Laos.

The project scope involved two stages - the first being project definition and conceptual engineering, and the second being detailed engineering and procurement.

The first stage focused on options to expand the existing concentrator from 12 Mt/a to 16 Mt/a and then to 24 Mt/a to increase the copper output to 100,000 t/a. The second stage of AMEC’s scope involved detailed design to achieve the 16 Mt/a throughput option.

Kansanshi Copper Project, Zambia First Quantum Minerals

AMEC carried out a DFS for this major copper-gold project in Zambia. The study initially examined a 12Mt/a treatment plant, employing heap leach, solvent extraction /electrowinning (SX/EW), a concentrator and roaster.

In 2002, an optimisation phase was undertaken. AMEC was subsequently awarded the EPCM contract for the development of the project, based on an 8 Mt/a copper concentrator and leach plant.

The Kansanshi copper project has emerged as a landmark greenfield copper project. AMEC was awarded the 2005 WA Engineering Excellence Award, International Projects and Exports, for the Kansanshi copper project in Zambia.

Andacollo Copper Project, Chile Teck

The Andacollo project required a new 55,000 tpd concentrator, to process extensive hypogene sulphide reserves not amenable to heap leaching/SX/EW. AMEC’s EPCM scope included primary and pebble crushing, SAG and ball milling, copper and gold flotation, concentrate filtration, tailings impoundment with 150m high walls, site ancillary facilities, and a warehouse and shiploading facilities in the port of Coquimbo.

Due to the low grade of the copper deposit, the new concentrator had to be a low-cost design, requiring creative approaches to EPCM. AMEC’s project involvement began at the early planning stages, with responsibility for initial testwork evaluation, feasibility-level design, basic engineering and EPCM services. EPCM was completed in 2009 and AMEC is currently delivering study work on the next expansion of this project.

Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Project, Mongolia Rio Tinto

Oyu Tolgoi is the world’s largest undeveloped copper-gold deposit and is located in Mongolia’s South Gobi Desert. With current in-house expertise in complex underground mine design, development, construction and project delivery, AMEC is helping to bring this underground expansion project to production. We are currently involved in the expansion of this open-pit mine by means of six separate projects that are critical parts in developing an 85,000 tpd underground mine, using block caving methods including the underground workshop, underground primary crusher, concentrator expansion, ventilation and the detailed integrated development and operating plan.

The Rocanville potash project, located in Saskatchewan, Canada, is a C$1.8 billion major expansion project that will enable the Rocanville facility to produce an additional 2Mt of potash per year. AMEC’s scope of work includes the EPCM of a new mill, as well as for the expansion of the site’s utilities, storage and loadout facilities.

Victor Diamond Project, Canada De Beers

The Victor diamond mine is the largest capital project ever to be developed in northern Ontario; it is also the province’s most remote and inaccessible mine. In 2002, AMEC began studies to determine the project’s viability, which was followed by engineering, procurement and logistics, construction management, project management and commissioning services to complete the open-pit mine, process plant, and associated facilities and infrastructure. AMEC also conducted the required environmental assessments, and negotiated more than 150 environmental approvals. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that First Nations in the Attawapiskat community would benefit from the development. AMEC handed over the plant to De Beers in January 2008 on budget, nine months ahead of schedule and with an outstanding safety record of 3.8 million consecutive hours without a lost-time injury.
