20 Tokyo Conference — Commissions

recording was cataloged. The authority records include preferred terms, non-preferred

terms, related terms, geographic and/or cultural qualifiers, and scope notes. At present there are over 3,000 terms in the thesaurus, but more work remains to be done.

While working on the thesaurus, the Archive staff came to new conclusions: 1) Ap

pendix A of Grove's Dictionary is less complete and less useful than they had hoped.

2) The Library of Congress Subject Headings are more useful than they had expected.

3) Developing a subject thesaurus is very time consuming, making it difficult to

produce bibliographic records at an acceptable rate. 4) Many of the terms they selected

are not known by graduate ethnomusicology students not specializing in that area of

the world. 5) The Ethnomusicology Archive needs to share its work with more ethno

musicologists and librarians in order to develop a correct and useful thesaurus.

Project Group for Authority Structure in Uniform Titles

This Project Group did not meet in Tokyo. The draft of the text designed to enhance the

Guidelines for Authority and References Entries is progressing well. We expect the

Group to complete its work in Oxford. After that meeting the text will be forwarded to

IFLA for consideration.

Project Group on ISBD (PM)
