Project Group on Classification and Indexing
The open session of the Project Group on Classification and Indexing began with a brief sum
mary of the Stockholm session which had been concerned with the revision of the RILMAbstracts
classification outline. This outline appears at the beginning of each publication and sets the overall
organization of the abstracts in RILM.
The Amsterdam session concentrated on possibilities for improving the RILM international
thesaurus or index. Apaper prepared by Marilyn Bliss (and read by Ann Schuursma) from the In
ternational RILM Abstracts office in New York City was the central point of discussion. The paper was titled "Indexing Policy at RILM - Present Perspectives and Future Prospects". Several main points emerged from the discussion:
1. It might prove helpful to look for genres and terms which transcend national boundaries and
which are currently missing from the index. This would include suggesting better ways of organ
izing information under the present headings (e. g. see and see also references). 2. It was decided that the generation of glossaries of important terms used in the art and folk
music of non-Western countries, especially those terms not found in the New Grove Glossary, would be constructive.
The Project Group will continue to examine the above points, particularly in relation to several
Far Eastern cultures, at the Tokyo conference in 1988.

Project Group on Authority Structure for Uniform Titles
The Group had one working meeting at which discussion took place of the first draft to enhance
the IFLA document: Guidelines for Authority and Reference Entries, by adding provision for
music uniform titles. The problems inherent in the differences between major cataloguing codes
in the construction of uniform titles, especially those of a generic nature, were examined. It was
agreed that the inclusion of examples representative of these various codes, plus the clear caveat
that these examples are illustrative, not prescriptive, and that users should follow the practice of
their national cataloguing agency, should cover this problem. In addition, various definitions were
expanded, or clarified. It was decided that provision for references to variant headings and uni
form titles should be included, even though, for example, AACR2, does not allow for a variant
form of a uniform title. All these suggestions, amendments, etc., will be incorporated into a se
cond draft, which will be sent to the members of the Project Group for further comments and sug
gestions. Discussion will continue in Tokyo next year. Mireille Geering has replaced Peter Hag mann as Secretary of the group.

Project Group on ISBD (PM)
The ISBD (PM) Project Group held two meetings during the Amsterdam congress. The group
completed the review of the draft of the new edition so that the entire document can be submitted
for worldwide review at the end of the summer of 1987.
