Dear Iowa County 4-H Community, First off, I want to thank you for welcoming me into your community as the Iowa County 4-H intern. I am really looking forward to learning and growing as an individual through this opportunity, and I cannot wait to meet everyone and to share in the joy of helping students experience the wonders of the world through education. As a recent graduate from UW-Platteville, I know that my successes as a double major in English and history can be somewhat attributed to my participation in 4-H as a member of the Blake’s Prairie Bombers’ 4-H Club in Grant Count. One of the highlights of my summers growing up was participating in the annual Blake’s Prairie Fair in Bloomington, WI, so it was only natural that one of the first history papers that I remember writing was about the early years of the fair. Writing this paper showed me how powerful education and human relationships are to building a community. My love for 4-H and writing, especially about history, has only strengthened since then. One of my favorite experiences as an undergraduate was traveling to the National Archives in College Park, MD to research an American deceptive task force, called the “ghost army,” that was active in the later years of World War II.

Looking over the summer schedule filled with opportunities to work with many youth and families, I couldn’t help but fondly remember raising crossbred Suffolk sheep, listening to my camera rewind after I filled a roll of film, and adding stitch upon stitch to my latest cross-stitch design — all three examples of the projects that I started through 4-H. I can remember how excited I was when my photo “Kendra and Lambert” was selected as one of the top ten at the 2005 Wisconsin State Fair and what it meant to me to be asked to help teach a craft session at the Grant County 4-H Cloverbud Day when I was in high school. In a way, this internship feels like coming home because I am returning to a program that helped to shape how I view the world. In addition to 4-H, I have also taken advantage of my other opportunities. In fall 2010, I studied abroad and lived in a palace in Dalkeith, Scotland, which is approximately six miles away from Edinburgh (thirty minutes driving time). Following my study abroad experience, I found my niche at UW-Platteville when I was hired by Writing and Tutoring Resources (WATR) as a writing tutor for the Writing Center, and later I served as an intern editor for Stylus: An Anthology of Freshman Writing, which is a collection of essays used in teaching English composition classes. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I was hired by WATR in a professional role where I help with the Peer-Assisted Learning Program, the Writing Center, and Stylus during the regular academic year. All of these opportunities have reinforced the importance of education to me, and I cannot wait to share my love of learning as the 4-H intern. As I work alongside Deb Ivey and other 4-H agents, my summer will be filled with traveling to the 4-H & Youth Conference, visiting 4-H camp, chaperoning trips, attending 4-H sponsored events, etc. and above everything else, I will be promoting the importance of knowledge and service. If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding the 4-H program, please don’t hesitate to stop by the office and see me. Feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me at 608-930-9850. Once again, I am super excited to be part of the Iowa County 4-H community! All the best, Brianna M. Jentz Summer 2013 4-H Extension Office Intern
