DEFINING CHILD LABOURChild labour is commonly defined as work done by children under the age of 18 which is considered to be damaging to their physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual development.

Child labour encompasses every non-school going child – irrespective of whether the child is engaged in wage or non-wage work; whether he or she is working for their family or for others; whether employed in hazardous or non-hazardous occupations; whether employed on a daily or on a contract basis or as a bonded labourer

CHILD LABOUR - FACTS

1 in 7 children around the world is a child labourer. That is 218 million children who are working insteadof going to school. They work in factories, in fields, they serve tea on streets, they sell toys at traffic signal, they mine, they dig and they serve in homes. They are trapped in poverty with little hope of escape. They have been denied their rights to a childhood and full-time, quality education.

22% of child labourers work in the service industry – retail, restaurants & hotels, transport, finance, business, community and social services

9% of child labourers work in industry – mining, quarrying, manufacturing, construction and public utilities

69% of child labourers work in agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing

WHY DO CHILD LABOUR STILL EXIST TODAY?

1) Poverty : Poverty is widely considered as the top reason why children work at inappropriate jobs for their ages. Children work because their parents are poor; they have to supplement the family income or provide unpaid labour.

2) The relatively low wages paid to children are often a reason why employers prefer them to adult workers. Some children work unpaid, particularly as domestic workers, Employers find children more obedient and easier to control.

WHY DO CHILD LABOUR STILL EXIST TODAY?

1) It exists because often times it is ‘invisible’.

2) It exists because consumers do not care enough about who makes the products they buy as long as they are cheap.

3) It exists because the right of children to full-time education is not respected.

4) It exists because the formal education systems in some countries are allowed to discriminate against the poor & vulnerable by making schools inaccessible and unaffordable.

Survey on child labour by D.A.V. International students

On 30th of July 2015 we went on a survey of child labour. During this we met many working children and their families. We asked them about their conditions and whether their children are going to school or not. Many of them said that they are not able to afford the fees of the school. We felt very bad for them and also we were able to know their worse condition. So, we decided to help them by giving jobs to parents of these children who were working for their families and also promised them to take their admission in government schools.
