Palm Island is an artificial island being constructed off Dubai. It will form a prestigious development of villas, apartments, retail and service facilities – all visible from outer space. The main formation for the island is marine sand, placed hydraulically by ‘Rainbow’ dredgers. Before buildings and infrastructure can be constructed the sand needs to be compacted to control settlements. Pennine’s ContributionPennine’s ContributionPennine’s ContributionPennine’s Contribution
Working with one of Dubai’s largest contractors – Al-Naboodah LLC – Pennine provided equipment and technical expertise to carry out ground improvement to some 350,000m2 in a 14 week period. In addition to assisting with design and trial compaction evaluation, Pennine provided assistance with training local staff in equipment use and maintenance.
The ten sets of vibro Equipment provided by Pennine included BD300 & BD400 vibroflots, HD225 power packs, Pennine/Landini jetting pumps and various other ancillary equipment. The flots were used to carry out deep compaction within the sand to a depth of 14m, to achieve a relative density of greater than 85%. Vibroflots were the only equipment on this vast project that were capable of compacting the sand to the developer’s stringent requirements.
