Project proposal – Tolworth wayfinding
Introduction
SHEDx: is a regeneration and community engagement programme, funded by the Mayor of
London’s ‘Good Growth’ Fund and supported by the Royal Borough of Kingston. Our focus is
supporting a sense of pride in Tolworth and our work to date has included; regreening planters
on Tolworth Broadway, creating the Farm of the Futures at Tolworth Main Allotments,
establishing a monthly food and craft market, encouraging and supporting start up businesses
and artists, organising community events and encouraging people to explore local green
spaces.
Wayfinding: one of the issues revealed through our community consultation and also identified in the Tolworth Area Plan is the very poor knowledge of the green open spaces to the south of the A3. The Tolworth Area Plan quick wins include:
● Section 3.2 – “Connections and linkages: deliver enhancements including footways, signage and lighting to allow better connection … “
● Section 3.3 – “New or enhanced entrances to green assets – providing more opportunities for people to encounter, participate and enjoy London’s natural environment.”
In addition, the TAP advocates
● Tolworth Court Farm Fields Local Nature Reserve and the MOL is part of a wider network of green spaces within South West London. The nature reserve should be further activated with public activity focussed around biodiversity.
● connect the severed access to allow for a continuous walking loop along the Hogsmill river, through the nature reserve and up into Tolworth.
● green walls to underpass façades ● heritage highlighting
This work also has a clear and direct fit with the Thames Landscape Strategy and All London Green Grid. The proposal We propose the creation of three ‘trails’ that allow people to move around the area in an easy and safe manner visiting places of interest or need. The three are; nature (initially to Court Farm fields but eventually linking to, Kingston permaculture reserve, The Hogsmill River Walk, King George fields, etc), heritage (e.g. Corinthian Casuals) and civic (e.g. food bank at St George’s Church, Community Motors CIC, Express CIC, Farm of the Futures, etc). We will initially focus our attention on the nature trail and are confident that this will be completed by mid December 2019 (subject to S106 funding being allocated in a timely manner). The designs for planters and the new ‘gateway’ to Court Farm fields have already been designed and we have an artist waiting to produce the underpass mural. A document giving a detailed presentation of the proposal is included at appendix A

Risks, dependencies and legacy We have consulted widely on this proposal. Detailed discussion has taken place with Marc Cooper (RBK Regeneration Officer), we ran a public consultation exercise at Tolworth Day in July and we have also discussed the matter with Citizen Zoo and St George’s church (who run the food bank). Our preferred contractor (1-2-1 Collective, a local start up design and manufacture company) is confident that the nature trail will be completed pre-Christmas. A local landscape start up, Janice Horslen Garden Design, will be specifying low maintenance/ hardy perennial planting.
Risk Mitigation
Failure to complete within stated timescale (construction)
Public consultation completed, stakeholders engaged, designs completed, preferred contractors engaged (subject to confirmation by RBK)
Failure to complete within stated timescale (finance)
Timely sign off and allocation of funds from RBK

Ongoing maintenance of collateral The raised beds and Court Farm gateways will be constructed from high quality materials with as much has possible sourced from recycling. Should be little (if any) short to medium term degradation.
Upkeep of planters As with the planters on The Broadway, we have undertakings from local businesses/community organisations to water and care for the plants
Future funding Another element of the SHEDx project is the creation of a Business Improvement District which, when set up, would provide an independent funding stream for civic projects. In addition, the Farm of the Futures is bidding for continued funding and Lidl have indicated that they would wish to support community projects once they relocate to their new site.
