Library Finds Reason to Celebrate Burke Centre Library throws party to mark first anniversary By Justin FanizziThe Connection Newspaper Wednesday, June 17, 2009 ‘One year ago, the Burke Centre Library had just opened its doors and was being celebrated for its innovative design and convenient location. Twelve months and thousands of visitors later, that optimism and enthusiasm has not waned, as library staff and supporters gathered with the community on Saturday, June 13, 2009, to celebrate a successful first year of service. The library celebrated its first anniversary with a used book sale, two author lectures and a silent auction, all of which attracted dozens of loyal library patrons. “It’s been wonderful,” said branch manager Linda Schlekau, of the library’s first year. “We’ve made lots of new community friends and partners and our circulation has gone through the roof as people have discovered us. There was a lot of excitement when we were brand new and that level of excitement hasn’t changed. People like to be here.” Board of Supervisors Recognizes the Herndon-Monroe Parking Garage Remediation Project Management Team May 18, 2009 The Board of Supervisors recognized the Herndon-Monroe Parking Garage Remediation Project Management Team for its efforts in conducting a structural assessment, the design, and the successful implementation of urgent repairs to the upper deck of the Herndon-Monroe Parking Garage. The repairs, though an unexpected expenditure, were completed in a short time and within budget. The removal of parking spaces in the garage impacted not only the commuters but the surrounding neighborhood. The team demonstrated and exceptional spirit of collaboration throughout the project and provided relief to the community by establishing temporary fields for parking as the facility is used daily by hundreds of commuters. Throughout the life of the project, the public was kept informed of the project activities via the Fairfax Connector Website and printed announcements and notices. Board of Supervisors Recognizes the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter Project Management Team November 17, 2008

The Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter Project Management Team was recognized for its efforts to incorporate green building features into the design of the shelter. The project management team includes the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and Wisnewski Blair & Associates. It is the first such shelter in the country to be recognized by the Green Building Initiative’s Green Globes environmental assessment and rating

system for commercial buildings and the first project to be certified by the Green Building Initiative in Virginia. Among the environmental features incorporated in the design of the facility are: a minimal footprint; energy-efficient appliances and systems; minimal environmental impact building materials; materials from nearby areas to reduce costs and environmental impact of hauling; natural landscaping; low-emissivity glass; preferred parking for carpoolers; and bicycle racks and an off-site trail.

Award winners are selected based on their advancement or support of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and Fairfax County’s environmental goals and policy statements; their dedication of personal time and expertise beyond normal fiscal or civic responsibilities; and their leadership as a role model for others.

The awards program is administered by the Fairfax County Environmental Quality Advisory Council.

Board of Supervisors Recognizes the McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center Project Management Team December 8, 2008 The Board of Supervisors recognized the McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center (MPSTOC) Project Management Team for demonstrating an exceptional spirit of collaboration for demonstrating an exceptional spirit of collaboration throughout the planning, design, and construction of the MPSTOC. The first of its kind in the nation, the facility is built to foster and alliance among the County of Fairfax and commonwealth of Virginia public safety, transportation and emergency management partners.

Board of Supervisors Recognizes the West Ox Bus Operations Center Project Management Team December 8, 2008 The Board of Supervisors recognized the Herndon-Monroe Parking Garage Remediation Project Management Team for demonstrating an exceptional spirit of collaboration throughout the planning, design, and construction of the Wet Ox Bus Operations Center. The facility provides enhanced transit services and operational efficiency for Fairfax County and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
