Improving the speed, reliability and customer experience on local bus routes
Goal: Implement cost-effective,common-sense improvements on high ridership local routes
Improvement Strategies:Stop Spacing: Up to 1/4 mile apart so buses spend more time moving and less time stopping
Shelters: Goal to place a shelter at all stops that meet boarding requirements
Transit Signal Priority: Install at select locations that provide the greatest benefit
Bus Stop Accessibility: Ensure all stops are ADA compliant; consider improvements to pedestrian network leading to bus stops

Better Bus Route Project Improvements
- Minor routing change to streamline service
- Removed or relocated 28 bus stops, with a net decrease of 19 bus stops
- Installed 8 new shelters and 5 new ADA pads
- Transit signal priority planned at 13 intersections
- Travel time savings invested in longer operator recoveries
Results
- Peak period, peak direction travel times improved by over 5 percent
- 88 percent of all boardings now at a sheltered stop
- All bus stops are ADA accessible
Lessons Learned
- Allow plenty of time for outreach
- Requires detailed coordination with the city on signage changes
- Don’t overlook other routes using same stops
