GeographyThe Atlas Mountains, which extend across much ofMorocco, northern Algeria and Tunisia, are part of the fold

mountain system which also runs through much of SouthernEurope. They recede to the south and east, becoming a steppelandscape before meeting the Sahara desert which coversmore than 90% of the region. The sediments of the Sahara overlie an ancient plateau of

crystalline rock, some of which is more than four billionyears old.A wide variety of valuable crops including cereals, rice andcotton, and woods such as cedar and cork, are grown.Typical Mediterranean crops such as olives, figs, dates and

citrus fruits also thrive in these areas. The Nile valley is particularly fertile, and most of Egypt'spopulation lives close to the river.

    Transport and Industry

The economies of Algeria and Libya were transformedby the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves in thedeserts.Morocco's major exports are phosphates andagricultural produce, and as in Egypt and Tunisia, thetourist industry is essential to the economy.

Egypt has the most varied industrial base, importingtechnology to develop electronics and engineeringindustries, and maintaining the reputation of its high-quality cotton textiles.Oil rigs are scattered throughout the deserts of Libya

and Algeria. Libyan oil is especially prized because ofits low sulphur content, which means it producesmuch less pollution than other fuel oils.

ExplorationAt the time of writing there are over 70 Oil

Companies with a direct interest in North Africa.2400 major hydrocarbon discoveries have beenmade in Africa as a whole, with a majority being inNorth Africa. 26% of Africa's Oil lies in the onshoreCratonic basins of Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, including 50 billion barrels Oil equivalent in the Sirtebasin, and 10.6 billion Oil equivalent barrels in theGhadames basin. It is estimated that in North Africaalone, there are more than 100 billion barrels of

remaining reserves (as of 2003) found in 16 basins.

Exploration began in the 1950s, with majoronshore discoveries in Libya (the Sirte basin) andAlgeria (the Tilrhemt uplift). The late 1950s saw a

string of large finds in the Libyan Sirte basin,

Although offshore exploration began also in the 1950s, it wasn'tuntil the late 1970s that work was moved below the 200mcontour. Several medium sized fields were drilled in the early1960s, notably in the Gulf of Suez, but it wasn't until offshorethe coast of Libya inthe Sirte basin. Exploration below 200m

only became fruitful in 1977, when the Pelagian basin, offshoreTunisia and Libya began to pay out. While the rate of new discoveries declined in the 1980s, thewidespread use of 3D seismic has once again encouraged arush of targets to be drilled with some success

Although 3D seismic reached North Africa only in 1983 (due tothe harsh Desert conditions) a new major push has beeninitiated in the region. Shell has just started a major project in2006 which will see much of the Sirte basin mappedaeromagnetically and surveyed with 3D seismic. By the time thework is complete in mid 2007, Shell will have acquired nearly

8000 km of 2D and 3300 square km of 3D seismic, as well as68,000 km of aeromagnetic data. Drilling is planned to start inthe second half of 2007. In the past year, BG, Exxon Mobil,Norsk Hydro, and Statoil (among others) have allannounced major investments in North African exploration, asthe true potential of the region is uncovered.

The 20102011 Tunisian revolution, or Dignity Revolution is a series of streetdemonstrations taking place throughout Tunisia since December 2010. Thedemonstrations and riots were reported to have started over unemployment, foodinflation, corruption, freedom of speechand poor living conditions. The protestsconstituted the most dramatic wave of social and political unrest in Tunisia in three

decades and have resulted in scores of deaths and injuries. The protests weresparked by a self-immolation ofMohamedBouazizi on December 17[and led to theousting ofPresidentZineElAbidineBen Ali 28 days later on 15 January 2011, whenhe officially resigned after fleeing to Saudi Arabia, ending 23 years in power.Theprotests inspired similar actions throughout the Arab world, most notably in Egypt,Yemen, andJordan. The Revolution has been compared to the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and

other revolutions in Eastern Europe in 1989 because it has created a domino effect ithe Arab bloc, much like the Czecho-Slovak revolution did in the Communist bloc.Following Ben Ali's departure, a caretaker coalition government was created, including members of Ben Ali's party, the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD), inkey ministries, while including other Opposition figures in other ministries, withelections to take place within 60 days. However, five newly-appointed non-RCDministers resigned almost immediately, and as of 21 January 2011 (2011 -01-21)

daily street protests in Tunis and other towns around Tunisia continue, demandingthat the new government have no RCD members and that the RCD itself bedisbanded .On 27 January Prime Minister MohamedGhannouchi reshuffled thegovernment, removing all former RCD members other than himself. In Tunisia and the wider Arab world the protests, and change in government, arecalled the "Sidi Bouzid revolt" (derived from SidiBouzid, the city where the initialprotests began).[In the media these events have been dubbed theJasmineRevolution in keeping with the geopolitical nomenclature of "colourrevolutions",although the comparison is disputed, notably by many Tunisians themselves.

    Q. :Contrary to the assumption of an increasingly

Islamophobic world, is religion the sole motivatingfactor for Islamic Nations?

    R. :No, religion is not the sole motivating factor anylonger. Economics is replacing fundamentalismbecause people belonging to such nations haverealized the fact the bellies cant be filled with aclosed mind. The protestors are demanding bettereconomic conditions, jobs, lower inflation and basicfundamental rights. We have had such examples

in the recent past in countries like- Jordan, Sudan,Tunisia and Egypt. The war is on corruption andsolution is the removal of Hosni Mubarak andushering in Democracy.

This would result in the disruption of crude supplies to the refineries andhigher prices of petroleum products. "Shipping costs would also shootup as fewer ships will be available because of the longer sailing time,"a

senior industry official said.India imports most of its crude from the adjoining Gulf countries that lieeast of the Suez Canal.According to petroleum ministry sources, India imported 104 milliontonnes of crude from the Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman,Kuwait and United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was followed by 33 milliontones of crude from Africa mainly from Nigeria, which also does notcome through the Suez Canal.Only 12.1 million tones of crude were imported from South America, mainly Venezuela, through the Suez Canal and these could bestaggered in case of trouble. However, while the movement of Indian oil imports will not be directlyaffected by any trouble on the Suez Canal, the country's exports toAmerica and Europe would be adversely impacted.

The lucrative Western markets account for as much as 35 per cent ofIndia's exports most of which move through the Suez Canal. As far as India's bilateral trade with Egypt is concerned there could besome adverse fallout but since this constitutes a very small fraction ofthe country's total trade it would not affect the overall numbers, acommerce ministry official said.
