ProjectsPrevious research (selection)• Hydrochemical, geochemical and marine-biologi-
cal investigations for the ecological infl uence of off-shore locations and habitat characterisation using theexample of the Limski-Channel for mediterranean sponges (Porifera), Sv. Marina, Istria, Croatia
• Geochemical investigations, gas volume fl ow and geo-thermal gradient and heat fl ow measurements on sub-marine, volcanic hydrothermal vents and fumaroles as well as chemical characterisation of the occuring min-eral precipitations of the hydrothermal system in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Panarea, Italy
• Research and documentation of underwater freshwater inlets into the Dead Sea, Israel
• Research and documentation of a coral reef under ex-treme environmental conditions at the mouth of riversEuphrates and Tigris, Iraq
• Documentation of the renaturation of acid mining-related lakes with the support of innovative treatments

Leader Scientifi c Diving:Prof. Tobias FiebackProf. Broder Merkel
Instructor:Dr. Thomas Pohl (Confi rmedScientifi c Diving Instructor)
Scientifi c DivingApproximately 71 percent of our planet are covered by oceans and thus deprived of a direct exploration. This means that we know the surface of the moon or Mars better than the sea fl oor of our planet. The deep sea can only be explored with the help of underwater vehicles, but the fl at areas of the oceans – to a depth of about 40 meters – can be examined by diving scientists. Scientifi c diving involves the use of purposeful work meth-ods in different topics and application areas under water.
Working groups• Geology• Gas and water chemistry• Microbiology/biomineralisation• Heat and material transport• Photo and video documentation
Methods• Direct and indirect observation• Mapping of the investigation areas• Taking of gas, water & rock samples
as well as (micro)biota• Measuring i.a. of temperature, pH, volume fl ow rate• Documentation: digital (photo/video)
analogue (writing board)
Fields of application• Earth sciences• Natural sciences• Environmental sciences• Engineering sciences• Economics
All of these qualifi cations are crucial advantages over unmanned systems for the exploration of shallow marinesystems. The certifi cate of a Scientifi c Diver displays the graduate as an educated scientifi c diver all over the world.
Social skills• Self-confi dence• Sense of responsibility• Teamspirit
