Apresentação da escola participante em Portugal -Centro Escolar de Assentis e ChancelariaTRANSCRIPT
In the 80s of the last century pre-school education started to become
relevant in Portugal, supported by new legislation and facilities created by
the Ministery of Education.
Later, in the 90s, pre-school was recognized as the first step of school life
(step 0). Nevertheless it still remains non compulsory to the present day.
Pre-school education in Portugal is ministrated in public schools,
cooperative schools (private owned but partially supported by the state)
and private schools.

The immediate goal of the Ministery of Education is to achieve a coverage rate of 80%.
In public schools, pre-school education comprehends two components:
one educational, which is the responsibility of the Ministery of the Education, with
a daily length of five hours and another of family support which is the
responsibility of the municipalities, with a daily length that may vary from school
to school (according to the family needs).
The educational component is ministrated by pre-school teachers with
a contractual link with the Ministery of Education. The family support component
is ashured by school staff (monitors or school servants), with contractual links with
the municipalities and under the coordination of pre-school teachers.
The educational component is free; the family support component is
paid according to criteria set by the municipalities.
The school year starts in September and ends in July. Throughout the
school year there are three major breaks: Christmas, Carnival and Easter.
The Christmas holidays, in December, cannot exceed five working days;
the Carnival holidays are usually in February and last for 3 days; the Easter
holidays might occur in March or April and cannot exceed five working days
All the schools are opened five days a week, from Monday to Friday,
except on bank holidays
