I. Pronouns

1. A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns.

2. The most frequently used pronouns are called personal pronouns. They refer to people or things.

Singular and Plural

Replace a singular noun with a singular pronoun

• I• Me• You• He• She • Him• Her• It

Replace a plural noun with a plural pronoun.

Subject Pronouns

3. A subject pronoun is used as the subject of a sentence.

Examples: She is my best friend.It is my dog.Does he know the answer?You and I will meet later.

4. An object pronoun is used as the direct/indirect object or the object of a preposition.

Examples: (copy two)

Give the book to me.The teacher gave her a reprimand.I will tell you a story.Susan read it to them.

Possessive Pronouns5. A possessive pronoun is

apronoun that shows who orwhat has something. Apossessive pronoun may

takethe place of a possessivenoun.

Possessive Pronouns6. Possessive pronouns have two forms. One form isused before a noun. The other form is used alone.

Possessive Pronouns7. Possessive pronouns are not written with

apostrophes. The pronoun its, for example,

shows possession. The word it’s, on the other

hand, is a contraction of it is. Read thefollowing sentences. Notice the meaning of thewords in red type.

Its central character is Winnie Foster. (possessive pronoun)

It’s about the adventures of Winnie Foster. (contraction of It is)

8. Reflexive pronouns - are personal pronouns that have "-self" or "-selves" added to the end.

• Ex.• Bob finished the homework himself.

9. Indefinite pronouns - are pronouns that do not refer to a specific person or thing.

10. An interrogative pronoun is used to ask questions.

• Who, Whom, Which, What

• You will find who, whom, and are used to refer to people, and which and what are used to refer to things and to animals.
